  1. why? To provide a convenient place to discuss the malfeasance in the Cubs' front office.
  2. Can we please stop saying that our 2007 regular season was good? Considering how bad the first 6-8 weeks of 2007 were, I think the 2007 was pretty good. Do those weeks not count?
  3. Can we please stop saying that our 2007 regular season was good?
  4. I hope Hendry is watching. Amateur player scouting and development, you punch-drunk SOB.
  5. Maybe something like the Pierre package. Ceda, Atkins, Veal/Russell Maybe something involving Rich Hill.
  6. I would trade Soriano for Boston's equivalent of Mark Pawelek. Of course, Boston probably doesn't have a Mark Pawelek. Their amateur player procurement and development organization isn't a joke.
  7. Bruce confirms the horrible news: http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/770
  8. It doesn't matter. Peavy won't waive his NTC. All together, or just to play for the Yankees? To play for an American League club.
  9. Helpful link: http://thecubreporter.com/cubs-40-man-roster
  10. Right now, we have the following players under contract: LF - Alfonso Soriano ($16,000,000) RF - Kosuke Fukudome ($11,500,000) 3B - Aramis Ramirez ($15,650,000) 2B - Mark DeRosa ($5,500,000) 1B - Derrek Lee ($13,000,000) SP - Carlos Zambrano ($17,750,000) SP - Ted Lilly ($12,000,000) SP - Jason Marquis ($9,875,000) RP - Jeff Samardzija ($1,300,000) Subtotal - $102,575,000 The Cubs have team options on Henry Blanco ($3,000,000) and Rich Harden ($7,000,000). They may decline the option on Blanco and try to re-sign him for less. Barring a bad report on Harden's arm, they'll exercise the option on him. For this accounting, let's assume they exercise both options. Subtotal - $112,575,000 The Cubs have three arbitration-eligible players: Reed Johnson, Neal Cotts, and Chad Gaudin. Let's assume they re-sign all three. Johnson ($3,500,000). Cotts ($1,200,000). Gaudin ($3,500,000). These figures may be slightly high. Subtotal - $120,775,000 I've assumed that there will be seven auto-renewal players on the roster - Felix Pie, Ryan Theriot, Geovany Soto, Ronny Cedeno, Mike Fontenot, Sean Marshall, and Carlos Marmol. I've allotted $500,000 for each. Subtotal - $124,275,000
  11. Great. Let's put more money in the hands of our drunken sailor of a GM.
  12. I disagree with how you characterize them. Manny Ramirez or Albert Pujols are much more of a SABR guys dream, if there is one. To be fair, there are other players who are more of a "tools guy's dream" than Soriano.
  13. The Cubs may have inquired, but The Sweater Vest Kid probably asked for Soto and Marmol in return.
  14. Unfortunately, that role is going to be taken by Kosuke Fukudome.
  15. Bruce, I hear this a lot. This team has issues. An unsettled CF situation. No viable major league RF. A below average offensive first baseman. 40% of its starting rotation medically questionable. An extremely shallow bullpen. That's not even addressing the square-peg-in-a-round-hole left fielder or the barely adequate shortstop.
  16. Jim Hendry will come to your house, hand you a check, and kick you in the nuts. You will then thank him and make an appointment for the same time next year.
  17. Yeah, that's what happened. Joe won't be respected for long if he keeps laying out nonsense like that.
  18. I thought that we were talking about the team that just finished the season.
  19. This is an excellent post.
  20. If you're going to pay a guy twenty million bucks a year, the smart thing to do is to play him where he's most likely to maximize his performance. Teixiera belongs at 1B. If you sign him, you'll have to get rid of Derrek Lee. I don't think Teixiera is a realistic option.
  21. Ryan Theriot's value is sky high?
  22. That's one of the reasons he might be available. He's going to start getting "expensive" (by Marlins standards).
