  1. Would he be further along in his rehab if he had the surgery earlier? No doubt about it. But when you consider how many injuries the guy has racked up over the past couple of seasons, there should also be little doubt that Wood is going to be handled extremely carefully next April, even if by chance he is 100%.
  2. Actually, it's kind of sad that you all would make fun of a Cub fan--as anonymous to us as he may be--for his opinion on a Cubs player. I guess I'll apologize for him since he's not as "enlightened" as you all are.
  3. I understand the principle of the matter. But even if Wood had had his surgery July 1st, he would have been handled with kid gloves come April 2006. I'm certainly not arguing the decision to put him in the pen was a good one. I'm just saying that no matter when he had his surgery, Wood really wasn't going to be much of a factor in the rotation in April.
  4. I think too many people are getting their undies in a bind about Wood not being on the Openind Day roster. With all the off-days, a fifth starter is only needed twice. Maybe Baker lets that fifth starter start three times to keep guys somewhat rested. It's not that big a deal, really.
  5. A four team trade? Impossible! It is going to take a multi-team trade in order to bring the likes of Bobby Abreu to the Cubs. But how are you going to get Jeff Weaver to sign with the Phillies? Too bad sign-and-trade deals are not allowed.
  6. I have a long history of imploring people not to read too much into the printed quotes of Dusty Baker (especially), Jim Hendry, Andy MacPhail, etc., because it's just too hard to get an exact feel on what they're saying. A lot of times they say one thing but mean another. Or they'd rather not talk to the media but do so knowing they'd be ripped more for not saying something. Or quotes are imsinterpreted by reporters and used in an improper context. I'm making an exception this time. Baker sounded a lot like a guy prepared to play out his contract. I'm not going to fault him for not knowing how Felix Pie is playing in winter ball, but to not have good things to say about Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno, two guys who played for you and played well at that, is inexcusable. And while he's right the Cubs have a long history of not playing fundamentally sound baseball, three years as manager is more than enough time to correct it. Can't blame the past 97 years for what happened in 2005.
  7. ESPNews now reporting breaking news that AJ Burnett has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. No link yet, it's on the right side of the information bar at the bottom of the screen.
  8. And just how was he supposed to get Furcal to sign early? Pin him to the floor, shove a pen in his hand and force him to scribble his name on the dotted line? Furcal is not the first free agent to wait until a late suitor comes along with an offer he can't refus and he won't be the last. You point on Pierre is a little harder to argue, although once news of a player's availability gets out, other GM's swoop in with offers of their own, clouding up the picture. Your point on Perez is impossible to ignore.
  9. Do you guys honestly think Len Kasper is going to come on and say one way or another where Rafael Furcal is going to sign? He'd completely blow any confidence Jim Hendry has in keeping this kind of news under wraps. Not to mention jeopardize Furcal's decision. Is it still possible Kasper said what he did? Sure. But I doubt it was his intention to mention it to a fan, only to have it splattered all over a message board. It might just be the first and last time he ever shares any inside information.
  10. Five touchdowns, three field goals and eight safeties and UCLA is right back in this thing!
  11. More than likely it means the "Score" has been reading the Trib and it's a slow news day. They likely are re-reporting Rodger's column. ESPN 1000 is reporting that Rotoworld is reporting that the Score is reporting that Phil Rogers is reporting the Cubs may or may not have a deal to send Kerry Wood to Texas. We'll have more on this when we have more on this.
  12. Hey... five touchdowns, seven field goals and six safeties and Colorado is right back in this thing! That's what I like about college football--you never know!
  13. If it were any other team with a 2-9 record coming into Soldier Field, I'd be a little worried about a letdown. But it's the Packers. No worries about a letdown. And the Bear-Packer hatred runs both ways. I have a few friends who root for the Packers and in this season of turmoil they'd like nothing better than to beat up on the Bears. I know there's a "Bears Still Suck" song thats played over and over again, but is there a "Vikings Still Suck" song too?
  14. If he reads every post in this thread up to this one, he might just run away screaming--like me! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. I think the Cubs had to overspend a little to get Howry and Eyre. I look at it this way; who's going to spend more to get a car: the guy with no car or the guy driving a new Mercedes? The Cubs bullpen was atrocious in '05 and agents negotiating for relievers knew this.
  16. Thanks for the updates. I, too, think Patterson and Walker are goners. I think Hendry feels he needs to make a splash this offseason. And he's indicated he's willing to wheel and deal to make it happen. SHould make for an interesting winter meeting in a couple weeks.
  17. I don't keep up with all the salary information. So to the folks who do... where does the Cubs payroll now stand with the signings of Rusch, Perez, Eyre and Howry?
  18. Too much money. Way, way, way too much money.
  19. What big trade was that?? The Cubs had their hands tied.... I vaguely recall most hoping that the Cubs would be able to save some money dealing Sosa, so the Cubs could get Beltran or Drew. Also, there was hope that Floyd would be dealt for Sosa. Sosa just had no market appeal tho. Boy, did you just open a can of worms!
  20. You mean, like win? If this was a franchise, or even a management team, with a strong history of making the right moves to make a winning ballclub, I'd be able to have patience when thinking about what will happen with the Giles situation in particuliar, the RF position in general and the team overall. But this front office has no legs to stand on. Andy's regime has brought on many more losses than victories. It's there job to prove us wrong, not our responsibility to just assume they have everything under control. You may be taking my quotes a little out of context. Earlier, I chastised a poster for "hating" the Cubs based on speculation the team would not get into a bidding war for Brian Giles. Personally, I thought the comment was a little strong since it was based on one writer's opinion instead of a direct quote from someone in Cubs' management.
  21. Is there any way we can wait on the signing of Giles, wherever it may be, before we begin thumping the Cubs for their ineptitude? No. If you want to do that fine, refrain from posting. But why ask other to do it? If this is how you feel I'd suggest you avoid the whole transactions topic all together. That way you will not have to needlessly make such posts. EDIT: I don't know that anybody has ever said that Sullivan doesn't have information correct. What people have complianed about is his gossip mongering, and foolish ideas. But I think he is the mouth piece of the Chicago Cubs. I'll counter by saying it's totally unnecessary to make rash comments on something that hasn't happened yet. Why hate the Cubs for something they haven't even done? So I'll continue to make posts wherever and whenever I feel, thank you. Please feel free to scroll right past mine. And you may feel free to believe Paul Sullivan is the mouthpiece of the Cubs. But it's hilarious that you state that "people have complained about his gossip mongering" when that's exactly what he's doing when he talks about Brian Giles. Notice he's not quoting anyone in the Cub organization.
  22. I dislike how people claim a "hatred" for the Cubs after reading the opinion--and that's exactly what the quoted text is, opinion--of one baseball writer. And it's funny, too, because the consensus of this board is that Paul Sullivan doesn't know what he's talking about. Yet today he knows all when it comes to the pursuit of Brian Giles. Is there any way we can wait on the signing of Giles, wherever it may be, before we begin thumping the Cubs for their ineptitude?
  23. Pure posturing by Furcal's agent. He tosses center field into the equation just to drag the Yankees and their money into the mix. But face it, Furcal is the marquee name on the free agent list. He's going to sign for some serious coin wherever he goes.
  24. It's beyond not too interesting, it's painful to watch. ESPN sucks. I watched Phillips play Red Sox GM on Sunday and thought it was a little hokey. Then they showed a shot of "reporters" raising their hands and shouting out questions. Suddenly it wasn't hokey anymore. It went straight to stupid.
  25. Back in '85, I had the opportunity to do some construction work for Rick Sutcliffe. We began the work while the CUbs were 12 games into a horrendous 13 game losing streak. Bob Dernier and Jody Davis were in the hospital and the rotation was in shambles. The Cubs had an off-day, so in the morning Sutcliffe said he had some errands to run, but promised to bring us some "refreshments" at quitting time. Well, Sutcliffe delivered as promised, and Me, Sut and three other workers sat outside drinking beer and listening to Sutcliffe's Cub troubles. I won't go into details about what exactly he said, because he was not kind in his comments about a couple of teammates, but it would have made any reporter drool. Naturally, I hung on every word the man said. And a lot of what he told us that day about the future eventually came true later in the season. It's only one example, but I truly believe the players know more--a lot more--than they lead on. And they'd rather tell it to someone in a bar than someone holding a microphone in front of their face.
