    I watched the Packers/Lions game. The Bears are not beating either of those teams. Both play fundamentally better and seem to have a plan from the start of the game that works.

There are no stats that measure “fire”, “spark”, “edge” , “leadership” etc. You can’t derive those things by looking at a chart telling you an outfielder’s route efficiency or a 2B’s hard hit rate. There is a place for those and other metrics and the PhD mathematician analyzing them in a windowless room somewhere in bowels of Wrigley, but you need scouts to help you understand the qualitative side of players and prospects. The Cubs are a premier franchise - they should be able to afford fully staffed talent evaluation departments on both the quant side and on the more qualitative scouting side. This is what is so frustrating about this franchise - the consistent desire to run it at optimal organizational efficiency rather than for optimal on field results.

Reading between the lines, Jed's job appears to be relatively safe and their goal is to become the Cleveland Guardians, kind of.

    You can substitute any non-Cheifs team who consistently wins if you like.

    LOL, you brought up two of the best QBs and probably the best QB of all time in an argument that coaching doesn't matter. Well, yes, with those three it probably doesn't matter.

    They are also outliers you are trying to make a point with. When the Bears have a no-doubt hall of fame QB or any number of other teams who seem to win (Steelers) without them you may have a point. Obviously, you tend to go to poles on stuff like this. And it's not black and white. Coaching matters and it matters more when guys break into the league. It's not chicken or egg.

    You mention outliers like they prove something. Manning and Rodgers didn't win anything, and Brady's team won on defense. You can compensate all you want but it doesn't change the game.

    I am really at a loss about what the Cubs should do. They should not run out a similar team to the one on the field the last two years. I haven't a clue how to accomplish it.

    Whether Kyle wants to admit it or not, it's the coaching. The NFL's talent level is bunched up around the mean. The Curve is steep, and the standard deviation is narrow. Coaching is more important than in any other sport. I don't think they will be making any changes.

    Strengthening a strength is a good strategy in baseball as long as the best players get the most opportunities. We know how often Suzuki gets hurt.

    His tactics usually work to get his guys the best contract. They didn't last year. At the end of the day, it's still up to the player. They choose Boras for a reason.

    I don't put any stock in the horsefeathers. But don't you think if the Cubs know he's defensively challenged other teams will know it too? It seems it would depress his value as a trade opportunity. Also and for horsefeathers sake, let's give the guy a minute to improve.
