  1. Hoops, what do you know about the Indians' payroll situation and their willingness/need, if any, to trade Jake Westbrook? Might they have to move him to retain Millwood? He seems like the kind of guy Hendry might target. Durable, innings eater, ultra groundball profile, reasonable contract.

  3. MacDougal is way better than any of our in-house youth, with the possible exception of Wuertz. Also, he's closed successfully before and I'm sure they'd like to have another guy in the bullpen with some closing experience. He'll be cheap in terms of money and will only require a year-by-year commitment for the next three or four years.
  4. Nice post, but are there any reasonable people suggesting that Pierre is more valuable than Dunn? Suppose Pierre can be acquired for one out of options pitcher, one Rule 5 eligible pitcher, and one other pitcher in neither of those categories. Suppose Dunn will cost Pie, Hill, Pinto, and Wuertz. Which is better for the organization? You may say Dunn, but that's arguable, whereas Pierre>Dunn is not.
  5. i'll believe that a team run by sandy alderson will go after jacque jones when i see it. This is a team that recently traded for Vinny Castilla.
  6. I don't know. My guess is that it's just an extension of the "can't trade draft choices" rule.
  7. Can't trade new draftees until the following June.
  8. Even without a long term deal, you have Dunn for two more seasons. That's great, but I'm not going to trade Felix Pie for that. I might be talked into Rich Hill, but I'd rather not.
  9. Are you going to insist that the Reds provide a negotiating window for you to sign Dunn to a long term deal? The cost in talent just went up. Are you going to make the trade contingent on Dunn signing such a deal? Good luck.
  10. If you want Dunn you can't tell the Reds you have untouchables in the minors. Everyone must be available. Fair enough, but you have to factor in the extreme likelihood that, even if you acquire him, Dunn will be an Astro after 2007.
  11. If I didn't have to take Milton, I'd offer the Reds the following for Dunn: I take Rich Hill and Felix Pie off the table. They can pick any two minor leaguers or young major leaguers (not Zambrano or Prior). At that point, I can pull one more guy back off the table. They get to pick one more guy.
  12. Anyone who falls for the Rotoworld concoction that Pierre is "probably" going to get $7-$8 next season is stunningly naive.
  13. Haven't you heard? Hits don't matter. Only walks.
  14. SS Rafael Furcal CF Juan Pierre 1B Derrek Lee 3B Aramis Ramirez RF Geoff Jenkins LF Matt Murton C Michael Barrett 2B Ronny Cedeno
  15. That can't be right. Roberts is going to be on the Cubs bench next season. :D
  16. Over time, Cruz's command of the fastball got worse, not better.
  17. Our first round draft pick is protected. We can't lose it, regardless of what free agent(s) we sign.
  18. But in RF, he isn't nearly enough of a power impact to bat 5th. NL average for #5 spot in the batting order in 2005: .271/.340/.454/.794
  19. How much $$$ is left over... still a chance at getting another pitcher or 2? That lineup would leave enough money to bid heavily on A.J. Burnett, if you wanted to.
  20. When another team is willing to give you talent in exchange for no talent, you have to accept the offer, especially if no money is committed. You don't even have to commit any money to the guy until December, for Pete's sake! At that time, if you don't want him, nontender him!
  21. Hendry should offer Furcal a deal structured similar to the one I wanted them to offer Beltran last season. Four guaranteed years. Fifth year vests with a certain number of games played/started. If Furcal doesn't reach that target, the Cubs can exercise a high-ish option. If the Cubs decline that, Furcal can exercise a low-ish option. If necessary, add a sixth year under the same terms.
  22. Pierre in CF. As for RF, rumor has it that the Cubs are going to bring Mike Vail out of retirement.
  23. I knew that, but I didn't really feel the need to go into that level of detail. Thanks.
  24. via the Arlington Heights paper, whatever that is Heresy! That's the home of our very own, the great Bruce Miles!
