  1. I wouldn't concede the title to the Cubs yet... Brewers still have 7 against the Padres, 9 against the Pirates, 3 against the Reds, and 3 against the Astros Regardless if its as the division champ or the wild card, we are going to the playoffs. This is a net loss for the Cubs. The Reds with or without Dunn aren't going to impact our shot at the playoffs. The Dbacks with Dunn are most likely going to impact our shot at getting to the WS.
  2. Reportedly, one of the tactics they tried to use to get Giles to accept the trade is that they are going to slash their payroll from $74M to $40M next year! http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080810/news_1s10bbcol.html
  3. Given your political ideology I find that about as hard to believe as a similarity between Cuban and Loria. :D
  4. The luxury tax threshold in 2009 is 162M. The 2008 Cubs payroll is 118M...yeah, theres still plenty of room to skyrocket without even invoking the luxury tax.
  5. Is defensive efficiency calculated by fielding percentages? Just trying to figure out if maybe that has something to do with it... Don't quote me on this, but I believe defensive efficiency is the % of balls in play that are converted into outs. Yup...1-BABIP
  6. I think Cuban would be too smart (ie sabermetric) to invest that much money in a closer, especially one that isn't elite anymore.
  7. Its not exactly close, but you can drop her off and park ez out on broadway/halsted/grace.
  8. Yeah... no way they let him go. I also can't see the Cardinals letting that happen. tatis, endy chavez, ludwick, schumaker...the corner OFs playoff contenders are made of
  9. Exactly. The only way it could get lamer is if the phrase "pixie dust" was used.
  10. I think the Wild Card is really good for baseball. It keeps more teams in contention deeper into the season which leads to more ticket sales. Expanding to 4 divisions per league would end teams season earlier than the current system. Additionally, it allows for better teams to get into the playoffs. The Brewers are much better than whoever will represent the West this year. I would expand, creating an AL central team and an AL west team. Most likely Indianapolis and Portland or Las Vegas. None of those areas are really important to any current teams so it would be much easier to get them passed. Areas like metro NJ or any city in Texas would hurt current teams. That would make each league with 16 teams, 5 in each of the East and West and 6 in the Central for both leagues. Scheduling would be VERY VERY easy. Another alternative could be moving the Rangers to the AL central and putting AL West teams in Portland AND Vegas.
  11. You hit the nail on the head. Looking at that makes me a bit uncomfortable. It doesn't really seem fair. I guess it's just one of those things like a batting record because of consistency. For example, it took Pete Rose 2,619 more AB's to get 4,191 hits than Cobb took, or like Aaron beating Ruth (almost 4,000 more AB's to get 714). Well, those arguments are apples and oranges to this one because those are cumulative stats, not rate stats like ERA+.
  12. No, you should use your best pitcher in the highest leverage situation. That may not always be the 9th, but its not always NOT going to be the 9th. Borowski was a terrible choice in Cleveland because while he was about their fourth best arm there was a big difference between him and the better guys in their pen. You don't want to be throwing crap out there in the 9th in save situations because a lot of the time those are going to be high leverage (not always, but usually). If you have to name a closer, don't make it your best guy, but don't make it one of your worst. And thats what Borowski was in Cleveland.
  13. Well, it is possible that we claimed him, but I'm guessing that a contending team with a worse record in the NL claimed him as well (and has precedence over us) like the Cards or the Mets.
  14. Awww, too bad, I'll be in the bleachers Friday.
  15. LOL...look...I agree the decision was awful, but come on. Lee should tell Piniella what to do? That's possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Lee should have taken out his iphone from his back pocket and gone to fangraphs and shown Lou that the win probability was 66.8% and therefore a high leverage situation and he should use one of his better relievers. God damn you, DLee.
  16. And I had the best seats I'll ever have in my life for this game...section 24 Row 1. SON OF A BEEHIVE!!!!!
  17. Perhaps, but then again, maybe they were only willing to get him involved in the bidding process, in order to drive up the price. Oliver Stone stuff there. But isn't that what happened in Boston? Its not unprecedented.
  18. If he could play SS, then it wouldn't hurt...too bad he can't.
  19. He's right. That you don't cover as much ground in CF? No, that it's the easiest place to stay healthy in the OF. Well to be fair, every OF position is the easiest place to stay healthy if you let every ball fall for a hit like Griffey.
  20. Moss is a 4th/5th OF Hansen is a set up man Morris is a pretty decent starter (a Logan White first rounder) but hes 3 years away Moss Hansen and LaRoche are all ready to help the ML team. will Hansen get a shot to close in Pitt w/ Capps out? Wasn't he a closer in college, or am I thinking of another Sox prospect? Yeah he did close at SJU and was one of the many closing prospects for the BoSox. He definitely wont step in right away but if he has a good second half I can see him being annointed closer in the offseason or next year.

  22. Bryan Morris is the guy no one probably knows about... As Jay mentioned he was the Logan White's 2006 1st rounder (26th overall). DRays also drafted him 88th overall in 2005 (if that aint a ringing endorsement by 2 teams who have the best draft history, I don't know what is). He was a 6'3" 175 lb righty CC guy, who started off as a 19 yr old in rookie ball, 11.92 K/9 but 6.03 BB/9 in 60 innings. Looks like 2007 was a lost year (TJS?). In 2008 hes in the midwest league with an 8.18 K/9 and 3.16 BB/9 as a 21 year old.
  23. Hey guys, either merger or whatever, but most of this convo is going on over in the ESPN thread...
  24. Jay Jaffe (1:39:45 PM PT): Robo-thal says: Manny Ramirez + $7 mil to LA Jason Bay to Boston Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris (LA #1 in '06, i think), Craig Hansen and Damien Moss (both BOS) to PIT
