  1. If Cedeno goes to Seattle for Heilman, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wuertz go with him.
  2. Whoever we get really needs to be able to play 3B in a meaningful fashion. That eliminates Millar. Is Hinske even a legitimate option at third any longer?
  3. Jeff, my memory is fading fast. But for some reason I'm thinking I thought (perhaps without merit) that Wells ended up September on the DL. Did I make that up? Craig, quit making things up, willya? He may have had some arm issues late in the season, but I don't remember that. He was never put on the major league DL last season, but there's no incentive for a team to do that anyway, what with no roster limitation after September 1st.
  4. I don't expect any great impact, but I believe Randy Wells will take a meaningful step forward this season.
  5. Who is the little guy with the black shirt and extremely fruity goatee? He's laughing with Z in the third photo and smiling with Reed Johnson and Tony Soprano in the sixth photo. I think he's also the guy with his back to the camera in the photo in which Ryan Dempster is reaching for his gun.
  6. I feel like that sentence is missing something. Coherent thought?
  7. Maybe he can teach Kosuke how not to spin like a freakin' top.
  8. Deeg, are you crazy? Don't you know that Hart can blow hitters away with 94-96 mph fastballs and chew up their bats with cutters?
  9. You should feel just the opposite.
  10. Trade is more likely, same way we got most of our good bats now. As I've posted before, a trade is more likely because of an overcrowded roster (Pie, Wuertz, Hart, Ascanio, Vicaino, Cedeno, Wells, etc.). A trade is certainly possible, but the guys with options available (Hart, Ascanio, Wells, and some of the "etc.") do not in any way contribute to any supposed overcrowding.
  11. In terms of how the money is paid, it is safe to assume that - unless it is reported otherwise - that the entire signing bonus is paid upfront. That's what I do when I calculate payroll, because I think it's more reflective of cash flow, which I imagine is of primary interest to ownership. For the purposes of calculating luxury tax, MLB accounting spreads the signing bonus out across all of the guaranteed years of the contract (however that is defined). That's how CubFanPhilly does it. To each his own.
  12. Nice. Also, a little contract insight: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090108&content_id=3736641&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc This is a good contract for the current economic state, but I wonder if Jim realizes that these backloaded contracts will kill him at some point. Am I understanding these quotes right? 09: $7m (incl. $2m bonus) 10: $17m (incl. $2m bonus) 11: $10m Doesn't look right, but I can't find any more explanations, or any clarity on the third (option) year, money-wise. Since 7 plus 17 plus 10 doesn't equal 30, probably not. I imagine it's something like: 2009: 5+2 2010: 9+2 2011: 12 '09 and '10 equals $20m (not including signing bonus, which I admittedly don't understand). I assumed the 30 must be the sum of all three years, not including a bonus? The bonus is part of the $30. The reason it's typically mentioned separately is because it's a lump sum paid to the player up front (in Bradley's case, probably so he can buy himself a new lid).

  14. Ya, no kidding: IF: Ramirez, Theriot, DeRosa, Lee OF: Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley C: Soto Bench: Miles, Johnson, Fontenot, Hoffpauir, Bako SP: Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, Harden, Marshall BP: Wood, Marmol, Gregg, Vizcaino, Cotts, Gaudin, Guzman Looks good to me! Guzman out, Peavy in.
  15. Too bad we couldn't have added Bradley, Miles, and Gregg while retaining DeRosa and Wood. Oh, and toss in Peavy for good measure. Now, THAT would have been a ballclub.
  16. I've said it 100 times and I'll quote you for the 101st. I cannot see the Cubs going into the season with only one guy capable of backing up 3rd, SS and 2B. I see no way Hoff makes this team, unless Gathwright is traded or they grow the balls to go with a 6 man bullpen. We have a lot of choices for the seventh reliever spot who have options remaining. Hoffpauir also has options remaining. It would be nice if they switched back and forth between seventh reliever and sixth bench guy depending upon need (workload on the remainder of the bullpen, etc.). It would be nice, but with the required 10-day (or is it 14?) after the demotion, it's hard to do that with a reliever and a position player. It's easier with 3 relievers. 10 days. They could pull it off if they had a second worthwhile optionable position player.

  19. I think this really comes down to Peavy. The Padres dangled him and I think he officially wants out. Peavy's contract extension was based on the Padres staying competitive. I wouldn't be surprised if Peavy forces the trade to the Cubs. I've held firm all offseason that this deal will happen. I'm also expecting it to happen sooner now than later. Both teams still have work to do if Peavy isn't going anywhere, and less and less players will be available to either team the longer this deal takes. How would he do that?
