  1. Thanks for your opinion, Dirt Dog. I have an eight year old who loves to play baseball and loves to pitch. I'm not ready to sign him up for something like this just yet. I'd like to see where he's at in about four years. If he still shows the same enthusiasm for the game then it's something I'll consider. I'm not too worried about the one-size-fits-all concept, at least for the younger players. Just watching my son's Little League games and it's obvious to see they need to learn the basics first. Again, thanks for the input.
  2. Problem is, the Reds are going to want Mark Prior. I can hear them saying, "You offered him up for Tejada, you can offer him now."
  3. Anyone here a member of this? http://www.nationalpitching.net/default.asp? Sounds like they have good intentions and list some heavy hitters on their advisory board, including Cubs pitcher (or former Cubs pitcher?) Mark Prior. I'm interested in hearing anything on this association: good, bad or otherwise. And for the coaches out there, real or armchair, what do you even think of the concept. Thanks in advance for your input.
  4. In defense of Gunned, I've worked in a few newsrooms and here's what I've seen. We'll use Phil Rogers' trade prpposal as the example. Editors will not walk up to Phil and say, "Hey we're looking to boost circulation. Why don't you come up with the wackiest trade proposal you possibly can on this whole Miguel Tejada thing." While they will ask Rogers to write a piece specifically on the trade proposal, it's entirely up to Rogers as to what that opinion will be. Perhaps the direction this discussion should go is to assess the motivation behind Rogers' proposal to trade Carlos Zambrano instead. He may think it really is in the Cubs best interest. He may suggest it just to generate more discussion on the topic. Or, in what is becoming increasingly more common these days, he might be trying to generate enough of a buzz to buy him some face itme on TV. It's an all-too-popular (read: lazy) way of filling air time on all those all-sports stations. Circulation numbers do not drive the cost for ad space. Any ad salesperson will tell you demand drives the cost. And any good salesperson knows how to generate demand.
  5. A Cub's source denies a Orioles trade proposal in Wednesday morning's Herald. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=136387
  6. Thats crazy that someone could completely avoid the battersbox or the field... (althought, he could have played in the field, but never made a play). That I can't answer. I don't know whether he ever played an inning in the field, but it doesn't appear as though baseball-reference can answer it either. They have him listed as a DH for his fielding position. :D I do remember him with the World Series Oakland A's though. I always thought he was Claudell's little brother. Not only was Herb older than Claudell, but there is very little evidence that would give one the impression they were related. Herb Washington played during the advent of the designated hitter. Charlie Finley brought the guy in as Oakland's "designated runner."
  7. Would he be further along in his rehab if he had the surgery earlier? No doubt about it. But when you consider how many injuries the guy has racked up over the past couple of seasons, there should also be little doubt that Wood is going to be handled extremely carefully next April, even if by chance he is 100%.
  8. Actually, it's kind of sad that you all would make fun of a Cub fan--as anonymous to us as he may be--for his opinion on a Cubs player. I guess I'll apologize for him since he's not as "enlightened" as you all are.
  9. I understand the principle of the matter. But even if Wood had had his surgery July 1st, he would have been handled with kid gloves come April 2006. I'm certainly not arguing the decision to put him in the pen was a good one. I'm just saying that no matter when he had his surgery, Wood really wasn't going to be much of a factor in the rotation in April.
  10. I think too many people are getting their undies in a bind about Wood not being on the Openind Day roster. With all the off-days, a fifth starter is only needed twice. Maybe Baker lets that fifth starter start three times to keep guys somewhat rested. It's not that big a deal, really.
  11. A four team trade? Impossible! It is going to take a multi-team trade in order to bring the likes of Bobby Abreu to the Cubs. But how are you going to get Jeff Weaver to sign with the Phillies? Too bad sign-and-trade deals are not allowed.
  12. I have a long history of imploring people not to read too much into the printed quotes of Dusty Baker (especially), Jim Hendry, Andy MacPhail, etc., because it's just too hard to get an exact feel on what they're saying. A lot of times they say one thing but mean another. Or they'd rather not talk to the media but do so knowing they'd be ripped more for not saying something. Or quotes are imsinterpreted by reporters and used in an improper context. I'm making an exception this time. Baker sounded a lot like a guy prepared to play out his contract. I'm not going to fault him for not knowing how Felix Pie is playing in winter ball, but to not have good things to say about Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno, two guys who played for you and played well at that, is inexcusable. And while he's right the Cubs have a long history of not playing fundamentally sound baseball, three years as manager is more than enough time to correct it. Can't blame the past 97 years for what happened in 2005.
  13. ESPNews now reporting breaking news that AJ Burnett has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. No link yet, it's on the right side of the information bar at the bottom of the screen.
  14. And just how was he supposed to get Furcal to sign early? Pin him to the floor, shove a pen in his hand and force him to scribble his name on the dotted line? Furcal is not the first free agent to wait until a late suitor comes along with an offer he can't refus and he won't be the last. You point on Pierre is a little harder to argue, although once news of a player's availability gets out, other GM's swoop in with offers of their own, clouding up the picture. Your point on Perez is impossible to ignore.
  15. Do you guys honestly think Len Kasper is going to come on and say one way or another where Rafael Furcal is going to sign? He'd completely blow any confidence Jim Hendry has in keeping this kind of news under wraps. Not to mention jeopardize Furcal's decision. Is it still possible Kasper said what he did? Sure. But I doubt it was his intention to mention it to a fan, only to have it splattered all over a message board. It might just be the first and last time he ever shares any inside information.
  16. Five touchdowns, three field goals and eight safeties and UCLA is right back in this thing!
  17. More than likely it means the "Score" has been reading the Trib and it's a slow news day. They likely are re-reporting Rodger's column. ESPN 1000 is reporting that Rotoworld is reporting that the Score is reporting that Phil Rogers is reporting the Cubs may or may not have a deal to send Kerry Wood to Texas. We'll have more on this when we have more on this.
  18. Hey... five touchdowns, seven field goals and six safeties and Colorado is right back in this thing! That's what I like about college football--you never know!
  19. If it were any other team with a 2-9 record coming into Soldier Field, I'd be a little worried about a letdown. But it's the Packers. No worries about a letdown. And the Bear-Packer hatred runs both ways. I have a few friends who root for the Packers and in this season of turmoil they'd like nothing better than to beat up on the Bears. I know there's a "Bears Still Suck" song thats played over and over again, but is there a "Vikings Still Suck" song too?
  20. If he reads every post in this thread up to this one, he might just run away screaming--like me! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. I think the Cubs had to overspend a little to get Howry and Eyre. I look at it this way; who's going to spend more to get a car: the guy with no car or the guy driving a new Mercedes? The Cubs bullpen was atrocious in '05 and agents negotiating for relievers knew this.
  22. Thanks for the updates. I, too, think Patterson and Walker are goners. I think Hendry feels he needs to make a splash this offseason. And he's indicated he's willing to wheel and deal to make it happen. SHould make for an interesting winter meeting in a couple weeks.
  23. I don't keep up with all the salary information. So to the folks who do... where does the Cubs payroll now stand with the signings of Rusch, Perez, Eyre and Howry?
  24. Too much money. Way, way, way too much money.
  25. What big trade was that?? The Cubs had their hands tied.... I vaguely recall most hoping that the Cubs would be able to save some money dealing Sosa, so the Cubs could get Beltran or Drew. Also, there was hope that Floyd would be dealt for Sosa. Sosa just had no market appeal tho. Boy, did you just open a can of worms!
