  1. The Twins won back-to-back-to-back division titles in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and in each of those seasons, Guzman, Jones and Rivas had 1,500 combined at bats. All I'm trying to say is that if the Cubs pitching staff remains healthy, and the re-vampled bullpen is productive, the Cubs are going to be fine. All that remains to be seen Hoops. But the Twins weren't in a division with St. Louis, Houston and an improving Millwaukee. If the Cubs don't make another major deal I am predicting 4th place. On the bright side, that will likely mean Hendry and Baker are fired.
  2. Great idea, except for the fact that Floyd and Heilman are each worth more on their own than Soriano. Maybe to you, but not to virtually every GM in baseball. There are very few 2nd baseman with the offensive production of Soriono.
  3. So is the thought, there is average then sucky? Again, someone would have to define what situations would qualify as clucth situations. Then the performance would have to significantly varry from the norm (probably as much as two standard deviations) for anti-clutch to have any relevance. It would be an interesting study, I wager one might find a very, very small number of anti-clutch players if any at all.
  4. If there is such a thing as momentum in sports I would think it would player a larger role in the timed sports like football, baskettball, and socer then in baseball. Interestingly enough, there is a phenomenon known as behavioral momentum. It deals with inducing a low probabliltiy response to occur by interspersng it with high probability responses. Here is one to try on your friends that is kind of related to behaivoral momentum. you have to say this in a rapid fire fashion How do you spell roast How do you spell most How do you spell boast What do you put in a toaster 9 times out of 10 they will say toast. You put bread in a toaster
  5. Check this out: http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=119987 "According to sources, at least two teams have offered the Orioles a more attractive package than the current Ramirez and Clement offer the Red Sox have been dangling." Ramirez and Clement sounded pretty attractive. What 2 teams topped that, and with which players? Is it possible Detroit offer Guillen, Bonderman and a prospect? I cannot see Tejada being happy in Detriot.

    Wood

Not to me. I am a Wood detractor becuase he hasn't learned to be a pitcher yet. He is still a thrower. He has yet to learn to control the strike zone and seems to lose concentration at times. IMO, all this leads to arm and shoulder troubles.
  7. Craig, In order for data to support your hypothesis there would have to be enough observations. In order to do that one would have to define clutch. Using the most liberal terms one could say: two outs with a runner in scoring postion. It wouldn't matter what inning or which game. Then the performance would have to be significantly worse or better then the player's performance in non clutch situations (probably at least two standard deviations from the mean for that player). Given these assumptions I would be willing to wager that data to support the existence of anti-clutch or clutch would be difficlut if not impossible to find
  8. Dayn can't even spell his name correctly. The guy is a friggen moran. Punishing Rice for playing his career in Boston? Then he talks about home road splits? They guy was the premier power hitter of his generation. For an 8 year stretch Rice was the most feared hitter in the AL. If I ever see Daynny boy on the street I'd treat him to a knuckle sam'ich.
  9. IMO, that's a perfect comparison in terms of skill set. And yes, Andre's career was watered down by playing on the rug in Olympic Stadium. Although Dawson's career was undoubtably hurt by playing in Olympic Stadium, he was damaged goods even before he stepped on to a MLB filed. In highschool he destroyed his knee playing football his senior year. To me that makes his career even more remarkable. I will always love the Hawk. If I had a boy I would want him to emulate they way he played the game. One more thing, nobody could hit the head high fastball harder and farther than Dawson.
  10. as much as it pains me to say it: joe morgan was the superior player that set the offensive standard for all modern 2nd basemen to be judged. That's the thing that is so shocking. He is a sabermatrician's wet dream. Yet, he still preaches old fashioned baseball. How Ironic.
  11. JP is cleaning house. All of the old-school "tool" guys are gone. If Hendry manages to get an extension it will be interesting to see the path the two organizations take. My money is on Toronto.
  12. it has to do with trends. i wouldn't necessarily agree that soriano will never return to his career norms, but i think he needs to improve his plate discipline over anything. i wouldn't care that he's a butcher in the field if he got on base. this is a stat that he's never had, and i don't want him if he doesn't show improvement anyway. 2001 .304, 2002 .332, 2003 .338, 2004 .324, 2005 .309. There is a TWO-year trend down. I don't find two-year trends very significant w/out any attached reason for such a trend. On September 3rd of last year Soriano was at .321 for his OBP. If he can do it for 5 months he can do it for 6. His "trend" isn't really much of a concern for me. If you want to get a grasp on his OBP you are going to have to look at his BA becuase his high in walks was 38 in 03. Since 2002 (approximately the second half of his career) his batting average has dropped EVERY YEAR from a high of .300 to .268 last year. Keep in mind too, that he played 80 games in a hitters heaven. Add on to the fact that he will make 10 mill and he is radioactive.
  13. Yeah, and his last good year against lefties was 2004. The last time before that was 2003. The last time before that was 2002... and so on. Grissom is a horrible player at this point in his life. Horrible meaning really, really bad. He has no business on the Cubs. I refuse to believe that this signing is anything more than a favor to him from Dusty. The signing is so he can show he can still play. He will sign with a low payroll team after the Cubs cut him. If he is on the Cubs come April I will be more than shocked.
  14. More than likely? I'd say he's a clear-cut favorite to make the Cubs. There's a slight chance ST would be an audition for another team, but I can't see it as "more than likely". We shall see. To me he is at best a 5th outfielder. Peirre Jones Murton Patterson Marbury Hairston Grissom If the Cubs the Cubs get rid of Patterson, slide everyone up. He still won't make the team. Teams do this kind of stuff every year. Once Walker is traded, Hairston will be considered an IF. Corey will likely be gone as well. That leaves Pierre, Jones, Murton, Mabry and Grissom. Mabry is already considered a OF/IF to a degree. As of now the bench is Blanco, Neifi/Cedeno, Hairston, Patterson, Mabry and Grissom. If the more veteran bullpen gives them confidence to go with just 11 pitchers, those 6 are in the lead. That's 2 MI, 1 corner IF/corner OF, 2 OF and 1 C. Teams do sign veterans to NRI all the time. And the Cubs happen to give those guys jobs all the time. The Cubs have 2 guys on their roster right now who they have openly talked about getting rid of, and they don't have enough other bench guys to push Grissom into a AAA spot. They still need bench help, not to mention a real starting corner OF or other bat, and starting pitching help. You paint a dark but not unrealistic pitcher there goon man. I hope it doesn't come to that.
  16. The thing about Rusch is that he is a 6 inning pitcher, just like Maddux. With him in the rotation the bullpen will get taxed. If Dusty continues to use his bp pitchers as in the past, that means the two or three best guys out of the pen will be used up by the ASB.
  17. I wouldn't get too worked up over Grissom. It is more than likely that ST is his audition for another team.
  18. Do you mean to say that Hendry has picked up a crucial piece of the puzzle for the offense? I agree. Yes, and when all the pieces are put together it looks like about like a .500 ball club. I agree Pierre and Jones are crucial to the Cubs finishing anywhere from 3rd to 5th.
  19. As the team makup looks right now, they appear to be a dangerous playoff team. What I mean is that the team is built for the short season that is the playoffs and not really for the long regular season. With Z, Prior, and Wood the Cubs can compete in any short series. They've added some bullpen help (at least on paper) and have improved the offense enough to compete on a small scale. As we know, it is not always the best team that wins but who is playing the best come the playoffs. Like every year the health of the starting rotation will tell the season. I am not optimistic about the Cubs chances but one never knows utill the games are played.
  20. By far the worst "color" man in the game. He talks over the play-by-play partner, is a master of the obvious, and all around idiot.
  21. It's called alleteration.
  22. If this is true, Mrs. CubinNY wll be a very happy bandwgn Cub fan. When I told her about the possible trade she said, "Why would they want to do something stupid like that." She has a way with words.
  23. Gary Carter has to be in the list of all time bad guys. I remember a fight between he and Buckner at home plate when he was with the Expos. Buckner intentionally stepped on his face mask as he was crossing home plate. Buckner kicked his ass too. I loved Buckner and never liked Leon Durham, never.
  24. Why should injures cost Belle the HOF when it didn't Puckett? I don't disagree with you Vance. The only thing I think the "voters" will look at are the team stats. Puckett has a world Series Ring and was a very big part of the Twins teams that made it. Belle was also a big part of the Indians team that lost to the Braves, though. Man looking back was that Cleveland team stacked or what?
  25. Belle will likely never get in (See also, Rice, Jim). IMO he is a borderline guy. I voted no, but I wouldn't complain if he did. Also like Dawson injuries probably cost him the HOF. Not a likeable guy, but a wonderful baseball player.
