  1. Actually the Cubs having no All Stars would be appropriate, but the rules are the rules, they had to pick someone out of this mess. Head groundskeeper at Wrigley is having a heck of a year!
  2. Ever read a quote and think to yourself, "Boy is this going to get the posters at NSBB all riled up!" Scott Williamson apparently had this to say on the Score the other day: "They have their guys they like for certain reasons,'' Williamson told the Score. "I don't know why. They go to them, go to them, go to them. It's good to be that guy. If you mess up, you get back out there. But the bad part is if you're not one of their boys and he doesn't have confidence in you, then you wear it. "For me and some other people, we don't get opportunities to get in there and stay fresh and keep it going. It's been hard. If you are just one of the players on the outside, it's hard because you feel like you're under a microscope and walking on eggshells. If you have a bad outing, you don't feel like you're going to get back in there for a while. They've got a Bob Howry, so there's no need for me. Hopefully I do get traded. "I feel terrible for Murton. I feel a lot of stuff is not going the right way with him. This kid is going to be a superstar, a franchise player. He's a kid with a great work ethic. They didn't let him play and get his at-bats and fight through struggles.'' He later backed off these statements. Here's the whole story in today's Sun-Times: http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-cub03.html
  3. I really didn't like the plate appearance he had in the fifth (I think it was the fifth). He struck out, taking three big swings during the at-bat. Each time he was hacking away and putting a lot of torque on his back. Not necessary.
  4. Sell high. His value may never be higher than right now. He's hitting a little better now, too. Sell high, though you won't get much with his impending free agency. DFA'd by August 1 if there are no takers. Nope. I'd keep him. A goner. Wish it was sooner rather than later. Trade him for anything. ANYTHING! Give the poor guy a shot with a contender. Please. Can't do any worse.
  5. Morrissey nailed it. On a side note... Morrissey shows you can have a very strong and very negative view of a local sports team without being so inflammatory. Unlike his counterpart at the Sun-Times who shall remain nameless.
  6. And as long as people are wearing paper bags, they should sit silently with their arms crossed. They should only get up to use the bathrooms. And they shouldn't buy any concessions: no food, no drinks--even beer (did I just say that?), or souvenirs. Stand for the national anthem and the seventh inning stretch, but don't sing Take Me Out To The Ball Game. When you leave, put your paper bag on the seat back.
  7. Baker and Clines by the All-Star break. The Cubs have two days off following the All-Star game. More than enough time to send those guys packing. Edited to add: Let's get a little more specific. The Cubs will have a press conference at 2PM CST on Wednesday, July 12th to announce the firings.
  8. Time to be a party pooper! No one in the Central is playing good baseball right now. If the Cubs could field a half-decent team, they (with respects to Marlon Brando) coulda been a contender. I guess as fans we'll have to take this week's win and be happy.
  9. I'm rooting for the nine year old National League All-Stars of the Lakeland Little League!
  10. I didn't catch all of the game on the tube today (I'll look at train wrecks, but I don't linger for too long). But what I did hear from Len and Bob was some fairly pointed criticism. They didn't single any one player out, but the pop up that dropped safely between Murton and Perez evoked a lot of anger. Len said, "Someone's gotta step up and make that play." Bob followed up with, "I don't think it's possible for a team to play any worse than the Cubs are right now." Yikes! Personally, I think they're spot on. And Bob doesn't sound like a guy who's campaigning for a managerial job with the Cubs, even if it is on an interim basis. I hope they don't go the way of Chip and Steve. I've grown to like their broadcasts.
  11. Let Baker have his excuses. What does it really matter? We know better (and I'm NOT being sarcastic). And most of the enlightened baseball world knows, too.
  12. Nope. Too much pride--not-to mention money--on the line for those two to dog it just because the Cubs are out of it.
  13. Even the Cubs went 5-4 in the first nine games after Derrek Lee went down.
  14. Not going to happen quite yet. Jim Hendry was not about to cave into the "Fire Dusty" crowd when the team went in the tank last month (although there is this perception in the media that the concept of firing Baker suddenly cropped up a few weeks ago). He said he wanted to see how things shake out as injured players return. Conversely, he's not going to announce an extension just because of a three game winning streak, even if it comes at the expense of the Cardinals in St. Louis. If a contract has already been hammered out between the two and the questions about Baker's status subside (and those questions will if the Cubs continue to have even a moderate amount of success), there's no reason to announce anything just yet.
  15. If we sweep the Cards I would be surprised if Hendry didn't extend Dusty on Monday. I doubt it. Just as Hendry didn't fire Baker when things went horribly wrong, I don't think he'll announce any extension just because of a Cardinal's sweep. It'll peobably come. But it's not going to look like a knee-jerk reaction to a short winning streak.
  16. All right... who kidnapped our Chicago Cubs and replaced them with these guy playing the Cardinals this afternoon?
  17. Keep asking that question, though. One of these years you're going to be right!
  18. Almost as labor-intensive as sneezing!
  19. I don't think Len and Bob much care for Perez. It seemed like they really wanted to lay into Perez in the first inning for not pulling the bat back on a fouled bunt attempt when Pierre tried to steal second.
  20. You know, I was wondering this when Baker pulled Zambrano. Could it be Baker is finally listening to his critics and is finally looking at pitch counts?
  21. If there was just one hole to fill, yes. But since the Cubs are baseball's equivalent to a colander, the answer is no.
  22. Actually, over the next two months I hope the Cubs do nothing. There are no moves Jim Hendry can make right now that would improve the club so much as to make it a contender. And that includes firing Dusty. I think the last thing this ballclub needs is an interim manager who suddenly gets the team to play .500 baseball and is rewarded with the position full-time. I think the Cubs should take the rest of the season to assess the health of Kerry Wood, Mark Prior and Wade Miller. See if Matt Murton can develop some power. See if there are any takers fo Jacque Jones, even though the Cubs will have to eat a substantial portion of his contract (I know he's hitting well and is not the problem, but I'm not comfortable watching him in a Cubs uniform through 2008). Own up to the mistake of the two year contract to Neifi Perez and just release the guy. Basically, play 2006 with an eye on 2007. Commonly known around here as "wait 'til next year."
  23. I really didn't have a problem with the Trbune Co. owning the Cubs, at least from a payroll standpoint. I've always been on the side of thise who have argued it's not how much money you spend, it's the way you spend it. But now I'd rather the Tribune Co. sell the Cubs. The events of the last 2-plus seasons has led me to believe this is a franchise that needs a fresh start from top to bottom--new owners, new GM, new manager, everything. Heck, let's change the head groundskeeper too, while we're at it. This team is playing bad baseball. Incredibly bad baseball. The organization needs a major shake-up.
  24. Can he play back-up SS? Anyone can play back-up SS better than Perez. Although my son is pretty good. Is he available to manage, or is school not out yet? Well, pretty much anyone can manage better than Dusty Baker. I don't know if my son is quite ready for that. Although he does understand walks are a good thing.
  25. Can he play back-up SS? Anyone can play back-up SS better than Perez. Although my son is pretty good.
