  1. I think the Cubs go to 12 pitchers after today's game, so Piniella can get a little mileage out of Marmol and rest him for a few knowing he will have another arm in the pen.
  2. Somebody brought this up in another thread (and I have no idea which one) but under the proposed deal the Cubs would be paying all but the league minimum (or around that figure) while the Marlins would have picked up the rest. But the Cubs would still have to pay another player to take Jones' position on the roster. So essentially the player replacing Jones would have to make the league minimum for the Cubs to not take on any more salary than they would already have by keeping Jones. The player the cubs would most likely add when they remove jacque will most likely make the minimum. Not if the CUbs get Griffey!
  3. Which again begs the question, "Will the Cubs be allowed to DFA Jones?" The proposed trade to the Marlins was as close to DFA-ing Jones as it gets. Would Selig prevent the Cubs from cutting Jones to keep "incurring more debt for the new owner?" Can he?
  4. So does that mean the Cubs would not be allowed to DFA Jones? It would basically be the same thing as trading him, minus the Cubs getting some fringe prospect in return. Because no doubt Jones would be picked up after the ten day layoff and the CUbs still would have to pay him.
  5. For the next 26 hours, Jason Marquis is my hero!
  6. Well, if you're going to end a seven game winning streak, you might as well end it with a resounding thud. Did the Brewers ever go down 1-2-3 today?
  7. Do the Cubs still have a chance? Nope. I mean yes. Wait. No. Well, maybe. Probably not. But they could always..... Nah, it'll never happen. Gimme a week to think about it.
  8. Scott Eyre hadn't pitched in five days and had thrown 21 pitches before taking the mound in the bottom of the ninth. I know relievers like Eyre aren't used to taking the mound the way he was used this evening. But if you're working on five days rest and can't get the job done for 2.1 innings like Lou Piniella was hoping for out of Eyre, YOU'RE WORTHLESS! I honestly think Scott Eyre has pitched his last ballgame for the Cubs. And that'd be OK with me. I can't blame Piniella for this one.
  9. Don't make me chase you around!
  10. You're starting to sound like Hawk Harrelson. Cut it out! :D
  11. Hawk was probably thinking that play really deserved to be four outs with the Cubs having to bat in the top of the ninth with one out already. I think that's the first clip of him I ever enjoyed listening to.
  12. I don't think so. Pie was running towards 3rd, and he has not touched 3rd base when the interference occured. When it occured, the ball immediately becomes dead, and the runner stays at whichever base they are near by, I believe. By the time the interference occured, IIRC, Pie haven't touched 3rd yet. Of course, I could be wrong, but that's what I'd be guessing on how it was played out. I always understood it as obstruction awards you the base you are heading to. As the obstruction by Uribe happened after Pagan touched 2nd, he should be awarded 3rd, since he's awarded 3rd, Pie has to go home. As has been stated by others, Pie had not yet touched third, so it was probably ruled upon that Pagan can't advance to third since it was not yet occupied by the runner in front of him. Anyhow, I appreciated the fact the umpires huddled for as long as they did before making a ruling on the play. Four guys hashing out the rules are more likely to get it right.
  13. The link I posted on the first page of this thread is the ESPN article about Beck's stay in Iowa. A pretty cool guy who will be missed. He'd be a heckuva lot more fun to have on a show like Baseball Tonight than the stiff's ESPN props up on their set every night.
  14. I'm going to hoist a couple in his honor tonight after work. Here's a link to my all-time favorite article about The Shooter. SUmmed up the guy perfectly. http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/2003/0515/1554407.html
  15. Time to go on death watch.
  16. To play for Lou Piniella, who managed him in Seattle. To have a chance--albeit and outside one--to go to the playoffs.
  17. That's already been mentioned in this thread, and for Premium users, it's at the top of this page (page 8). Anyway, that theory certainly worked wonders for Barrett, who has not 1 but 2 promotional nights coming up. Oops. :) Sorry, a bit too lazy to grind my way though the previous nine pages of posts.
  18. TOTAL SPECULATION ALERT!!! I wonder if Griffey asked the Reds to hold off on a trade to the Cubs until after his series with Seattle. With all the festivities planned, it might be something he'd request. And with the Reds knowing they're already playing for next year and not this year, they might be willing to accomodate Griffey and hold off until after the series with the Mariners is over. Just a little speculation to keep the hopes of getting Ken Griffey Jr.
  19. I'd be very, VERY surprised if a reporter unmasked a "mole" in the clubhouse. It would make any other player leery about talking with that reporter, either on or off the record. Bet it's nothing more than the usual sports talk radio diarrhea.
  20. Just listen/watch Lou in a press conference. And and and a and a and over over again. Its pretty comical Piniella has a speech impediment. He stutters. He's actually gotten a better handle on it in recent years.
  21. After I made my initial post, I was going to edit it to add something to this effect. I think you nailed it!
  22. If Young makes that pitch at Soriano's head, he knows he's kicked out for sure and will probably have to sit by a phone awaiting a suspension call from Bud Selig. Especially in light of Jake Peavy's comments. But by throwing at Lee, Young has a chance to get away with it. If he just shuts his yap instead of jawing with Lee, he probably stays in the game with a warning issued to both benches (like what should have happened with Ted Lilly a week earlier). That's why he threw at Lee.
  23. Good thing he's leading off. Wouldn't want to waste any of those HRs by having guys on in front of him. By putting Izturis and the P right in front of him, we've virtually guaranteed that 90% of the HRs he hits will be solo shots. Well done, Cubs. Well done. Better solo HR than no HR at all. And better 2- or 3-run HR than solo. Soriano probably doesn't get those fat pitches with runners on base. Amazing that a guy hits three home runs and people still aren't happy. I'm not expecting everyone to start doing cartwheels and changing their first name to Alfonso, but geez... take a break from wetting on the charcoals for an evening, would ya?
