    I feel the same way. Just this morning, my wife said, "You're taking this all a lot better than I thought you would." And I think it's because I've finally resigned myself to the fact the White Sox are going to win the World Series. I'll give them credit for this. And maybe this sounds like sour grapes, but I will say this; The White Sox are about to win a championship playing in the weakest field of playoff contenders in a long, long time. There isn't a single team that made the playoffs this season--including the White Sox--who make you say, "Wow, they're a great baseball team." Don't get me wrong, no team is perfect. But it seems the other teams are finding ways to lose to the White Sox rather than the Sox are finding ways to win. After watching the first three games of this WS, I'm still trying to figure out how Houston made it.

    The TV deals aren't that big a deal. There are basically two start times for home games: 1:20 and 7:05, with an occasional 2:20 start time on Friday afternoons. The other start times accomodate nationally televised games on Fox and ESPN, which the Cubs have almost no control over. I don't think having the games on several different local channels is a big deal, either. You may have to surf a little bit to find them on TV, but most people will make the effort to see their team. Having some games telecast on Comcast has actually helped bring in extra revenue. WGN really doesn't have to bid on games, since the superstation and the team are both owned by the Tribune Co. So there is money coming in from an outside source.

    Interesting take. I've been coaching 8-9 year olds in a Cal Ripken league. I've actually used Jeff Bagwell and Moises Alou as examples on their footwork. I've been keeping them away from the big leg kick because 1) they don't have the time for a big leg kick to stay with the faster pitchers in the league, 2) they have a tendency to bail out when they do stride and 3) they move their heads too much with a big stride, thus taking their eyes off the ball. At this point, we're just stressing making contact with the ball. At their age, if they can just put the ball in play, anything can happen. Plus, I'd rather have the kids get into good habits now rather than try to break bad habits later. Slightly off-topic: any good baseball coaching forums and websites out there in cyberspace? I haven't done much surfing on the subject myself.

    Here's the problem with White Sox fans: On WBBM-AM, a reporter grabbed a soundbite from a Sox fan shortly after the team took a two games to one lead over the Angels. Rather than talk about how well the team played that night, the fan chose to take a swipe at the Cubs and how they fared in the playoffs in 2003. It's hard to root for a team whose fans act like that.

    Give the White Sox credit for taking advantage of the extra out. But that call will always be a black mark against the White Sox for the rest of this series. I hope the umpires bend over backwards to make it up to the Angels. This just came to mind; anyone remember the first "Police Squad" movie? Leslie Nielsen was the home plate umpire and had to do everything in his power to keep the game from going into the bottom of the seventh or else the Queen of England would die. So he was calling guys safe when they were obviously out trying to extend the inning. He even got into a shoving match with another umpire to keep from calling a third out. The movie was the beginning--and end--of Reggie Jackson's movie career. Hilarious. I'm looking for a similar scene from the umpires Friday night to make amends to the Angels.

    We'll probably be seeing more stories about the quarterback controversy at North Passaic High school and extensive coverage of the Pop Warner championship game in Worscester, Mass. to keep their East Coast audience happy.

    I see what you're saying about the re-treads, but there is some merit to having an ex-player manage. My business is crawling with creepy consultants. Many have not spent any time at all in my shoes. Yet they think they know how to do my job. Now I don't completely dismiss their suggestions. But I've been doing what I'm doing now for 14 years. And I've done pretty well for myself. I have a fairly good idea of what works and what doesn't. And it is hard to take orders from someone who has no clue about my job and how it's done. I think the same principle applies to managers. Players want to hear from a guy who's "been there, done that." They don't want to listen to someone who hasn't walked in their shoes.

    IIRC, Thome signed for $15/year for 6 years, but was prepared to go as low as $12/year for 6 years with the Cubs. Do you think that would have made for a good contract for the Cubs now? I don't.

    Same here. It's getting difficult just tuning into a Chicago newscast or picking up a newspaper. Way too much White Sox stuff. The sooner they go away the better. White Sox against the Cardinals in the World Series. A glimpse of life in hell.

    A good signing. Price is right and so is the length of the contract. With so many other positions to address, it's going to help Hendry a lot going into the offseason. One less position to focus on.

    Newsradio 780, WBBM in Chicago sent a reporter to US Cellular Field to get a story on White Sox fans celebrating their division championship. The reporter talked to one guy leading the chants, a Sox fan named Marvin. The funny part? He was the only guy to show up there to celebrate!

    From a Cubs' perspective, there's been very little to root for this year. So it's been fun to watch the Indians play so well. Especially the way their kids have been producing. This collapse would surpass the Cubs' choke job of '69.

    I think the Cubs feel like they know who they have in Rich Hill. Another 4-5 starts in September isn't going to change their projection. But it might change the minds of trade partners if he doesn't pitch well. I do think prospects lose value a lot faster than they gain it. A lot faster. And while Hill might not have a whole lot of value right now, a little is better than none at all. As you know, you can have all the talent in the world, but that doesn't necessarily translate into success at the major league level. I do think prospects lose value a lot faster than they gain it. And I tend to believe other teams don't know the value of Hill as well as the Cubs do. But if you still want to believe other teams know Hill as good as the Cubs, you won't get an argument from me.

    Here's a possibility: Rich Hill as trade bait in the off-season. Hill's name has been tossed around on numerous occasions. He's looked great in AAA, good at times with the Cubs. Why hurt his trade value by allowing him to get shelled a time or two? I think the Cubs feel like they know who they have in Rich Hill.
