    I think Dusty Baker is just being diplomatic. Matt Lawton is under a lot of pressure. He's expected to be the spark plug for an inconsistent offense that still has playoff aspirations. It wouldn't do Lawton any good to have Baker point that out to the media. Better to keep it low-key.

    I haven't seen Ryne Sandberg's speech in full, only excerpts in this morning's columns. He may have had Sammy Sosa in mind when he talked about today's generation of players, but only to get his point across that players need to respect the game. It's all about respect. My son is eight years old and is learning to play baseball. In a little league game a few weeks ago, playing shortstop, he made a leaping grab of a line drive. It wasn't the kind of catch you see eight year olds make every day. But what impressed me more than the catch was the way he tossed the ball to the umpire and jogged back to the bench like he'd made that play a thousand times before. I made it a point to tell him how reacted after the catch was just as important as the catch itself. Can't begin to tell you how proud I was. I need to get a copy of the speech and watch it with him. After all, his name is Ryne, too.

    It's probably been said by another poster, but I'll mention it again. Jim Hendry traded a bench player for a regular and even squeezed a little cash out of the cash-strapped Pirates. Not bad.

    Griffey is a guy who would make it through waivers, because of his large contract. I sure would love to see the Cubs get him, however, I think the Cubs are done with deals for the season. Griffey could get through waivers, but could the players being sent to Cincy get through? The old PTBNL could cover that little speedbump. Oooh Oooh...wait, thats true. But, wouldnt the player still have to clear waivers whenever he is announced? Good question. But Cincy could certainly wait until the offseason to make the selection. The Reds would likely be seeking prospects. They need help next season, not now.

    Didn't have to give up much to get him. Not the blockbuster we were looking for. Wonder what the reaction is going to be in the clubhouse? P.S. What's the record for most members on at one time?

    Anyone think Jim Tracy may be on the way out? The Dodgers thus far have been underwhelming in a very weak NL West, although they have been bitten by the injury bug. Still, the thought of Dusty Baker in Dodger blue might be enough for management to take a pass on Tracy's 2006 option.

    I'd be a little disappointed. I certainly don't want Jim Hendry to make a trade for the sake of making a trade--I really don't think he'll do that. But because he's pulled something off the last two seasons, for him to stand pat right now when the Cubs have a decent chance of making the post-season would disappoint me. How would you feel? Just a little discussion to pass the time while the seconds tick away...

    Why don't we just trade Dusty for Tracy and call it good? Nevermind that: how about Dusty for Sgt. Pornstache, straight up? :wink: I'd do Dusty for Edwin Jackson. In 1979, Oakland traded manager Chuck Tanner to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Manny Sanguillen and 100K. So there is a precedent. Oh, and Tanner guided the Bucs to a World Series championship later that year. There's even more precedent than that. I believe Randy Winn was traded for Lou Piniella, and the NFL Buc's got a lot of money and draft picks just to interview Jon Gruden. October 28, 2002: Lou Piniella is named manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Mariners send SS Antonio Perez to Tampa Bay for OF Randy Winn as part of the compensation package. Forgot about that one. Good call.

    If the Cubs lose the wild card race by one game, it will not be because Dusty Baker gave Derrek Lee a day off on Sunday. Plus, it seems as though the rest of the team steps up a little bit when one of the regulars is out of the line-up. The Cubs reeled off seven straight wins after Mark Prior was nailed by a line drive. They started a five game winning streak in Florida with Lee on the bench. You can even toss in last Wednesday's game when0 Aramis Ramirez sat to rest his ailing leg.

    The Seattle Mariners have traded outfielder Randy Winn to the San Francisco Giants for catcher Yorvit Torrealba and pitcher Jesse Foppert. AP story. No link yet.

    Except for the occasional update, it seems as though Corey Patterson has fallen off the planet. Jim Hendry and Dusty Baker have been talking a lot about getting Kerry Wood, Nomar Garciaparra and Scott Williamson on the 25-man, but there's been no mention at all about Patterson. Corey, it seems, has fallen very, very far.

    You because you're "in the know." I should change my screen name. I was "in the know" a few years back with a good friend who worked behind the scenes with the Cubs. Then he took another job. He's not as good a friend as he used to be.

    What are you monitoring to keep tabs on deadline deals (aside from refreshing the NSBB Transaction page every minute, or course)? I have an AP sports wire that updates ever time a new bulletin is sent.

    Manny Ramirez cited "privacy issues" when he asked to be traded. So life would be better playing in New York?

    The team really is beginning to come together. Len Kasper and Bob Brenly were pointing out during the ninth inning how many guys were grabbing bats and putting their batting gloves on in hopes of contributing to the comeback effort. "All hands on deck," to quote Brenly. But chemistry is one thing, performance is another. You'd think Wednesday's come from behind victory against the Giants would be that watershed game marking the start of a prolonged winning streak. Yet they go out and stink up Wrigley the next day against the D-backs. I've said it before and other posters have been saying it for months, too. This team is consistently inconsistent. Edited to add: I will say that this team and the guys on it are a lot easier to root for than last year's squad. It was hard rooting for Sosa, Alou, Mercker and Farnsworth for a variety of reasons.

    He got Burnitz pretty good during a post-game interview with CSC. Problem is, he's going to be looking over his shoulder every time he's up for an interview. He dishes it out pretty good. I have a feeling pretty soon we're going to see how well he can take it.

    This upcoming offseason will be the biggest test of all for Jim Hendry. The only contract he acquired when he took the job (Sammy Sosa's) will be completely off the books. All the players in 2006 will be guys Hendry traded for or re-signed.

    When he traded for Aramis Ramirez two years ago, Hendry traded for a guy he felt could stay in the organization beyond 2003. When he traded for Nomar Garciaparra last year, Hendry traded for a guy he felt he could re-sign and keep for longer than just 2004. If Hendry makes a trade, it'll be for a guy who can help out not only this year but next year, too. I think Adam Dunn is not a guy whom the Cubs can easily keep beyond this year, so I think the odds are against the Cubs getting him.

    This thread defines the phrase "guarded optimism." I was at today's game. Everyone was excited about today's win. Yet everyone also wondered which team is going to show up tomorrow. I'd love to think we have a great shot at keeping this winning streak alive. But this is the 2005 Cubs we're talking about. They're still very capable of losing four in a row. They're too consistently inconsistent.

    I recall a few years ago the same wild speculation when Donald Trump sang the seventh inning stretch. And I think the Sun-Times started it all then, too. I don't necessarily think it's going to happen.     I'd bat Nomar in the seven hole. You know he's only going to get four starts per week as he's eased into an everyday role. This way he and Perez (and you just know it's going to be Neifi and not Cedeno) can be interchangeable in the lineup without having to juggle everyone else.
