  1. yeah...him & I & all of major league baseball through the years. I wonder who is right between them & a handful of message board posters. Tough call.
  2. and for the guy that says leadoff isn't a postion over & over. Neither is closer but every team has one...just like a leadoff hitter. By your analogy, we could use marquis to close, rich hill, or lieber. That is wrong. Each team designates a closer just like they do a leadoff hitter. In fact, you'll hear some gm's saying they are looking for "a #2 hitter" or a "#4 hitter". soriano hits for extra base hits. roberts is a singles hitter. it only makes sense to hit soriano behind him as a result. You see every team in the major leagues do it this way & have for years. They even follow this to a degree in the all star game. the only reason soriano led off last year is because we had no legit alternative & he preferred to lead off. He has now come off of that preference by saying he would move down if that is what the team needed & it does.
  3. the difference is...i haven't resorted to sophomoric personal attacks & I don't pull phrases out to pick apart. I am stating my opinion just like many on this board have. I have not posted my opinion (with or without observations or stats) any more than anyone else. It's just that those complaining about my opinion have a different one so it's convenient to pick apart mine. Again, regardless or soriano's obp last year...it was 40 pts less than Roberts'. Roberts is not an rbi-producing hitter like soriano so he is better suited to hit in front of him & would if we are fortunate enough to get him. I still find it comical that piniella who has won a world series & coached baseball his entire life, hendry who has been in baseball his whole life as a mgr or gm & has been in the playoffs twice recently, stone, etc....are discredited so much & put on the same par w/ people posting on a message board. That is probably the biggest stretch i've seen thus far.
  4. i could care less about his career obp. i care about what it has been recently..& recently...it has been 40 pts worse. His legs are not what they were. Look at his net steals rate. look at his injury track record the last few yrs. He has grown out of the leadoff spot & down in the order.
  5. there is such a thing as a leadoff hitter as i see him lead off each & every game & after innings where the pitcher makes the last out. they are the catalyst...one who is asked to work counts, get on base, & score the go ahead run. teams that score first tend to win more than they lose. having an extra guy on base in at least the first inning followed by an extra power bat hitting behind him is a huge boost to the offense & makes the pitcher labor more in the first inning.
  6. he had the second highest ops of his career? so...what's your point? he also had an obp 40 pts less than roberts & his steals have dropped from 40 some to less than 20 vs roberts' 50. plus...he is a more valuable as an rbi-producer & we happen to be one short in this lineup. So you don't think Dave Kaplan, Mike Murphy, Steve Stone, Len Kasper, Paul Sullivan, etc....talk to Jim Hendry, Lou Piniella? You think ironically, they just pull this out of their arse? Wow.
  7. bigbad..you would be disappointed then. It has been discussed adnauseum on the score, wgn & in the chicago print media that the cubs brass put soriano at leadoff last yr as that was his preference. that didn't work out too well & they are looking to upgrade that spot in the lineup while beefing up the middle by moving him down. soriano has agreed to move down this year if we get a good leadoff hitter. that is not opinion, but fact as reported on numerous occasions on tv, radio & in print. If I need to back up my opinions on a message board w/ systematic analysis then i'll let you guys do that. I work for a living, have two active children & am simply a lifelong cubs fan like many of you probably are. Happy trails...
  8. no i don't....and certainly not anymore than you guys that are soriano leadoff lovers or derosa lovers. i see the same opinions over & over & over on that as well so...touche.
  9. dexter...you just made a personal attack & that is wrong. also, the comments about your head hurting when I post. that's ridiculous. you must be taking this too seriously then. I don't back up my opinions w/ a ton of stats because quite frankly...i don't have time & I don't care all that much. I'm not a professional message board poster & don't feel message boards are rocket science. they are for opinions & if they are not frought w/ analytical analysis...then so be it. I didn't realize it was a prereq & if it is...then i'm on the wrong board.
  10. I am too, but I'm ok w/ overpaying as it's not like we are protecting a highly rated farm system. I don't view anyone in our minors as untouchable when you consider the window of opportunity that is here.
  11. that's where you are wrong. I have not posted anywhere close to others that post against the trade.
  12. i was responding to someone that was rehashing the other side. I think we are all just anxious to see something happen...anything. It will be refreshing for the games to start in a couple weeks to get our mind off of it & back onto the field.
  13. so only the ones who are against the trade are allowed to post on it?
  14. we do "need" roberts because we don't have an effective leadoff hitter. There is a reason why piniella/hendry have been pursuing roberts for so long & you've heard interest in figgins. Soriano does not have the legs he used to have & is a better middle of the order guy these days. Roberts & Fukodome fully understand a "good atbat". They work the count & get on base. This helps the entire lineup as people are on to hit in & they make the pitcher work. The entire offense is much better w/ fuko/roberts w/ derosa as the supersub. I hope this gets done before the season starts. I think mcfails familiarity w/ all things cub hurt us here. He doesn't want to be perceived as getting the short end of the deal. They have no need for Roberts though as they are not in position to compete for several years.
  15. it has been said numerous times. Hendry is not trying to upgrade 2B as much as upgrade at leadoff. Soriano's legs are not what they used to be. He got on base 40 pts less than brob last year & stole far fewer bases. in an effort to save his legs, he wants to move him down in the order so he can be more in a driving in runs position than as a table setter. the addition of brob & fuko balance out a lineup by giving it much higher obp, better baserunners & the rbi producers in a better position to do just that. when you consider the rocks & indians are the only teams w/ glaring holes at 2B, I agree that it appears hendry is bidding against himself. I'd give andy a final offer & then move on to addressing starting pitching, SS, CF. There is no legit reason for mcfailure to hang onto brob other than to drive up the market. The o's blow & will for some time. Keeping a 30-yr old leadoff hitter that has admitted to roids....that will be a FA in 2 yrs...makes zero sense.
  16. that is flawed thinking. your theory relies on soriano having as many leadoff hr's as roberts would of simply getting on base. Roberts gets on base 40 pts better than soriano plus sori would be able to hit him in. roberts is so much better a 2B than derosa overall it's not even close.
  17. there have been numerous articles written in the chicago papers & it's been on chicago radio numerous times that the cubs prefer to move soriano down in the order as he has leg issues & that he is not ideal leading off because he does not get on base at a high clip & he does not work the count. Contrast that with the effort put into getting Roberts who is a leadoff hitter & that is a pretty good deduction. I'd like to see someone promote the stat of how many first inning leads hold up & turn into a win. I'd much rather have Roberts get on via a walk or single, steal second & then come home on a Lee double, Sori single or aram homer in the first than to start the game w/ a 3 or 4 pitch strikeout to Soriano.
  18. all i have ever done is simply state my opinion...same as you. the difference is that you are not accepting of mine. You state the same things over & over again but that's ok...when i do it...it's redundant. Tim..I apologize for the earlier comment. I just get tired of defending my opinion when that is what a message board is all about.
  19. I've never said I was a big Theriot fan. Actually, i'm not a big fan of Soriano...especially leading off. There are reports that the quad injury he had last year is still bothering him so that gives further credence to the reports that they want him out of the leadoff spot. Roberts had 50 steals last year & gets on base at a clip of at least 80 pts more than Soriano. To most, it is a no brainer.
  20. Rob, you are either very young or young & anal. You'll eventually grow out of it. Good luck.
  21. leadoff hitter is not a position but neither is closer...what's your point? Rob...that is your opinion & I've given mine. We'll see who ends up being right.
  22. I put the priority on: 1) leadoff hitter 2) top 3 pitcher 3) closer 4) upgrade at SS 5) upgrade at CF
  23. what part of starting the game w/ an out makes your team better?
  24. the only reason the cubs want roberts is to get soriano out of the leadoff spot. those spouting roberts would bat second to soriano are wrong.
  25. the only reason lou/hendry want roberts is because he solves the leadoff issue. He gets on base at about a .380 clip & stole 50 bases last year. Period. They desparately want Soriano out of the leadoff slot. Plain & simple. They view it as critical for the overall success of the offense as anything & I agree w/ them. I'm all for Roberts at the top followed by Fukodome & then Lee, Aram & Soriano. Greene would be another great addition w/ his penchance for power at a low power position. The moves I would make in this order are: Roberts, Nathan & Greene. We clearly missed the boat on Haren as he could have been had cheaply. I'm not a big Burnett fan for health/salary reasons and am not sold on Blanton yet as a top 3 guy.
