Pierre's career numbers are skewed because he played in Colorado. That's why I used OPS+ numbers, which reflect park factors. Pierre performed pretty much as last year as he's performed (on average) for his career. "Three year averages" are good, but they're not everything. Like I said, I wouldn't be surprised if Pierre is as good as Eckstein, but to imply that it's a "no brainer" that he'll probably be better is blind reasoning, in my opinion. Pierre's numbers are hardley affected by playing in Coors field. That is a good one. He is a slap hitter. He rarely hits triples even in Pro Player and Coors. I wish Slappy wasn't on the Cubs but I'd take him over ADHD boy any day as a leadoff hitter.

Look at the upper 1/3 of Patterson's graph. Not only is he well below league average at hitting the ball, but that is where he strikes out frequently. I like these graphs.

If the rumors are true about Hildalgo either Branyan then the outfiled depth suddenly would become pretty decent. If the Cubs get both then they can say goodbye to the ancient and arthritic Grissim. Murton, Slappy, Jones, Marby, Branyan/Hildalgo If it were me I'd take Branyan.

I disagree. I think that a number of long relief appearences by a young pitcher can serve as a good opportunity for evaluating whether or not that pitcher can be an asset in the rotation. Why not put the guy in the rotation to evaluate him? I guess that would be too simple. If that's the chief evaluation tool one would use, then a guy like Rich Hill would be given up on. I'm not even close to giving up on him. Hill has hardley been given enough opportunities to write off. But Hill is also a good example of how usage patterns can hurt a young player.

Hidalgo would be a very good bench option and plays very good defense. He would make a great 4th outfielder.

Do we really have excellent instructors? I'm probably one of the minor league instructors biggest critics. It's getting real old hearing how good so and so is yet seeing guys not reaching their potential. Guys like Choi, Hill, Kelton, Dubois Jackson, etc. I'm still seeing nothing really extraordinary from Harvey. So, our instructors are considered excellent based on.....? I was under the impression that the DJAXX had really good coaches. I think they do. Why doesn't the talent in the minors translate in the bigs? I think there are several reasons. Most are not under the organization's control, but some are. For example, I don't think it does much good to platoon a player until he demonstrates he cannot produce. Yet the Cubs want to platoon young guys. I don't think it does much good for a guy who is use to playing every day and sit them on the bench only to give them infrequent starts and pinch hits (Choi, Dubios, Hill) . It doesn't help a guy to yo-yo him from the big club to the minors, especially a pitcher who might go from starter in AAA to reliver in the bigs (Cruz, Z, Hill, Farns, etc). It doesn't help a young player by batting him in the 1 spot for a month then 2 then 6 then 7th then back to 1 (Patterson),

I think they'd like to win the WS, but they've said over and over that their plan was to build a team to contend within the division (or similar phrases). They've never shown any desire to build a dominant team, rather one that could enjoy some success if everything works out right. It's called the "goodenough" philosphy and it will work on occasion, 1998 and 2003 ,but is not a way for a big money organization to build a championship calibur team. I rank your "goodenough" myth right up there with the myth that Cardinal fans are the most knowledgeable in baseball. It's not a myth it is a philosophy esposued by Jim Hendry. Every year he says something to the effect of, "Well, I think we are good enough to compete within the division". Don't believe me? You can look it up.

Good luck trading up into the top 5. New Orleans should trade down. No top pick will want to sign him them. If they sign Young they better put him at wide reciever or get the best QB coach they can find b/c right now he is not pro QB material. He is the most overhyped QB to come out since Lief. Different game but same QB talent.

That is the genius that is the Cubs marketing and leadership. Have a 79 win season. Then when you have a high 80s win season call it an improvement. Hendry gets credit for improving a team that he created while the team that he created last year is used as the baseline from which to measure, brilliant!

To me he sounds correct not bitter. JH has upgraded the team on paper. But how much? Not much if you ask me. Pierre is an upgrade, but a slight upgrade Jones is not an upgrade We don't know what we will get from Murton, but probably not enough power numbers to make a difference Cedeno will hit but not walk much Walker will never make it out of ST JH Jr and Neifie will split time at 2nd. Lee will likely regress Will Aramis be healthy all year? The starting pitching remains a question mark with Wood on the shelf The bullpen is upgraded, at least on paper. Bullpens are one of the hardest ascpects of a team to upgrade given the volitile nature of the bullpen from year to year.. Overall, I'd say about a .500 club. Certianly not what I was hoping for.

Any details? Pure hopefull speculation: Big Z wanted to go for long term security and Boras wanted to go for short run profit. Pure pessimistic speculation: Big Z thinks he is worth more than Boras was going to offer in arbitration. -
