  1. Sosa is a convicted cheater "cork". McGwire is not. As far as McGwire being "one-dimensional", I believe he's won one more Gold Glove than Sosa has, and his career OPS+ is 34 points higher than Sosa, and his career on-base-percentage (not a power stat) is 50 points higher than Sosa. McGwire was no more one-dimensional than Sosa. I am not a mod but I have had enough of your trolling on this board. IMO, It is time for you to go. This whole thread is about McGuire not Sosa.
  2. We have Ryan Sandberg days left until pitchers and catchers report.
  3. I love the excrement covered Cardinal Hats. Funny, funny stuff. You need to edit the topic b/c I would vote all the above.
  4. How many 4+ ERA starters do the Cubs need? If they sign Weaver it is a sign that Wood is worse then they are letting on.
  5. Welcome. Eric Milton and any number of other soft-tossing lefties would disagree
  6. twenty-four 24 starts now
  7. Exactly how is "clubhouse" measured? Last year Neifi was 9th out of 11 qualified SS in OPS. He has a .681 OPS for his career. In short, his OPS sucks. He should not be an every day player and he should not be making 2.5 mill/year.
  8. I would just like to point out the one thing that all 58 posts in this thread have in common. No one has said they hate Neifie. However, Vance is reserving judgement untill and unless he gets Niefie's autograph. Can we stop with the hysterics then?
  9. There are plenty of Neifie is a crappy player shields to hide behind. OBP is but one. How about batting average, walks, hit into DPs, SLG, or VORP. Those are only a sample of other shields. In fact I could make a fortress of crappy stats to hide behind when it comes to Perez. Many teams that won have had crappy short stops. That does not mean that it is a formula on which to rely or even a good idea. Bottom line, Neifie is one of the worst offensive short stops to play on a regular basis in the past 20 years.
  10. I hope that Hendry recognizes that Soriano is overpaid. Soriano Career, age 30(ish) 280/320/500 Salary @ 10 miil/year Walker Career, age 32 290/348/441 Salary 2.5 mill/year no brainer. Now if Hendry trades Walker and uses Neife/Hairston I hope Hairston demonstrates he is clearly better then Perez or the Cubs will be in trouble at 2nd.
  11. Has anyone in this thread said that they hate Neifie? People have siad they hate the way Neifie has been employed by the managment of the Cubs. That is all most people ever say. Come down off the box.
  12. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I don't like that Hendry gave him a substantial raise and signed him to multi-years. I don't like the fact that Dusty has said that, "Perez saved" the Cubs. I don't like the fact that he played over Cedeno when the Cubs were out last year. I also don't particularly care that he may be the starting SS or 2nd baseman over either Cedeno or Walker. He is not an everyday player. However, I don't think "People" whoever they are, hate Neifie. What I do think is that "people" who disagree with other posters' opinons shouldn't sterotype.
  13. We must be looking at different upper thirds then, because on the graph I am looking at he is just about league average if not slightly above in most of the upper third. The only box that matters is the one right in the middle. That is the strike zone.
  14. And he will be in Cubbie blue for three, count em', three more years. Whoopie! :sunny: :jive:
  15. Pierre's career numbers are skewed because he played in Colorado. That's why I used OPS+ numbers, which reflect park factors. Pierre performed pretty much as last year as he's performed (on average) for his career. "Three year averages" are good, but they're not everything. Like I said, I wouldn't be surprised if Pierre is as good as Eckstein, but to imply that it's a "no brainer" that he'll probably be better is blind reasoning, in my opinion. Pierre's numbers are hardley affected by playing in Coors field. That is a good one. He is a slap hitter. He rarely hits triples even in Pro Player and Coors. I wish Slappy wasn't on the Cubs but I'd take him over ADHD boy any day as a leadoff hitter.
  16. Look at the upper 1/3 of Patterson's graph. Not only is he well below league average at hitting the ball, but that is where he strikes out frequently. I like these graphs.
  17. If the rumors are true about Hildalgo either Branyan then the outfiled depth suddenly would become pretty decent. If the Cubs get both then they can say goodbye to the ancient and arthritic Grissim. Murton, Slappy, Jones, Marby, Branyan/Hildalgo If it were me I'd take Branyan.
  18. You'll still do the minor league stuff though, right?
  19. update 1/19/06 under a month now!
  20. I disagree. I think that a number of long relief appearences by a young pitcher can serve as a good opportunity for evaluating whether or not that pitcher can be an asset in the rotation. Why not put the guy in the rotation to evaluate him? I guess that would be too simple. If that's the chief evaluation tool one would use, then a guy like Rich Hill would be given up on. I'm not even close to giving up on him. Hill has hardley been given enough opportunities to write off. But Hill is also a good example of how usage patterns can hurt a young player.
  21. Hidalgo would be a very good bench option and plays very good defense. He would make a great 4th outfielder.
