  1. Baker and Clines by the All-Star break. The Cubs have two days off following the All-Star game. More than enough time to send those guys packing. Edited to add: Let's get a little more specific. The Cubs will have a press conference at 2PM CST on Wednesday, July 12th to announce the firings.
  2. Time to be a party pooper! No one in the Central is playing good baseball right now. If the Cubs could field a half-decent team, they (with respects to Marlon Brando) coulda been a contender. I guess as fans we'll have to take this week's win and be happy.
  3. I'm rooting for the nine year old National League All-Stars of the Lakeland Little League!
  4. I didn't catch all of the game on the tube today (I'll look at train wrecks, but I don't linger for too long). But what I did hear from Len and Bob was some fairly pointed criticism. They didn't single any one player out, but the pop up that dropped safely between Murton and Perez evoked a lot of anger. Len said, "Someone's gotta step up and make that play." Bob followed up with, "I don't think it's possible for a team to play any worse than the Cubs are right now." Yikes! Personally, I think they're spot on. And Bob doesn't sound like a guy who's campaigning for a managerial job with the Cubs, even if it is on an interim basis. I hope they don't go the way of Chip and Steve. I've grown to like their broadcasts.
  5. Let Baker have his excuses. What does it really matter? We know better (and I'm NOT being sarcastic). And most of the enlightened baseball world knows, too.
  6. Nope. Too much pride--not-to mention money--on the line for those two to dog it just because the Cubs are out of it.
  7. Even the Cubs went 5-4 in the first nine games after Derrek Lee went down.
  8. Not going to happen quite yet. Jim Hendry was not about to cave into the "Fire Dusty" crowd when the team went in the tank last month (although there is this perception in the media that the concept of firing Baker suddenly cropped up a few weeks ago). He said he wanted to see how things shake out as injured players return. Conversely, he's not going to announce an extension just because of a three game winning streak, even if it comes at the expense of the Cardinals in St. Louis. If a contract has already been hammered out between the two and the questions about Baker's status subside (and those questions will if the Cubs continue to have even a moderate amount of success), there's no reason to announce anything just yet.
  9. If we sweep the Cards I would be surprised if Hendry didn't extend Dusty on Monday. I doubt it. Just as Hendry didn't fire Baker when things went horribly wrong, I don't think he'll announce any extension just because of a Cardinal's sweep. It'll peobably come. But it's not going to look like a knee-jerk reaction to a short winning streak.
  10. All right... who kidnapped our Chicago Cubs and replaced them with these guy playing the Cardinals this afternoon?
  11. Keep asking that question, though. One of these years you're going to be right!
  12. Almost as labor-intensive as sneezing!
  13. I don't think Len and Bob much care for Perez. It seemed like they really wanted to lay into Perez in the first inning for not pulling the bat back on a fouled bunt attempt when Pierre tried to steal second.
  14. You know, I was wondering this when Baker pulled Zambrano. Could it be Baker is finally listening to his critics and is finally looking at pitch counts?
  15. If there was just one hole to fill, yes. But since the Cubs are baseball's equivalent to a colander, the answer is no.
  16. Actually, over the next two months I hope the Cubs do nothing. There are no moves Jim Hendry can make right now that would improve the club so much as to make it a contender. And that includes firing Dusty. I think the last thing this ballclub needs is an interim manager who suddenly gets the team to play .500 baseball and is rewarded with the position full-time. I think the Cubs should take the rest of the season to assess the health of Kerry Wood, Mark Prior and Wade Miller. See if Matt Murton can develop some power. See if there are any takers fo Jacque Jones, even though the Cubs will have to eat a substantial portion of his contract (I know he's hitting well and is not the problem, but I'm not comfortable watching him in a Cubs uniform through 2008). Own up to the mistake of the two year contract to Neifi Perez and just release the guy. Basically, play 2006 with an eye on 2007. Commonly known around here as "wait 'til next year."
  17. I really didn't have a problem with the Trbune Co. owning the Cubs, at least from a payroll standpoint. I've always been on the side of thise who have argued it's not how much money you spend, it's the way you spend it. But now I'd rather the Tribune Co. sell the Cubs. The events of the last 2-plus seasons has led me to believe this is a franchise that needs a fresh start from top to bottom--new owners, new GM, new manager, everything. Heck, let's change the head groundskeeper too, while we're at it. This team is playing bad baseball. Incredibly bad baseball. The organization needs a major shake-up.
  18. Can he play back-up SS? Anyone can play back-up SS better than Perez. Although my son is pretty good. Is he available to manage, or is school not out yet? Well, pretty much anyone can manage better than Dusty Baker. I don't know if my son is quite ready for that. Although he does understand walks are a good thing.
  19. Can he play back-up SS? Anyone can play back-up SS better than Perez. Although my son is pretty good.
  20. My son was in disbelief as he described Perez's bunt to end the game. He thought it was a pretty dumb play. My son is nine.
  21. Shhhhhh.... There is absolutely, positively no other way to interpret the quote. Every quote from now on is to be interpreted as a potshot at the Cubs. Every quote.
  22. Fred, you probably have a pretty good feel for how you and your stats are appreciated on this board. But I just have to remind you again. Love the stats. Keep up the amazing work!
  23. I think he can do it, but he's going to need SOME run support. But the 20-year plus Cub fan in me feels that a good performance will be counterbalanced by NO RUNS. Then Crusty will trot out Williamson (or someone else not named Howry, Eyre - is he still out?, or Dempster) after Greg is done for the day, and the Cards will get the sweep in their back yard this time. Ask, and ye shall receive. 0.99 ERA for Madux on the year, outstanding! And just after looking so flat the last couple of games, they string together some hits and make it look like everything's going to be all right. That is just so Cubs. Stringing us along in the process.
  24. Rick Monday saves the flag. Hard to believe it was 30 years ago. http://www.suntimes.com/output/deluca/cst-spt-deluca23.html I remember watching the game. Jack Brickhouse was speechless at first because he wasn't sure what was going on. WGN cameras didn't catch all of the incident because they, too, were surprised by what happened. Monday was pretty shaken up. And though it wasn't mentioned in this article, I remember him saying why he did what he did. He said something to the effect of, "I've seen too many veterans who lost limbs or suffered burns defending the flag. I just couldn't stand by and watch someone burn it. Pretty cool.
  25. Notice I did say "today" in my original post. It's just a feeling I got watching the game today. There was really no intensity, no fire from the ballclub. Actually, the only guy who had a little intensity, Todd Walker, was pulled in one of the stranger double-switches I've ever seen called. I honestly think they doubted their ability to come back in today's ballgame. They played all right until the Cards grabbed the lead. Then it was like they shut down. Again, just a feeling I got fron today's game.
