    I guess that just depends on how much stock we put into defensive metrics that we all know to be fairly flawed. They're getting better, but I don't know if I put enough stock in them to put them ahead of what my eyes tell me in a case like Soriano's. Granted, the throwing out runners point is valid. Though you have to wonder when they're going to stop trying to run on him. How do you measure that value?

    I've actually seen them wearing facemasks in the field.

    IN the short term it has to be Vizcaino. He gets paid more than Miles and is more easily replaceably by people likely to perform better. Try and look at it this way: Miles is not worth hating. Long term it's Soriano or Lee. At least Lee adds something defensively. What will Soriano provide in 3 years?

    The fact is that it's probably more likely that Soto gets worse than gets better if those are the only choices.

    If Lee got hurt and missed a significant chunk of time, the lineup becomes: Soriano Fukudome/ Fontenot Bradley Ramirez Hoffpauir Soto Fontenot/ Fukudome Theriot pitcher That lineup is ok. I think most of us would flip Hoffpauir and Soto but Piniella probably opts for the balance and it protects Hoffpauir. Obviously, if 3 of the Cubs best hitters get hurt at the same time that would be bad.

    It was pointed out in another thread that Harvey would have needed to agree to becoming a pitcher, and apparently he didn't want to do so. If that is the case, then Harvey will never see the majors. Fixed since prolly is not a real word and Harvey not making it needs no qualification.

    You have Cashner at both Peoria and Daytona. Are you saying he goes EST to Peoria then Daytona or is that a typo? Seems like they'd want to fast track Cashner if they can and start him at Daytona and hope he earns AA by midseason.

    The job was probably Bako's to lose going into ST and he I guess has played well enough to not lose it. Hill probably needed Bako to fall completely flat in order to win the job. That usually the way things work in ST with Veterans vs. "prospects".

    I don't understand this line. Wouldn't Orton go to the Broncos in any trade for Cutler? If he goes to Denver he starts this season and at least half of next season. At that point he could have established himself as a marketable FA- something he'd never be able to do in the Bears scheme. yea, my only thought is that Orton has always been in Chigao and feels like he's earned the right to stay here and has no desire to be part of a rebuilding situation in Denver. Orton would likely be the starter here or there.... not that we arent in our own rebuildign situation.. The situations are pretty similar. The AFC West is a pretty winnable division next year for Denver if they play any defense at all. Plus any rebuilding program in the NFL lasts maybe a season unless its a cheap franchise like Cincy or a terrible run one like Detroit. That doesn't apply to Denver.

    I think he's hit really well in the spring. I haven't been paying much attention.

    I believe Hill is still around because there are still ss games and they need another catcher. If they weren't going to go with Bako, why did they give him a contract instead of making be a NRI? Or has Hill done something to change their minds? I don't really mind if they go with Hill. It will help morale system wide to give him the job over Bako. He's also a SH which even though he doesn't actually hit at least Piniella won't take that into consideration when deciding to rest Soto.

    Since we're here: Miles, Hoffpauir and Johnson are in Bako is probably the backup based on his MLB experience and his contract. The other spot either goes to another inf or Gathright. It makes more sense to add another inf since Gathright is redundant with John able to play the same postions.

    I like the idea of trading Gathright as he is redundant and also not very good.

    Bear football philosophy has been unplayable for 20 years. Maybe these rule changes will force them to adapt.

    I'll make the Bears a deal, if they trade for Cutler now and it doesn't work out I'll accept without complaint the next 10 mediocre QBs. Since the Bears are getting the 3rd round pick for Berrian they can afford to give up this year's #1 and still be able to fill holes on OL and DL. Cutler would make the current receievers look a lot better as would an improved O line. A better offense that can keep the defense off the field will make the personnel they already have that much better.

    It's important that the Cubs backup catcher does something well. Otherwise Piniella will run Soto into the ground and he'll have nothing left for the playoffs.

    I'll never forget Evans throwing the ball out of bounds (this was before the spike rule) to stop the clock on 4th down.

    I seem to remember another QB that was competing with Avellini and Evans before they drafted McMahon. I think he wound up playing for Cleveland after he left the Bears. Anyone know who I'm talking about? To save time its not Tomczak or slingin' dummy Harbaugh. edit: it was Mike Phipps and the Bears traded their #1 to Cleveland for him.

    Illinois losing wouldn't be so bad if Maryland had also lost. Everyone here assumes that I thought Illinois was going to make a run. Like most people, I thought they'd have a tough time with W Kentucky. I did think they could beat Gonzaga but they had no chance against UNC. Illinois had a much better season than I expected going in. Maybe over the offseason McCamey will decide to play hard all the time next year. Next year should be a fun year for the Big 10.

    Cubs will finish the season 150- 12 with all 12 losses coming at the hands of the pirates.

    Well German has had success in the majors, but yes I'd prefer Koskie over him as well. But Koskie can't play SS. So it's probably not a Koskie or German so much as a Koskie or Hoffpauir/Gathright

    I could see this being one of those years where MSU is the only team that makes it past the first round and then they're gone in the 2nd. At the same time I could see all of them making the sweet 16 except Michigan. I can't help thinking Pitt will be the 1st #1 to lose but looking at their bracket I'm not sure to whom.
