  1. Bilk- 1. To defraud, cheat, or swindle 2. To thwart or frustrate 3. To elude $32.5 million for 12 wins in 3 years. Let me know when he wants to give any of the cash back for doing nothing. He tore his labrum and now rotator cuff to swindle the Cubs? and he would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those meddling kids... and that dog.
  2. This time it matters! :wall: And still I don't care.
  3. Having your #6 hitter bunt so that your #7 & #8 hitters can try to drive them in is never a good idea.
  4. A couple random thoughts: The Tigers reportedly are looking for a LH bat. Perhaps Jones' rep as a Sox killer could prove handy there. Could they get Thames? Are the Marlins still looking to trade Cabrera and Willis?
  5. was Larry Anderson a reliever when the Red Sox traded Bagwell for him? During the off season many people here were concerned about the 3 year deals given out to Eyre and Howry. Trading one of them could prevent a repeat of the Mike Remlinger experience, especially since Baker seems determined to run bot Howry and Eyre out there every chance he gets.
  6. GRCubsFan wrote: I don't understand your logic here. Barrett is too valuable to trade because we'd have a hard time replacing him but not valuable enough for a contender to want him? Production from the Catching spot can very well be the difference between a good and great lineup. Therefore if Barrett really is available I'm sure there would be plenty of interest.
  7. So... If Italy wins the World Cup doesn't that make the US co champions since they tied Italy? If France beats Germany in the final, what will the chant be? 1870 1940 or World War Two How sad is it that India has a love of soccer but out of 1 billion people they can find 10 that can play? Same thing for China All kidding aside, this world cup has been pretty exciting.
  8. I can't stand this. way too much of it in today's society. essentially what you are saying is it is understandable to do the selfish thing instead of doing what is best for the good of the whole. to me, there is no greater reason in the world to blame someone than when they are acting out of purely selfish motivation. it is the least understandable thing someone can do. Self preservation is one of our strongest instincts. People that are self sacrificing are the exceptions, not the rule. Baker probably feels that the best way he can help the team is to still be here next year. Baker also feels that winning now is a good thing. He has to think that way or he will lose whatever legitimacy he still has with the players. More importantly, Baker is going to do his job- put the best players on the field- and take his chances.
  9. LF Murton 2nd Walker 1st Lee 3rd Arod C Barrett RF Pagan SS Cedeno CF Pierre That's what I'd do. Baker would switch Murton and Pierre. He'd also flip Barrett and Pagan for R-L-R purposes.
  10. Baker benching Murton is all about saving his job, something that any manager would do. Take a look at this comparison: M Murton CHC-ab- 231-2b- 9-3b- 1-HR- 4-rbi- 22-obp- .336 slg.368 N Perez CHC-ab- 152-2b- 8-3b- 1-HR- 2-rbi- 20-obp- .259 slg.349 Much as I like Matt Murton, much as I believe he has a lot of potential, Baker is not out of line for not playing him. It's easy for us as fans to say the season is over. People like Baker and Hendry don't have that luxury. That being said, at this point I'd rather find out what, if anything, Pagan brings to the table than see Nevin out there the rest of the way.
  11. Offering Pierre arbitration makes sense. Even if he does accept and gets 9 million that would be for a 1 year deal. That's a lot better than giving him a 3 year deal. It makes him an expensive bridge to Pie but it also makes him a decent trading chip at next year's deadline. All that assumes that there isn't a GM dumb enough to give Pierre a multi year deal- which is a pretty big assumption.
  12. I found this quote interesting: Wasn't the idea this year to get speedy players that could put pressure on the defense? The Cubs don't hit and run, they don't steal many bases (except for Pierre) and they don't find a way to get on base. Yet Baker's offense seems to have 2 tactics: the sac bunt or wait for someone to hit a HR. I know many here don't believe in the stolen base or the hit and run. That's not even the point. The Cubs either have no plan, they had a plan but scrapped it or they simply don't have what it takes to make it work.
  13. While that wouldn't really shock me I don't see that happening. The Cubs have struggled mightily against LH pitching. If they send Murton down they have to send Bynum, Womack or Mabry out there against LH pitching. Murton is safe until Pagan returns. Once he's back the Cubs will either demote Murton or try to send Bynum through waivers. Would anyone claim Bynum?
  14. The Marlins are a young team and they have a better record than the Cubs. I'd go so far as to say that there are at least 4 teams that are young er than the Cubs that have better records.
  15. The wheel of excuses turn and turn when it stops, the blame we learn Dusty Baker Wrote: Whoever had "Blame the kids" wins the pool. Everyone else is a loser.
  16. Perfect time to give Dusty Baker that contract extension.
  17. MY brothers and I used to help the Andy Frain Ushers flip up the seats. If you did a whole section they'd give you a free pass for another game. I remember Mike Krukow wearing shin guards ready to go in at catcher during one of those marathon 22-21 games against the Phillies.
  18. With Barrett's suspension looming, the Hank White Cubs should pass the Pirates soon for last place. When that happens what will the excuse be? The wheel of excuses says "Barrett needs to control his temper. He's a gamer but we need him to make better decisions."
  19. The worst part about watching Poland lose to Germany 1-0 in the 99th minute was seeing this stat line on the ESPN2 crawl Astros (Oswalt) at Cubs (Maddux) Rusch: 29 earned runs in 31 IP in his seven starts
  20. ... of last place. Gotta tip your cap to those Pirates. They're both pesky and scrappy.
  21. Does anyone else think he did a Hollywood blacklist thing and named people that they already knew about? DA: "Tell us about your teammates that used steroids!" Grimsley, "Well there's Lenny Dykstra, Ken Caminiti, and Raphael Palmeiro." DA " Anyone else?" Grimsley "There's Giambi and Sheffield"
  22. How "this" has not already been bumped out of the lineup is beyond me. I understand they have enough firepower to make up for his deficiencies, but he has been absolutely horrible. I was thinking the same thing. Hilariously there are Sox fans seriously wanting to trade for Pierre calling into the Score on occcasion... if i'm Jim Hendry, I do this last week If you were Hendry you wouldn't have traded for Pierre in the first place.
  23. When I think about the struggles of young pitchers this year I always come back to Carlos Zambrano's first year Carlos Zambrano 2001 Chicago Cubs W----L------ERA------W-----K------IP 1----2------15.26-----8------4-----7.2 During the 2001-02 off season, everyone was in love with Juan Cruz. Everyone was baffled by the Cubs use of Zambrano (why was he sitting in the Cubs pen as the 14th pitcher when he could be in AAA starting?) At the time Mark Peel said speculated that the Cubs wanted him to face MLB hitters in game situations. Zambrano's stuff didn't magically get better the following years, he simply gained the confidence to trust it. Perhaps that's easier said then done but it can't be done at all while at AAA. I'd like to see the Cubs ship out Rusch by whatever means necessary and put Hill in the Mop up/ spot start role.
  24. Mike Krukow and Larry Biittner were my two favorite Cubs when I was 7.
  25. I don't know a lot about World Cup but isn't it true that few (if any) teams from the western hemisphere have won the cup in Europe (and vice versa)? It will be interesting to see how much the scandal affects the Italian team.
