I never get too caught up in those rankings. When the Cubs were ranked near the top, it was with Patterson, Kelton, Choi, Goldbach, Christensen, Hill, Cruz, Zambrano. And I got all kind of e-mails back in whatever year it was they drafted Brownlie, with everybody telling me all summer they just HAD to sign this guy. They did. You get Z out of that whole group, and yes, they did turn Choi and Hill into Lee and Ramirez. As somebody pointed out above, they've got a nice handful of guys on their team from their own system. I think Tim Wilken knows what he's doing. I'm interested to see how it pans out. I tried to point out in the story that the Cubs sytem is thought of just fine overall. It just doesn't seem to match up with what Cleveland needs right now.
... Am I missing something here? Was the baby story some kind of elaborate lie? The baby story is accurate. Aramis didn't want it out, for whatever reason. Two of three reporters covering the team respected that wish. One did not. Wow, somebody was a real jerk. No kidding, wow. Wasn't it ESPN that reported the story? Which reporter was it? Let's put it this way: Among newspaper reporters, neither the Daily Herald nor the Tribune ran with it.

This is really the lineup? Considering how much better Johnson has done hitting lower and the order and with runners on (especially in scoring position) and how horrible he's been at leadoff AND that Lincecum is a rightie, this seems rather dumb. 'Tis the lineup.
Hand is hurt near thumb with some swelling. They wouldn't tell us that yesterday. He hit in the cage and did all the drills. Should be able to play tomorrow.
Edmonds had a good quote, though: What was Edmonds asked? Who is 'you'? Dunno. It's from the ESPN game recap. It doesn't say who/what he was responding to. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=280621116 He actually said, "you guys," meaning the Chicago media. I believe a TV reporter asked the question. Jim has been pretty cool to be around, and his teammates have accepted him well.
this was too bad for everyone involved. He'd be the worst GM in club history if it wasn't for Larry Himes. And even then, I'm not convinced he's not the worst. That's two ex-Cubs managers in a year to get another gig managing. When was the last time that a former Cubs manager got another managing job after being fired from the Cubs (okay, I know Dusty wasn't technically fired...)? I can't think of any in my lifetime. Some have been coaches, but I can't think of any other managers. Jim Lefebvre got an interim job in Milwaukee.
Good for Riggs. One of the best I've ever worked with. He's a good manager _ always well prepared. It's too bad he had Ed Lynch as a GM. And Riggs is even a better guy than he is a manager. I never once saw him berate a question or a questioner. And he always had a reasonable-sounding explanation for whatever move he made.
I do think the Cubs will be aggressive in pursuing what they feel their needs are. Hendry has the green light from management to do what it takes financially.
This trade is not going to happen. I'm at home doing some computer training at the office, so I'm not with the team, but I checked it out. Cubs haven't seriously discussed Crisp internally since spring training. One thing about scouts is this: Almost every team has them all over the place. Kravec could have been looking at a number of players. That's what he does. But with Edmonds and Johnson doing reasonably well, and even a little better than that, and Soriano coming back eventually, something like this makes no sense.
I had a little fun with this guy yesterday on the blog: http://blogs.dailyherald.com/blog/18 From what we've been told, the Cubs will use all lower A-ball players after the first inning. They'll bring 16 total minor leaguers. This game has long outlived its usefulness.
