  1. I don't see where any really good SP are available so the Cubs likely go with the Starting pitching they have. This would be a great time for Guzman to get healthy.
  2. The Cubs are in an unusual position in that they can be both buyers and sellers. While players like Jones and Izturis seemingly have no value, players of their ilk get acquired by contenders every year. If the Cubs decide they can part with Howry (with the return of Dempster, the emergence of Marmol and the prospect of Wood, Cherry or Petrick contributing) he would have some decent value to a contender looking to overpay for BP help. Eyre was used up by Baker last year but he's LH and teams overvalue LH relief pitching-same goes for Ohman who has a little more value. None of that gets a big name hitter but perhaps it gets some prospects to off set the cost of getting another bat.
  3. To be fair, the defensive drills video is really awesome. In fact I'm so impressed I've given it my full endorsement!
  4. I never liked Harry Caray. To me he was a whining old drunk that slobbered into the mike. I actually liked DeWayne Staats and Thom Brennaman in comparison. Steve Stone was much better with his other broadcast partners.
  5. I hate the all star game as much as anyone. Nevertheless, regardless of situation if you have Pujols available the list of people you should let bat instead is very short and does not include Aaron Rowand. I like how they clown posse on BBTN didn't even mention this as the dumbest move ever.
  6. Really? Because this statement: seems to be about defense and this statement: Seem to be about the importance of having a good defensive catcher.
  7. If you already knew that CERA is practically meaningless why use it to prove a point? If I were lecturing you'd be asleep by now
  8. I agree. Bring him up and if he doesn't perform sell him to Japan in the off season.
  9. Is this good or bad? Do you trust Hendry to consider the long term needs of the club? Is it worth it for a legit run this year?
  10. Limit his innings so he still has something left for the stretch run and the playoffs? That would mean sacrficing a little bit of the present for a lot of the future. Unlike the Cubs, the Brewers seem to think that they could be good for a while and have decided to play it safe with a player that should be an important part of their continued success.
  11. Last night the kids make me watch some disney channel movie where this baseball player kid wants to cook instead. One scene he's watching the food network but when his dad comes home he switches to the baseball game. The father asks him "How's Kerry Wood look?" A single tear ran down my cheek.
  12. CERA is mostly worthless even when used to compare catchers on the same team since so many factors change from game to game (opponent, lineup, weather conditions, etc.) CERA is completely worthless when comparing catchers that don't play for the same team. As for the list of defensive catchers above, I'd say their team's success probably had more to do with the pitching staff they were catching rather than their ability to cause a call a good game.
  13. Greater than Poster of the Week?
  14. Never met the guy so how could I know? I've always tried to believe that I'd get along much better with the people here in person even though we may have run ins online. Except of course for Gooney because I have no tolerance for Mets fans. :^o
  15. I would but only if her stage name was Eleanor Roosevelt or Indira Gandhi.
  16. are you the Moonlight Graham from Cubs.com ca. 2001-2002?
  17. Is it time to start questioning whether Cedeno is a better option than Izturis? ~70 ABs is still a small sample but it's getting pretty close to being noteworthy.
  18. It would also have the added benefit of moving Patterson back to 2nd base where he belongs. EPatt was already getting action at LF while Pie was at AAA, the Cubs appear to be making a concerted effort to get him playing time there no matter the Iowa roster. I know but I can always hope that they'll do the smart thing and move him back to 2nd base where he has value beyond the utility role he seems destined for as an OF unless he can play CF.
  19. Age is an issue because he's old for his level. The bolded part: do you mean that his defense has to be better than Murton or Jones? If so I'd agree but that doesn't warrant a promotion, at least not until they can find a new home for Jones. In any case, OF defense is less of a concern than offense right now. In the mean time let Kroeger set AAA on fire. I have no problem exploring other options for the Cubs OF. I just don't see Kroeger being able to supplant Floyd at this point and I doubt if he could outproduce Murton. Very clearly Kroeger has nothing left to prove at AA.
  20. He should be the backup right now. At this point I'm thinking they should go with Soto and Blanco in 2008 (but I'd love to see Blanco leave). Make your order like this: 9 Soriano 13.00 3 Lee 13.00 6 Rodriguez 25.00 5 Ramirez 14.00 7 Murton 0.75 8 Pie 0.35 4 Patterson 0.35 2 Soto 0.35 Give ARod 5/125 to get out of the Bronx. (very favorable compared to his 3/81 remaining that he can opt out of) So what you're saying is by not paying Zambrano $18 mil, Izturis $4 mil and Blanco $2 mil you have already paid for Arod. The only problem is convincing Arod not to follow the ring to somewhere like Boston where he could really stick it to the Yankees or the Angels where he could labor in obscurity, make his money and still have a shot at a ring.
  21. It would also have the added benefit of moving Patterson back to 2nd base where he belongs.
  22. Here's his numbers. To see them in a more user friendly format click on the box score link and then click on his name. TEN SOU AVG G -AB-- R- H-2B-3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS .375 53 176 32 66 12 2 --9 -42 109 22 26-- 6-- 2- .448-.619-1.067 The key stat for Kroeger is that he is 25. With Pie up for the duration perhaps he'll get promoted to Iowa and we'll see if he's figured things out.
  23. Here's the lineup CF Juan Pierre 2nd Davey Rosello 1st Jerry Mumphrey (took PT away from Grace and Palmeiro) C Todd Hundley LF Mitch Webster 3rd That guy that made the should have been an error that kept Wood's 20 K game from being a no hitter RF The 2004 version of Sammy Sosa SS Larry Bowa P Guy Hoffman RP Paul Rueschel Closer- Goose Gossage or Dave Smith
  24. Fox must be a horrible defensive catcher. Does anybody think Fox will hit enough to stick at a corner OF?
