  1. The Cubs described him as a first round talent in the original article.
  2. I thought he could throw 89 MPH's? I read that comment as an average arm for an MLB shortstop, which is certainly still above average compared to the average for MLB players.
  3. Cool. I remember seeing this mentioned somewhere. I read Searching for Tendulkar a few years ago, a book about four Americans' travels through India teaching baseball. Not the best book, the author and his friends come across as pretty boorish. But I do remember them talking about how quickly the kids picked up hitting and throwing a baseball.
  4. Even better. Where'd you read that?
  5. He's 18, a senior in high school.
  6. Didn't see this mentioned anywhere.
  7. Snood posted this in another thread and I agree completely.
  8. Are you defending the shirts now? Or still just fixated on whether the message is racist or not? Why split that hair when you think, "They are insensitive, rude, offensive, stereotypical and wrong?"
  9. The Cubs own the rights to the cub head image that appears in the shirt.
  10. I don't need to be victimized by racism to be appalled by it.
  11. Thank god the Cubs have abandoned their scouting efforts in Asia.

I'm under the impression Hughes has two more seasons left on his contract after this season. So he's not off the books until after the 2009-2010 season.

    The NBA thread

I was being sarcastic...like I said earlier this was basically a swap of bad contracts(Wallace for Hughes), the only differnce, every now and then Hughes actually resembles an NBA player. Cleveland definelty was a terrible fit for him though. I don't know how often a player with an 11.97 PER can look like an NBA player. Hughes has managed to be slightly worse than even Wallace this year. Maybe a change of teams will help both players rebound. I'm hoping they'll just park Larry at the end of the bench.

    The NBA thread

I'm all for progress. Hughes isn't it unless he can miraculously return to 2004-05 form. His PERs have been Duhon-like the past couple of seasons so I'm not holding my breath.

  17. I agree 100%. Nothing that went on occured on northside, so I'm not sure how it pertains to here. Don't agree too hard. You're not an innocent party in this either.
  18. I was intrigued by Nakajima a couple years ago but now not so much. He regressed last year and I have my doubts he'd stick at SS in MLB. Kawasaki wasn't on my radar. He won't be a free agent until after 2012 and I haven't read anything about him wanting to be posted. I agree there's always more talent on the way. MLB still has done a solid job of mining the best players. Not many superstars left.
  19. Thanks. Outside of Aoki and maybe Abe, I can't think of any hitters left in Japan worth coveting with Fukudome's departure.
  20. Good stuff, Meph. If you have numbers for the following, I'd be curious to see them. Shinnosuke Abe Takahiro Arai Hiroki Kokubo Kenta Kurihara Shuichi Murata Hiroyuki Nakajima Yoshinobu Takahashi
  21. Why would you call that a competitive advantage? http://www.kettering.edu/~drussell/bats-new/corkedbat.html
  22. What does that even refer to? A corked bat doesn't help you hit a baseball any farther.
  23. His father is Iranian and I suspect our current foreign policy in the Middle East makes him feel uncomfortable. Joking? I mean, his dad went to FSU and obviously spent a lot of time in America. I don't think he's afraid to come to the US or that strained US-Iranian relations would make him not want to play on the world's largest stage. I wasn't joking. I haven't read any quotes from him that express a concern, but I read something a couple of years ago that suggested it. I don't remember the specifics other than what I posted, and I didn't read the Rotoworld blurb. Did they suggest other reasons why he doesn't want to play in the US? That's a big granted but there certainly could be something more to Yu's resistance.
  24. Wouldn't that be a major reason WHY they would do it? This might have been mentioned before, but does the team get to use some of that money towards player acquisitions? Historically, teams in Japan have been viewed and used as marketing vehicles for their parent organizations. Although this is starting to change somewhat, I suspect most of the posting fee would go directly to Nippon Meat Packers, Inc. I'm not sure how that would make a huge posting fee less attractive. His father is Iranian and I suspect our current foreign policy in the Middle East makes him feel uncomfortable.
  25. You think 92 wins will be enough to beat out either the Red Sox or Yankees, whichever one doesn't win the East?
