Mr. Miles, It is my impression that Hairston is not well liked by Dusty. He made a number of comments about him missing signs and base running gaffes. Is this the case?

You seem to keep forgeting there are other teams in the divison and the rest of the national league besides the Cardinals and Astros.

Based on what? If you say something like that they might be terrible (reversepsychology). Who knows when Wood will be ready to go, and when he is who know how long before he is good again. All indications are that Neifie will be starting at 2nd-He had a career year last year and still was less than mediocre The outfiled was god awful last year, this year it might be merely pathetic. The bullpen might be better but Eyre and Howry are middle inning guys for a reason. Who knows what will happen in the bullpen. Dempster's high wire act might not play this year. Lee is likely to regress. I'd say the Cubs have a chance at 90 wins, but that chance is not good.

mmm....moldy cake. :lol: This shouldn't come as a surprise. Hendry recently talked about how Hairston, Neifi, and Cedeno were all viable options at 2nd base. He made no mention of Walker what-so-ever. Walker must have slept with Dusty's wife or something because I really don't understand why he's fallen from graces so quickly. And just to add a little insult to injury Hendry picked up Walker's option. I have to think Hendry is planning on trading him. I just hope it is not for PTBL. -

I really hope that Hendry swings the Tejada deal. Then when the board erupts in praise for the move all the people who complain that we do nothing but bash Hendry will stand down. In addition, the pickup will be huge for the Cubs in 2006. They might actually be able to get by with the power outage in the outfield.

This is a message board. When Hendry signed Nomar people were happy. When Hendry got Barrett people were happy. When Hendry traded Sosa people were happy. When Hendry signed Burnitz people where unhappy. It is completly unreasonable for people to be happy about Jones given his career arc, the Cubs payroll, and need. A little optimism does go a long way. Blindness however, only gets one to walk into walls over and over again. Being unhappy about the way the offseason has gone is one thing, but the level of melodramatic overreaction and blanket criticism in recent weeks has been ridiculous. Sure Jones sucks, and it is disappointing we didn't do better. Hendry has done a poor job, and I think we could do better than him, too. The upcoming season is going to be harder than it needed to be. But people are dismissing even the hint of optimism as lunacy and declaring Hendry the antichrist and the 2006 season as dead already. It's just silly. It's like mob panic. The answer is simple then. Instead of complaining don't open or read any thread that contains things you don't like. No one is making you open a thread or read a post.

I am beside myself with grief. I don't know what to say other than I hope people hold Hendry's feet to the fire at the Cubs convention. I need another hobby in the winter.

That is not the case BABIP is independent of strikeouts Think of it this way. There are two types of outs: Ones where no contact is made (strikeout) Ones where contact is made. (ball batted in play) The only ones that hinder BABIP are the ones where contact is made. Let's say I have 600 ABs in a year I could stike out 599 times and still have a BABIP of 1.000. ------ BTW here is to hoping Hendry gets lightning in a bottle with JJ.

Who here is excercising sensorship? You've been here just has long as I have so I would think you are respected poster. I really don't understand the hang up you have about post counts? The free exchange of ideas means people may disagree. What is the problem?

THE POINT was that nobody thought the Astros were going anywhere in 2004 either. year after year there are teams far less talented than the 2005 Chicago Cubs that come out of nowhere. The 2004 Astros and the 2005 Cubs are only comparable in the sense that they play in the same division. Woody pitching 1 inning every third game was not going to get that team anywhere. In August of 2004 Beltran was just comming on line and the Astros were getting healthy at the right time. However, they still wouldn't have made it if the Cubs wouldn't have choked against the Mets and Reds. You can make a point all you want and you can argue with anyone but you shouldn't expect people to agree with you. It is an absurd arguement.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. Innocent mistake, but the listed standings for wild card are for 2004, not 2005. :D He is completely off base, IMO. The Cubs were going nowhere last year when they expiremented with Woody in the pen. The dude just loves to argue.

If Hendry lands Abreu or Tejada (for Hill or Guzman + Williams+ prospect) the only people ripping Hendry will be the village contrarians who feel the need to play martyr.

There is no such thing as a "throw in" in the age of the internet. I can look up stats for any player in any league and I'm not even remotly related to anyone who is payed to do that kind of a job. It is not unreasonable to assume that Florida knew they were getting an athletic lefty with very good velocity and decent secondary pitches who has a pitching motion that is deceptive but hard to repeat. With that windup it was no sure thing that he would be this good, but given the fact that he is left handed and has put up good numbers at every level it is not that hard to project he would make it to the bigs.
