  1. What's funny is that Red Sox are getting their behinds kicked by said White Sox. That's okay, though, because they can all go home and watch Fever Pitch after they get eliminated.
  2. Why can't the Braves sell out a playoff game? Big sections of the stadium were completely empty for game 1. Are the fans there just so accustomed to going to the playoffs every season that for them the LDS is like the regular season? Or is it that they're so used to seeing the Braves eliminated every year that they don't bother? Atlanta is a very big city, the team has a proud tradition, they've got exciting players, so I don't get it, but it is like a running joke about Braves fans at this point. Anyone living in or from the Atlanta area that can shed any light on this?
  3. You might get to see Colby Rasmus, Tyler Herron, and Wilfrido Pujols. Unless they've moved up to Quad Cities by next year.
  4. According to the Fox pregame he hurt them during the Pads' celebration. Double ouch.
  5. I'm not sure it's that simple. If you have two portraits of Abe Lincoln (exact duplicates), and one of them is documented to have been in my attic, while the other has been documented to have been hanging in the halls of the White House, then most people would pay more for the one from the White House, don't you think? Wouldn't that make it "more valuable"? But in your example the "value" comes from it having been in a prominent place not from the work of art itself. It's why people will buy a brick from Busch stadium and not from my house. People are valuing sentimentality not quality there. But if you bought the Abe Lincoln portrait documented from the White House, it's value would not change regardless of where you hang it. I guess it depends on how you view "value". If somebody is willing to pay more for it because it's been in the White House, then I would say that it has higher "value". Likewise, since Pujols is playing on the "White House" of baseball teams, people may perceive that he has more "value". Maybe it's just perception......... I can see your point. If Pujols were on the White House of baseball teams we wouldn't be playing at freakin' noon today and 3 on Thursday.
  6. He would but that's not the case here. Instead we are talking about two players with very similar numbers. The goal of any team is to make the playoffs. What good is finishing over .500 if a team is still third in it's division? Lee contributed a slightly better performance than Pujols, but Pujols' performance has been more valuable. A player on a non-playoff team should only win the MVP if his season has been far and away better than anyone's on a playoff team. That's just my opinion. Give Lee the Hank Aaron award.
  7. Fine, use the entire season. With the exception of slugging Lee and Pujols' numbers are for all practical purposes the same, so give it to the guy who's team made the playoffs. Lee was unbelievable in the first half of the season, and just good in the second half. For half the season Lee did not play like an MVP. Wow. Lee for the season outperformed Pujols in just about every metric, including more all-encompassing ones like VORP, or RC, or RCAA, or BPA, or EqA. That's all there really is to it. And none of it counted for squat.

  9. This is exactly what I would be worried about if I were a Cubs fan. The fact that Hendry is even considering offering Baker an extension should tell anyone all they need to know.
  10. It's worth mentioning that Pujols leads Lee in Runs Scored and Stolen Bases by 9 and 1 respectively. He also played in 3 more games. I think their post all-star break numbers are worth considering: Avg 1. Pujols .321 2. Lee .291 OBP 1. Pujols .440 2. Lee .384 SLG 1. Pujols .635 2. Lee .589 OPS 1. Pujols 1.075 2. Lee .973
  11. FYI, Stl's starters have been horrendous the last month of the season. And our best bullpen arm, Al Reyes, went down today with an elbow problem. Cards over Pads in 4 Braves over Astros in 5 RedSox over ChiSox in 5 Yankees over Angels in 5 Cards over Braves in 6 Yankees over Redsox in 7 Cards over Yankees in 6
  12. I'm waiting to see which Cardinals pitchers show up this post-season. Will it be the Carp, Mulder, and Morris who dominated at various points for long stretches this season, or the pitchers that showed up the last three weeks? Man am I missing Scott Rolen now.
  13. I'd say the 6 game gap between us and Cincy, plus the talent level on the two teams makes us better than them. So you're admitting they aren't as good as Milwaukee?
  14. I wasn't there but from what I've read at places like Cards talk there was plenty of booing. Cardinal nation is very split on this. What McGwire did for St. Louis and for all of baseball was huge. Baseball is still running off of the momentum that '98 fueled. Personally I think it is somewhate hypocritical to outright boo McGwire because the fans are totally complicit in this steriod fiasco. Fans are not poor-suckers duped into believing in unworthy heros. All anyone had to do was look at the guys, Mac, Sammy, Giambi, Bonds, etc. and know from common sense that they didn't get so hulking huge with weights alone. We were just as willing to go along with it as the owners were because baseball was back and better than ever and everyone was having a good time. The players gave us what we wanted and we loved every minute of it. And now so many people sit on their couches in self righteous indignation and demand that these men be booed. I don't think it is that simple.
  15. I'm not disputing that Cox is a great manager, because he is, and this year is in my mind his finest season. But I think the Braves 14 year run has really been aided by the mediocrity of the NL east over that time. Their competition has been the Expos, 'nough said, the Mets, perenial stupid-contract-hander-outers, Marlins, flashes of extreme brilliance but overall terrible, and the Phillies, perenial under-achievers. The 14 year run is more attributable to the Braves system, for which Schuerholz, scouts, and minor league coaches deserve most of the credit.
  16. This is good because if Houston wins the WC we will get to play the Padres in the first round. I really don't like the way we are limping into the playoffs though. The only positives of late are that Matt Morris has pitched very well his past two starts and that Reggie went nuts tonight.
  17. Andruw Jones Not.
  18. The Indians aren't holding up their end of the bargain tonight.
  19. Prior: "They don't have anything that's too bad, but they got middle-of-the-road, average ERAs." That kinda describes Mark himself over that past two seasons doesn't it? He's saying that all the Cubs need to do is overhaul 3/4 of their team and get lucky in the things they can't control like injuries. No problem. I guarantee you Wood will go on the DL at least once next year. It is written in stone. Not to mention that they will still have Dusty next season. It seems like a lot of people here are basically hoping that Hendry will Dusty-proof the team next year. That ain't gonna happen. They are part of the same problem.
  20. I hate that people actually bother with minutiae like this when there are real issues of church and state to be dealt with. Not only is it pointless, not even a substantive problem, but it's stuff like this that gives right wingers an endless supply of ammo that they can use to portray liberals as leftists trying to undermine the fabric of American society.
  21. I watched the game tonight and I think it was probably the first White Sox game I've ever watched. You guys are right. Their tv guys are terrible. I thought Al Hrabosky was a big homer. Hawk makes Hungo look like Peter Jennings. That "he gone" thing is stupefying.
  22. Taking out the world's greatest pitching coach can't help the team. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/0905/18bravesnotes.html This quote is hilarious: Blaine Boyer was standing a few feet from the pitching coach when it happened. "I probably could have caught it if I knew it was coming," the rookie reliever said. "It smoked him, right in the head. It hit him hard, and he hit the ground. I was like, 'He's dead.'
  23. They can get their money back if they want. Or they can stay in the raffle and push the button to release the ball. Not as cool as an explosion, still worth 10 bucks though.
  24. I would clap if I were there. First of all, unlike with other players there is no proof Mac did juice, though I think he surely did. Secondly, it is hypocritical for the fans who were lapping up the 98' spectacle to turn on Mac and others in some kind of self-righteousness. The fact is he and Sammy saved baseball that year, we needed him to be on steriods that year, and we rooted for him even though he looked like some freakish popeye. Who am I to look back now and judge him? He deserves a respectful applause and I think that is what he will get.
  25. Oh god no. If they moved the team to the suburbs I might stop supporting them. I know Clayton is very close in but it's the principle of the thing. It would have also been cool to build the stadium on Grand, like Sportsman's Park was, so they could once again call it the Grand Avenue Grounds.
