  1. Yep, MLB teams are free to sign undrafted Japanese prospects. They haven't pursued any of the big name Japanese high school players historically, though. Kind of an unwritten rule between the two leagues.
  2. Your final question answered your first two. International players aren't subject to the MLB draft. In addition, MLB teams are hands off players drafted by NPB (Japanese) teams per the working agreement between the two leagues. The opposite is true as well.
  3. I'd be shocked to see it happen so soon. Darvish is 6 years away from free agency.
  4. Not yet, but he's got until 2010 to do so and still be younger than Fuld when Sam won it.
  5. what? with all the $$$ Tim is paying you? The Dragon's store won't ship to the US.
  6. It's an image of his official Chunichi Dragons road jersey. I don't own one.
  7. No way in one of the corners, easily in center.

  9. That reads like a preliminary listing to me. Fukudome's contract details are pretty spotty compared to the others listed on that page. I wouldn't worry about it until more information on the agreement is made available. During the conference call to announce the signing, Joe Urbon stated that Fukudome would be in Chicago for a least the next four years, and no mention was made of an out clause after three.
  10. Few are Ichiro good. Much more accurate than Sosa's.
  11. OK, seriously, somebody pinch me. Meh...out of all that Jim thought the left-handedness was the most important part.... Baby steps, Banedon. Baby steps.
  12. That reads a lot less absolute than your first statement. I suspect he'd like that option too. Haven't read anything that suggests he's going to insist on it, though. Have you? I think he'd like that option, if only to use it as negotiating leverage for his next deal. Of course he would. It takes nine years for a player to qualify for free agency in Japan. But we're still guessing here -- an educated guess that feels right, but still a guess. He might happily sign a 4-, 5-, or 6-year deal after all.

  14. I'll believe that when I see it. Hideki had similar things to say when he initially signed with the Yankees. I doubt he returns to Japan after three years. He'll need a mandatory release clause in any deal less than six years to be a free agent anyway, although I suspect he'll get one.
  15. No doubt there's an element of risk, but you're overstating it with that comparison. Career numbers in Japan, 10 season sample for each: .305/.397/.543 Fukudome .277/.333/.387 Taguchi Everything I've heard is a lesser version of Hideki, perhaps with better defense. At least, that's what I'm picturing. Hideki came over on a 3/21, then signed a 4/52, which is an even $13m per year. Would it surprise anybody if Fukudome signed 3/39 right off the bat? Yeah, it's the extra power that makes Hideki the better hitter. Fukudome is a much better defensive player. A lot closer to Ichiro than Hideki in terms of defense. Two years ago, I would've been shocked to see a player straight from Japan sign for that kind of money. In this market, no, I wouldn't be surprised.

  17. I think you're putting too much thought into this. What benefit would if be for the Tigers to come out and say they are out of the race for him if they know he's coming to the US? I suspect they just want their rabid fan base to focus on something else because they know they can't sign him.
  18. The Tigers are not Fukudome's old team but I think your reasoning otherwise is spot on.
  19. Not sure what the projection is, but his former club offered him $5M per to stay, and the Yomiuri Giants have the means to double that if they're serious about signing him.
  20. Has he even become a FA yet? I haven't heard if he's filed. It would be nice if it were true I don't think he's declared yet. Kuroda has. The official list of NPB players who have declared for free agency will not be released until after November 12.
