    That would be such an inequitable trade that, if it's on the table, Hendry should make it even pre-Furcal.

    If the Mets are foolish enough to trade Aaron Heilman for Todd Walker, Hendry should make it happen immediately.

    I originally thought that there might have to be a trade or two made this week before the deadline for adding minor leaguers to the 40-man roster. I thought we might need to clear roster space. But, now, the roster stands at 37 and there are at least two guys we can take off with no heartburn (Lewis and Aardsma). That would open five spots - enough for 5/7ths of: Pie, Nolasco, Marshall, Marmol, Ryu, Sing, and Brownlie. After that, though, there will have to be some 2- or 3-for-1 trades made, because there's going to be a roster crunch when we start adding new core players.

    What is the point? Why should Hendry be fired for trading prospects for a solid if not spectacular rightfielder? It certainly makes more sense than signing Neifi and Glendon and he didn't get fired for that. I will be surprised if either Pie or Murton has even one season (albeit happily surprised) that surpasses Abreu's 2006. The point is that money is an extremely valuable commodity (I can't believe I had to type out that sentence). Gillick is hamstrung by the money he owes Abreu. Hendry is in great shape with all the money he has available. It would be beyond stupid to help Gillick out of his money mess and give him cheap, top young talent in addition.

    If Hendry trades Murton, Hill, or Pie for Bobby "I'm owed $30 million over the next two seasons but I couldn't even get my OPS over .900 last season" Abreu, he should be fired at once.

    Vesting options cannot be based on any sort of statistical performance criteria other than games played, games started, pitching appearances, games finished (as a pitcher), etc. Things like OPS, OBP, SLG, HR, RBI, hits, run scored, etc. are off limits.

    In the fairly unlikely event that Cedeno will be shopped, there's no way it happens until Furcal signs.

    Via free agency, I expect that Hendry will obtain Furcal, one middle reliever, and 1-2 bench guys. Via the trade route, I expect that Hendry will obtain our new CF, our new RF, one middle reliever, and 1-2 bench guys. The starting pitcher is a tougher call.

    One other thought - ER was a better free agent then Furcal. Have another drink, buddy boy. It's obvious that you're all liquored up.

    Please tell me you're not comparing Rafael Furcal to Shawon Dunston. I always appreciated Shawon's all out hustle, but man, he was not a good major league baseball player.

    Sure, the market ultimately determines the price, but the performance of an agent can affect the market. Like Kinzer said, "There's only one Rafael Furcal". This isn't frozen concentrated orange juice we're talking about. "Mortimer, your brother is not well!"

    Who plays SS in your world next year? I would hope for Nomar, but who do you have? I want Furcal, but if my only choices are Furcal at $60/5 guaranteed or Nomar at $12/2, I'm using either Neifi or Ronny and spending a boatload of money on the outfield and the pitching staff.

    Good, durable players who bring a lot to the table cost a lot of money. If you want good, durable players who bring a lot to the table for little money, develop them yourself or trade top prospects for them.

    Offensively, Nomar's upside is gigantic. He could very easily put up a .300/.350/.500 season, whcih at short, would be tremendous. It's too bad it would only be in 50 games.

    Todd Walker. How can any one player be so vastly underappreciated and so grossly overrated all at the same time?

    $38/4 guaranteed. Fifth year vests at $10 with 150 games started. If the fifth year doesn't vest, Furcal can exercise a player option at $8. If Furcal declines that option, Cubs can exercise a club option at $12. If necessary, add a sixth year under the same terms as the fifth year.

    Scouts and professional baseball people say so. He was available in the Rule 5 draft last season - maybe even the last two years. If there was any real chance of him doing so, he'd have been taken and given a shot.

    Is it completely out of the realm of possiblility to think Dwaine Bacon could give you the same OBP and SB% as Pierre? In the sense that nothing is out of the realm of possibility, then no. Within the confines of reality, yes, it's impossible.
