  1. They must not have someone like Lieber in their pen. Their bullpen is pretty spent, too. Sometimes the starting pitcher has to take one for the team.
  2. Lineups Cubs Soriano, LF Fontenot, 2B Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Fukudome, RF Soto, C Theriot, SS Pie, CF Hill, P Pirates McLouth, CF Sanchez, 2B Bay, LF LaRoche, 1B Nady, RF Paulino, C Bautista, 3B Bixler, SS Morris, P
  3. Hill is supposed to start tomorrow. The Cubs would rather have Marquis face the Pirates. If he's feeling OK, he'll start. If not, Hill will start tomorrow and Marquis Friday, as originally scheduled.
  4. It might have been me. I didn't stop at the stand, but I may have been heading back upstairs. My thoughts on Thursday were to get the heck out of town and, "Why is this last game of spring training taking three and a half hours?" Usually, teams try to swing at the first pitch on get-away day and have a two-hour game, but with minor leaguers pitching for both teams and most of the regular hitters in there, we were treated to a long day. But overall, a fun spring.
  5. Yes, they are. But Z will probably wear white on Opening Day because it's Opening Day. After that, I suspect he'll wear the softball jersey.
  6. Lineups Brewers Weeks, 2B Cameron, CF Fielder, 1B Braun, LF Hall, 3B Hart, RF Dillon, DH Hardy, SS Rivera, C Mark DiFelice, P Cubs Johnson (Reed, not Lance), CF Soriano, LF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Fukudome, RF Ward, DH DeRosa, 2B Cedeno, SS Blanco, C Cory Bailey, P (37 years old, drafted in 1991 by Boston)
  7. Sinus problems. Still feeling effects of upper-respiratory bug that's hit a lot of people down here.
  8. do they "get it" when you make those jokes, or is it straight over their heads? Depends on the mood of the day. Hendry will say to me, "Hey, I see you threw me a slider on the black." That's his way of getting it.
  9. Here guys....a quote from Bruce Almight's lastest column over at the herald. That's the reason why they signed Johnson, because of the "grit factor." Have fun guys. You should have your eyes checked, pronto!!!! I read it as Bruce making a joke about the grit, and how the Cubs want that, while pointing out that they also need his OBP. Thanks for getting it, Jersey. I think it's OK to inject a little humor now and then. Hey Bruce, any news on Roberts? Just kidding. BTW> I love your humor and the little jabs at the brain trust. Thought I'd throw you guys a veiled "shout-out" on that one. But to be fair, the Cubs had Johnson's on-base percentages throughout their news release. And Jim mentioned it, too. But I still like to have a little fun with them. Oh, and no news on Roberts.

  11. Lou also announced the opening-day lineup: http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=159396
  12. Bruce, what more can you tell us? Is there interest in other players we have not heard mentioned yet? Maybe DaVanon. They like Johnson better. The usual trade suspects are still out there, but as we all know, they're not easily obtainable.
  13. Sox Ozuna, 2B Uribe, SS Konerko, 1B Dye, RF Crede, 3B Quentin, LF Anderson, CF, Hall, C Vazquez, P Cubs Fontenot, SS Soriano, LF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Fukudome, RF DeRosa, 2B Soto, C Pie, CF Lilly, P

  18. He's in. He hasn't walked anybody this spring, and Lou loves that. They didnt' sign him to be a reliever. If he's healthy and doesn't implode late, he's a lock. And even if he does have a bad outing or two, I still think he's in.
