  1. The Cubs certainly have the potential to avoid being a last-place, 90-loss team for the next few seasons. I wouldn't bet on it, though.
  2. Whoever wrote that cubs.com article is lying. There's no way the kid hit any balls into the seats while wearing a pair of Cliff Floyd's shoes.
  3. As far as Vitters versus Wieters is concerned, when the players are ranked closely, I would almost always take the college guy over the high school guy. Also, I would almost always take the left handed hitter (or switch hitter) over the right handed hitter. Also, I would almost always take the guy who plays the more valuable defensive position. The one thing that I would like to ask a veteran, accomplished scout is how a hitter's height plays into his evaluation, if at all. Wieters is tall. In my amateur opinion, being tall, while certainly not a death knell, works against a hitter. Long arms, large strike zone, etc. For that reason, I worry a little bit about him as a major league hitter. Just a little bit.
  4. I don't want them to do this because if the catching situation consists of a veteran and Soto, you know who's going to get most of the playing time (see Cliff Floyd vs Matt Murton). So you'll have Soto play 40 games while some has-been gets most of the action. This is always a dilemma. If you plan for Soto (Murton) and Kendall (Floyd), we fear that Kendall (Floyd) will get the majority of the time. If you plan for Soto (Murton) and Koyie Hill (Buck Coats), what happens if Soto (Murton) stinks or gets hurt? Koyie Hill (Buck Coats) is your every day catcher (right fielder). I think it's wise to accumulate the most talent possible and rely on your manager to manage it wisely. If your manager can't or won't do that, get a new manager.
  5. Soto is probably going to strike out at an alarming rate in the major leagues, especially at first. He's also likely to get his share of extra base hits and throw out some would-be basestealers. The Cubs should plan on having him share time with some veteran catcher next season. Of course, I expect them to have two veteran catchers next season and trade Soto for virtually nothing.
  6. I'm one of the biggest Floyd detractors on the board, (Floyd sucks. is my rallying call in flashchat) but releasing Floyd would be poor roster management. Survive with one backup IF for the next 2 weeks then recall Ronny on 9/1. Floyd's still a better hitter than Ronny off the bench. That and Craig Monroe has been worse than Neifi against righties. That's a good point about hanging onto Floyd. Monroe might hit a few HR down the stretch, though, especially against LHP. Depending on what our major league scouts say, he may be worth a try.
  7. It doesn't average $18 per.
  8. Soriano doesn't make that much.
  9. At worst, we can make him our everyday RF. .240/.310/.550
  10. Lot easier to drop a few LBS. than changing an entire appearance, so who's the fat girl and who's the ugly one? Marquis is uglier than Eyre and Eyre is fatter than Marquis. The question answers itself.
  11. All class. Oh get off your high horse. I made no comment about his dad other than hoping he'd get better. I'm not going to question the intent of your post (only you know that), but it came out very bad. It was very obvious that he wasn't going to get better; in fact, he was undoubtedly already dead when you made your post (Laura's post mentioning the announcement of his death came less than 10 minutes after your post, and it certainly takes more than 10 minutes before a death is announced publicly). Your post came off as a potshot at Cliff during a time of personal tragedy. It's certainly valid to complain about his loss of power, but this thread isn't the proper place for that. It's a potshot at Cliff's power, not Cliff. I honestly didn't know his Dad was in that much trouble, and I didn't think the comment was that offensive. But now that I realize some people found the post offensive, I will say that I am sorry I posted it. I don't hang around trying to find ways to offend people, despite how that post may have looked. Very nice post, Soul.
  12. Right now, the Cardinals should be considered the favorite to win the division.
  13. This falls loosely into the category of not taking a made field goal off the board in football just for a chance of scoring a touchdown. Or, if you prefer, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
  14. In other words, one season's worth of Jay Payton. If the Cubs didn't exist, the Orioles would be the worst franchise in MLB.
  15. "Obviously, we like Jose a lot. He's a quality, quality guy.", said Hendry, speaking via teleconference. "We hate to give up three talented players like Gallagher, Soto, and Colvin, but you have to give something to get something. In this market, the price of poker is high. Obviously, we wish the youngsters well. I believe Kenny is happy with his half of the deal." "We're excited to have Contreras under contract for a couple more seasons.", Hendry added. "And, what with recently having gotten Kendall and Floyd extended, we felt we owed it to Soto and Colvin to send them somewhere they'd be able to play sooner rather than later."
  16. Don't be ridiculous.
  17. If Blanco is already on the 60-day DL, the 40-man roster stands at 39. No move would be required.
  18. Can either Towers or Trachsel hit the ball out of the ballpark?
  19. It has very little talent. Thanks, Jim!
  20. Dear Mr. Hendry: Please quit your job. Thank you. Jeff
