  1. thanks for the advice but i probably won't use. If you are looking to "pretty up" some posts you may want to help the young man who quoted me a couple posts back & then said I was bashing sammy. I never said anything about sammy.
  2. no i don't & no offense but posting on message boards is not my fulltime job. sentence structure, including quotes, hard core stats & keeping track of every poster's prior posts to the nth degree are not things I'm real interested in. Again, this is a message board...not a board room. Brian Roberts for Gallagher is highway robbery. The Chicago Cubs want & need to win now....not in 3 yrs. Why we are not willing to give up nearly any combination of two highly touted minor leaguer's (including Gallagher at whatever level he's pitched) is beyond me. Brian Roberts is a strong upgrade at both 2B & at the leadoff spot in the Cubs order...whether Soriano's leg is healthy or not. The stats prove it and common sense proves it as well.
  3. what "facts" would those be? the one where Roberts gets on base 40 points better or the one where Soriano's quad injury that plagued him all of last year is carrying into this year which has alarmed lou piniella to which he stated that if one of the proposed deals gets done that Soriano would move down in the order?
  4. Brian Roberts, the 4th best 2B in the major leagues is not worth a pitcher that has never pitched past the AA minor league level. OK...
  5. thanks for the update Bruce. I've read that the o's are watching the cubs lower level minor leagues to put some players together w/ Gallagher that would not affect their 40-man. Do you know if there is any truth to that? Also, if Soriano's legs do not come around, don't you think JH will be more likely to cave in to MacPhail's demands? Also, I've heard JH is looking at two trades specifically. Assuming one is still the Robert's deal, what do you think the other one is? The Byrd trade or would it possibly be a starting pitcher upgrade like a Rich Harden or Blanton move?
  6. you are really grasping at straws if you continue to believe they want roberts just for a "minor 2b upgrade". they want him to leadoff. I now hope the trade goes through so you can see for yourself so that this struggle back & forth can finally come to an end & we all cheer for roberts to lead off w/ a walk, roberts to steal, fuko to single him in & then soriano to hit a two run homer & 3-0 cubs. That makes the dempster, marquis starts much more palatable.
  7. you don't have to believe me that I have a source. It might not be all that good although I'm not seeing anyone else w/ good sources either including the beat writers. this is a message board & I simply passed on a nugget that i heard....fwiw. I never said it was going to happen...only that it was something being discussed/considered. the shot at me regarding sources was uncalled for. I really don't understand all of the agnst on here. Aren't we all cub fans? Aren't we all rooting for the betterment of the team? We all have opinions & that is what a message board is all about. I welcome anyone to provide any info they get as well. It's something to talk about.
  8. that was certainly not my intent. We'll see how it plays out. It was just interesting getting his comments on some of these matters after all of the speculation in the offseason. Mark me down as rooting for the Roberts/Burnett combo as the daily double. I've also heard from one of my sources that there have been some discussions w/ the A's regarding Rich Harden. He is a risk for obvious reasons, but wow...what a buy low candidate w/ a stretch upside. That would make up for any Prior loss is he finally returns to form.
  9. lou also said he didn't think the deals would get done though.
  10. for those thinking that soriano would still lead off if we get roberts...lou was on the score this morning & said hendry is working on two deals. If one of them goes through...soriano would not be leading off...right from the horses mouth. also, he said howry is the closer, dempster is "on a mission", fuko will bat third w/ Theriot second unless this trade is made in which both theriot & soriano would move down.
  11. so soriano has more of a chance of hitting a leadoff home run than for roberts to lead off w/ a walk or hit & then proceeds to get hit in? OK...gotcha. And soriano's legs are an issue at the top. Last time I checked, you have to run to first after you hit the ball. His lower body issues are a major issue but more critical at the top where he's asked to get on base to be driven in vs drive someone in ahead of him. Some of you are so unobjective & stubborn it's unflattering. And I'm giving my opinion so it's not wrong. Opinions aren't wrong. They are a personal belief. The intolerance of other's opinions here is very disappointing. The rubbing it in other's face nonsense us also unappealing.
  12. for all of you soriano leading off lovers out there...he reported to camp w/ lingering leg issues despite having all of the offseason to recover. That's all we need is another year of his leg issues to deal w/ at the top of the order. The days of him being a serious & continuous threat on the basepaths are in the past. This puts even more pressure on Hendry to get fresh legs at the top.
  13. unless this is a precursor to a bigger move then this makes no sense. Cintron is an atrocious player. His obp is under .300, he never walks & is just not good.
  14. "Do you have the PbP data to back up how often your hypothetical scenario happens or are you just pulling it out your ass and hoping we'll accept it as fact?" Here's your fact & the one that really matters...sori's obp was 40 pts less than roberts last year. 377 vs 337. fact #2: soriano's slugging was .560 vs .432 showing that the extra base hitter would be in position to hit the guy in that gets on base more often. Soriano had a career low 19 steals last year so it's not like he is going to beat out as many ground balls or successfully steal as much as roberts who stole 50 bases a year ago in the american league that is not as much of a base stealing league as the nl. Finally...you need a patient hitter in the leadoff position. Soriano struck out 22% of at bats fanning a whopping 130 times in the leadoff position. Roberts whiffed 31 less times while walking 89 times to the oh-so-patient Soriano's 31. Soriano & his telephone pole haven't seen too many pitches they didn't like...ala Shawon Dunston circa 1988.
  15. they have no relevance because we don't know what our record would have been w/ roberts hitting in front of soriano last year. i hope we get to find out this year.
  16. fred..i agree soriano should lead off on the current cub team so your records have no relevance. i'd like to see what it would be if we had roberts in front of soriano like we will if this trade goes through.
  17. "Breaking ball in the dirt (strike 1 swinging) Fastball 2 feet over his head (strike 2 swinging) Breaking ball in the dirt (strike 3 swinging)" this sounds like how we start most games when you consider soriano strikes out about 30% of the time. It's always great for the chicago cubs to start games w/ an out isn't it? Just because our $18 mill man "feels better" & doesn't have pressure to earn his money & come in...in the clutch. Give me a break. There was a time when his lack of patience & knowledge of the strikezone was outweighed by his speed on the basepaths. Those days are gone & he is more of an rbi producer just like roberts is more of a tablesetter.
  18. you would be right if we were the Chicago Soriano's. It's not what is best for Soriano...but for the Cubs. Soriano needs to do what is best for the team. In regards to him hitting best there. How do you know? He has never hit 2nd, 4th, 5th for the cubs. He did at times for other teams but that doesn't mean he would bust out here. Soriano is more likely to get an extra base hit than roberts so he would knock him in. If soriano got on base, roberts may single or walk so that doesn't get soriano in...especially when you consider soriano is not a heavy basestealer these days. "SORIANO IS MOST VALUABLE WHERE HE HITS THE BEST I find it amazing that you jokers continue to spoew this garbage about how "Soriano is more valuable lower in the order" yet you continue to ignore that fact that all the evidence shows otherwise."
  19. in over my head? in what respect? none of us works in mlb or in any position other than fandom to make anything other than a fan's opinion. to the guy saying a homer by soriano is better than roberts simply getting on base. How simplistic. I've already answered this one but i'll take another run at driving it into your head. First off, roberts gets on base more times than soriano hits home runs so. In terms of getting on base in general, roberts gets on base 40 pts more than soriano plus soriano is more likely to drive roberts in than vice versa. It doesn't get much more simple than that. In terms of soriano not hitting as good down in the order vs the top. You may be able to say that about a lot of hitters for various reasons. That is hardly a primary reason for where you hit someone as each team & year brings a different set of variables to the table. Soriano has said in the offseason he would move down if that's what piniella wanted. So much for him being against the move. If more people that are vocal on here are saying soriano is better leading off...that doesn't make your side right. You give yourself way too much credit as a message boarder that ranks right up there w/ the guy ringing the salvation army bell at wal-mart during the holidays.
  20. this is a message board & last time I checked, next to talking in a bar or during a poker game w/ your buddies...that is the equivalent for message board speculation posting. We aren't here to solve nuclear energy or splitting of the atom...but to discuss cubs baseball & the many varied opinions that in the grand scheme of things have no more importance than a good game of tiddly winks.
  21. i have no idea where tiger got his facts, but again...roberts had an obp of 40 pts better. that makes it pretty clear doesn't it? Not only does roberts get on base better but he works the count further, steals more bases when he gets on & is less likely to drive people in like soriano is as well so soriano hitting behind him is better. I think soriano hitting second might actually be better as he is a gaps hitter & would see fastballs w/ lee behind him & roberts on base in front of him. put fuko 4th & aram 5th & we should score our share of first inning runs. Those runs will be needed w/ our 4th & 5th pitcher as we'll have to outscore in those contests.
  22. you act like soriano has 60 lead off home runs/yr. Unless he has more than roberts would have hits plus walks then your analogy does not make sense. soriano also gets thrown out a lot so "net steals" is the more relevant stat. So you say soriano "feels more comfortable" hitting leadoff. How do you know? He also said he'd move down if that was best for the team so I guess his "feelings" have changed. If he crumbles unless he leads off then we have other issues because this is about what is best for the team...not one player. There is a reason why he was shipped out of NY & then out of texas. I'm also curious as to what other move has been rumored. Hopefully, it was for one...AJ Burnett...the healthy version. That my friends, is the second critical move needed to increase playoff success. I also think a division win is no sure thing either. Gallardo concerns me in year 2 & if sheets/gagne prove healthy...we will have a battle on our hands.
  23. no thanks. soriano in front of roberts makes no sense.
  24. the odds on soriano getting a leadoff hr are far less than the odds on roberts getting on base to be driven in are. soriano had had leg issues for the past several yrs. He has progressively gotten worse. He used to be more effective as a leadoff hitter. He is now more of a run producer. Soriano would not bat 6th & I don't even think theriot would bat 2nd. In fact, I would play derosa at ss & hit him 2nd. I absolutely love our lineup w/ roberts leading off followed by derosa, soriano, fuko, lee & ramirez. I also think soto wil be an above avg hitter at catcher. if roberts has a 40-pt advantage over soriano then yes...i would prefer roberts getting more at bats. why wouldn't you? since soriano tends to hit more extra base hits & roberts gets on base more often, it only makes sense to hit soriano behind roberts. Actually, fuko has a great reputation as an on base guy that makes the pitcher work. I think fuko would be a great 2-hole hitter behind roberts & then we'd be very strong behind them throughout the lineup. Our 3-hole hitter should see very good pitches & soriano has proven to be a great threat when he knows a fastball is coming. I like the sound of starting a game up 2-0 or 3-0 in lieu of 1-0.
