  1. The spring training roster stands at 37.
  2. Optioned pitcher Jose Ascanio and outfielders Jake Fox and Sam Fuld to Iowa; assigned pitcher Jason Waddell and infielder Bobby Scales to minor league camp. It also seems as though the Cubs have managed to get Richie Robnett through waivers and outrighted him to AAA Iowa.
  3. I wouldn't be surprised if Harden starts the year on the DL, allowing us to carry an eight-man bullpen including Vizcaino, Gaudin, Guzman, and Patton. Of course, that will only delay the decision.
  4. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090317&content_id=4005280&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  5. Jake Fox's chances of breaking camp with the major league team are only slightly greater than mine are.
  6. Keep one of the NRI 3B backups AND Hoffpauir. Go with 11 pitchers most of the time. Release Vizcaino. Marmol, Gregg, Heilman, Gaudin, Guzman, and Cotts in the bullpen. Work out a trade which allows you to option Patton. When you need a 12th pitcher, run the Iowa shuttle and bounce back and forth between 12th pitcher (Patton, Ascanio, Wells, Stevens, Hart, etc.) and 7th bench guy (Hoffpauir, Fox, Deeds, etc.).
  7. It certainly seems as though the Cubs are going to keep one of Koskie, Rivas, or German, especially now that Miles is hurting.
  8. That's what I'd prefer. A slight variation on that would be to work out a trade so we could option Patton, then add Waddell as the last reliever.
  9. Why would you say that? Hill started with most of the other starters on Wednesday night. Randy Bush seemed to give them an equal chance in his interview on Thursday. I would assume they would be leaning towards Bako but I haven't seen anything from the club about that yet. this is a battle that i'm totally interested about. Who's hotter: Rosanne or Rosie O'Donnel? Roseanne. It's not even close.
  10. If it weren't for the horrible, horrible Tim Wilken, we could have the #1 and #6 prospects in MLB.
  11. Who are these many middle infielders of whom you speak?
  12. I don't believe for one second that the Cubs will head north with only one backup infielder.
  13. I expect that Kosuke will be relegated to the 5th OF role before the end of May.
  14. Try to sign some 3B backup (Aurilia, Mientkiewicz) for as little money as possible and sit on the rest for a midseason addition.
  15. All I know is that the cubs had him working on core training, something that was non-existant in his workout when he played in japan/last year. That's about all I've heard. This is fantastic news. It will allow him to spin, helicopter-style, ever more vigorously this coming season.
  16. Cal and Craig - This month's VineLine says that Wells had a stress fracture. It doesn't say where.
  17. Guzman was granted another medical exemption and has an option remaining. I know I've seen that here by the most reputable posters, you, Navin, etc, but its disheartening that even cubs.com disagrees. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081214&content_id=3717139&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc&partnerId=rss_chc It is Muskat, but still...I haven't been able to find any links confirming Guzman was granted an extra option year. Arizona Phil, who is almost always on top of stuff like this, lists Guzman as being out of options. http://thecubreporter.com/cubs-40-man-roster
  18. I imagine that Hill's value is so low that Hendry might just choose his trade partner based on where Rich says he'd like to go.
  19. Hendry is awful. He's always been one of the worst GMs around, but now he's aiming to be one of the worst in baseball history.
  20. He's going to be way too expensive for us. Wiggington will be too expensive and will go some place where he has a better chance of playing time. He certainly would look good on our bench though. Wiggington got non tendered by the Astros because they had no money to pay out this off season so it isn't as though he is out there looking for or expecting a big payday. He is probably waiting to see where Hudson signs and how much he gets before he does anything. It's possible money won't be as much of an issue now that the ownership issue has been settled. If I were Wiggington, I'd like my chances of being able to win the starting 2nd base job out of ST if my competition was Fontenot and Miles. If you're willing to live with Ty Wigginton's defense at second base, you might as well move Soriano back to second and sign Adam Dunn to play LF. Wigginton would be a below-Kent-level defender at 2B.
  21. And this would accomplish... a right-handed hitter that could come off the bench and hit the ball out of the infield. a 3b/1b backup, which the cubs feel they need. so a couple things, i guess. Can he still play the OF adequately enough to spell Soriano/Bradley if we needed him to? Yes. If there were enough money for him, though, we would have kept DeRosa.
