  1. "second team"?...nope.
  2. The Pirates and Royals are most likely rooting for the Cubs. We are encroaching upon their #1 overall amateur draft selection.
  3. wow, those must be 20 telling innings that marmol has thrown. I didn't see the game, but Marmol gave up 7 runs yesterday, right? He pitched well the first game he started, but how can you state that he's shown more potential than Hill ever will? As many have suggested, Hill needs to get 8-10 consecutive starts in the majors at this point so that the organization can truly evaluate him.
  4. I concede. He now has no value, has largely contributed to the Cubs demise since '03, and has accumulated a fortune larger than the GDP of Somoa.
  5. he won't be a reliever I've heard because it takes him a LONG time to warm up. Baker said he could have him start warming up an inning early and he still might not be ready. its sounds to me like Wood is starter or nothing material. Yeah...I'm not sold on this until someone other than Baker makes a concrete statement indicating that Wood cannot be a reliever.
  6. If Wood's arm/shoulder/elbow are all structurally sound, then why in the hell would he be alluding to a possible shutdown for the season? If he can only throw 60 pitches before hitting a "wall", then he becomes a reliever. Period. He becomes a reliever this season, so that the Cubs can make an "educated' decision about whether to buy out the contract. If he's a dominant closer, and he can pitch several times a week in that role, then perhaps the Cubs pay him next season (he'd have to be more than dominant in the closer's role) and sign him for less per season as a closer thereafter. I understand that he's frustrated about not being able to start this year, but again....I don't want to hear him talking about shutting down for the year b/c he can't throw more than 60 pitches.
  7. I was basing the comparison on earlier in the year as I haven't watched the Cubs play very much in the last month and a half. Judging from the numbers though, I was way off target. Edit - one really shouldn't try to make a comparison b/w the very detailed hitting statistics of one player and a perception of another player based upon a limited visual evaluation. Earlier in the season, it did appear to me that Jacque was mostly a pull hitter, occassionaly powering a ball to the opposite field gap, and very rarely hitting a ball to LF with any authority.
  8. The stats BK provided that outline where (RF, RCF, etc.) Pie puts balls into play and how (FB, GB, LD, etc) he puts them into play suggest that Pie is in the mold of Jaqcue Jones, IMO. I don't have the same numbers for Jones right in front of me when making this comparison, but Jones certainly hits mostly line drives and sharply hit ground balls to right field. From watching Jones hit in '06, it's apparent that he hits a lot of popups and lazy fly balls to left field when he reaches for outside pitches instead of driving the ball to LF Judging from the stats, Pie takes a similar swing at these outside pitches. Both Jones and Pie hit a significant amount of line drives to the opposite field gap. Both strike out a tremendous amount. Am I mistaken? I'd love to see the same stats for Jacque. Does the comparison stop there? I wonder if their pitch sequence tracking stats are similar.
  9. In contrast to those that are watching other teams in lieu of watching the Cubs, I'm simply not watching much baseball these days. I don't have an interest in following other teams. MacPhail, Hendry, and Baker - why have you taken the game I love away from me? Why? No worries...golfing, boating, and my girlfriend are filling the void....in that order. :^o
  10. The "bottom line" is not the true problem as over 90% of teams that have won the World Series have done so with a payroll smaller than that of the Chicago Cubs. MacPhail, Hendry, Baker, etc. simply haven't made wise decisions. I'm very unhappy with this team as well, but I'm a bit puzzled when you reference a conspiracy b/w the Cub's front office and the "briefcase crowd". I'm not sure where country clubs come into the picture either....misdirected angst, IMO. Also, it's my opinion that a boycott would likely do more to coerce change than sending a letter.
  11. He's hot man...dang ol' blew right past that mendoza line in the past two games...dang ol' gotta let that hot bat help us or something, ya know?
  12. Anyone know where Fred has been? How many more shutouts do we need for the the all-time season record?
  13. The term "heart of the order" really can't be used this year.
  14. LOL...after Eyre's fundamental mistake (not covering first), ESPN focused the camera on Dusty Baker. The camera angle was such that Dusty could be seen only between the batter's legs. I'm not certain if the symbolism was intended, but I was amused.
  15. I'm not sure how many of you are watching the ESPN broadcast, but Stone quoted Berkman as saying that Kerry has to be pitching with a good deal of pain judging by what he was heaving up to the plate last night. We certainly didn't need for Berkman to make this statement to know that Kerry is far from 100%, but hearing this from an opposing batter is very telling.
  16. Agreed...he took a long time to get to first on that play, IMO.
  17. Does Dusty have anyone who can fix Blanco? perhaps he could be paired w/ Z for some OTJ hitting instruction????
  18. Why do you think they have been giving him extra days off? So other teams cannot expose him as fast. Give me a break. Overall, he's pitched ok. He's comming back from shoulder surgery. he probably won't be 100% for awhile. It it what it is. Right now he is a shell of his former self. Do you honestly think he's going to get at 100% during midseason? I'm going to go on record and say resigning him would be a bad idea unless it is for very cheap. This is like April for Wood. It's what, his 4th start? Resigning him is another issue. Agreed...this is Wood's April. Did he or did he not have better stuff in his last outing? Can anyone answer this? Velocity, break, location?
  19. lack of velocity, sharp break, and location will do that to you....Was he lucky during the last outing or was he a bit more crisp?
  20. Has Kerry really lost 5-6-7 mph on his fb?
  21. ummm..wasn't nevin sore after playing first base? ...probably not a good idea
  22. I don't think the Astros are making a poor baseball or business decision. Clemens will likely resume his role as an elite starting pitcher. He will fill the seats. What is good for the Astros may not be good for the Cubs, however. Clemens can't increase attendance at Wrigley. Masochists such as you and I continually pack Wrigley already.
