  1. Caridad? Roquet?
  2. Bradley. Much more of a sure thing, offensively. No talent sacrificed to acquire him in trade. No draft pick lost.
  3. "Obviously, we don't think there's any reason that Ryan won't continue to be a quality, quality pitcher for us."
  4. Official press release: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20081118&content_id=3683517&vkey=pr_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  5. I dont think it has to happen in that order. Hopefully we have more payroll flexibility than is reported because keeping Marquis as a spot starter/long man would really help us out. I doubt that is possible, I meant it more to say that Marquis is going to have to get traded in order for us to get Peavy, not that Marquis has to go before we trade for Peavy. With pitching at such a premium I would think Marquis at 1 year for 7mil. could be attractive to maybe a team like the Rangers, Orioles, Giants, Bluejays, Indians, or Tigers who could use a guy to go 180+ innings at get them 10-13 wins. Giants, yes, but Marquis pitching in the Big Boy League could be very, very ugly.
  6. I'd still like to revisit the Marquis for Randy Winn scenario that was thrown around last offseason.
  7. I don't envy Hendry on this decision. It's pretty much inevitable that Dempster won't come close to repeating last year and will fail to live up to a new contract. However, the Cubs don't have many options in the rotation. Hopefully Dempster will be able to throw 200 innings every year and perform at an above average level. He should be able to be better than Marquis has been and there is value in getting decent pitching over many innings. Sadly, there aren't many other places for Hendry to spend this money. Of course, most of that is a result of his gross incompetence.
  8. Please forgive me if there already exists a thread dealing with this. Any predictions on who we might add to our 40-man roster, if anyone?
  9. Perrotto predicted that the Cubs would sign Adam Dunn. Zero credibility.
  10. If I had fifty cents in my pocket to bet, I'd bet that Dempster leaves if he can find a team to give him a fifth year at similar dollars per year. I don't think he'll leave for a million or two more per year over four.
  11. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/as-giants-battl.html $40/4 for Rafael Furcal? Jim, offer $44/4 if he'll sign today.
  12. Wow, talk about gutting the farm system .. I heard an interview with Gary Hughes on XM yesterday. He said the Cubs are in all out win now mode. I guess they figure the new owner will give them the money they need to rebuild the farm down the road. Of course the fallacy there is that money is what's needed to rebuild a farm system. Buying up the guys that fall in the draft due to signability can only get you so far, and often that backfires. What's really needed is superior amateur scouting, drafting, and player development. And time. We are in deep, deep trouble.
  13. Paul Byrd and Livan Hernandez, come on down! Randy Wolf and Josh Fogg, you too! Hendry is drunk and has a fist full of cash!
  14. If there were a "Hall of Fame for Bad GMs", Jim Hendry would be an inner-circle, pantheon member.
  15. After 2009. If someone can hide Hendry's checkbook so he doesn't re-sign Gregg, the trade could work out just fine. Regardless, Hendry is dreadful.
  16. If we're lucky. More likely, Old Punch Drunk will sign him to a ridiculous extension.
  17. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3700869
  18. I'm detecting sarcasm... *hopefully* OK, forty years.
  19. Hendry is awful. One of the worst GMs of the past fifty years.
  20. The only chance we have to win a playoff series is to take the lead in the first game and never relinquish it on the way to a Game 1 victory. If we fall behind at any point in any game played when the series is tied, it's over. Zero chance to win.
  21. Only mildly plausible scenario: DonnieD knows Peavy personally. Peavy says there are no circumstances under which he'll agree to go to Atlanta. Peavy says that the San Diego ownership situation is such that Towers must trade him. This leaves the Cubs as the only legitimate suitor. Very, very unlikely.
