  1. Do we really have excellent instructors? I'm probably one of the minor league instructors biggest critics. It's getting real old hearing how good so and so is yet seeing guys not reaching their potential. Guys like Choi, Hill, Kelton, Dubois Jackson, etc. I'm still seeing nothing really extraordinary from Harvey. So, our instructors are considered excellent based on.....? I was under the impression that the DJAXX had really good coaches. I think they do. Why doesn't the talent in the minors translate in the bigs? I think there are several reasons. Most are not under the organization's control, but some are. For example, I don't think it does much good to platoon a player until he demonstrates he cannot produce. Yet the Cubs want to platoon young guys. I don't think it does much good for a guy who is use to playing every day and sit them on the bench only to give them infrequent starts and pinch hits (Choi, Dubios, Hill) . It doesn't help a guy to yo-yo him from the big club to the minors, especially a pitcher who might go from starter in AAA to reliver in the bigs (Cruz, Z, Hill, Farns, etc). It doesn't help a young player by batting him in the 1 spot for a month then 2 then 6 then 7th then back to 1 (Patterson),
  2. I think they'd like to win the WS, but they've said over and over that their plan was to build a team to contend within the division (or similar phrases). They've never shown any desire to build a dominant team, rather one that could enjoy some success if everything works out right. It's called the "goodenough" philosphy and it will work on occasion, 1998 and 2003 ,but is not a way for a big money organization to build a championship calibur team. I rank your "goodenough" myth right up there with the myth that Cardinal fans are the most knowledgeable in baseball. It's not a myth it is a philosophy esposued by Jim Hendry. Every year he says something to the effect of, "Well, I think we are good enough to compete within the division". Don't believe me? You can look it up.
  3. I wonder what effect, if any trading Corey has on him.

  5. Good luck trading up into the top 5. New Orleans should trade down. No top pick will want to sign him them. If they sign Young they better put him at wide reciever or get the best QB coach they can find b/c right now he is not pro QB material. He is the most overhyped QB to come out since Lief. Different game but same QB talent.
  6. That is the genius that is the Cubs marketing and leadership. Have a 79 win season. Then when you have a high 80s win season call it an improvement. Hendry gets credit for improving a team that he created while the team that he created last year is used as the baseline from which to measure, brilliant!
  7. To me he sounds correct not bitter. JH has upgraded the team on paper. But how much? Not much if you ask me. Pierre is an upgrade, but a slight upgrade Jones is not an upgrade We don't know what we will get from Murton, but probably not enough power numbers to make a difference Cedeno will hit but not walk much Walker will never make it out of ST JH Jr and Neifie will split time at 2nd. Lee will likely regress Will Aramis be healthy all year? The starting pitching remains a question mark with Wood on the shelf The bullpen is upgraded, at least on paper. Bullpens are one of the hardest ascpects of a team to upgrade given the volitile nature of the bullpen from year to year.. Overall, I'd say about a .500 club. Certianly not what I was hoping for.
  8. updated 1/18/06
  9. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that everyone of thes guys doesn't go to arbitration. The numbers are very close. Z 1.2 mill Pierre 1.5 mill Prior 700 k Hairston 650 k Ohman 225 k
  10. Yes, he keeps robbing from those poor owners. I am surprised the guy is not in prision for all the money he has swindled from those great men.
  11. How about the Iowa Corn Jerkers? The Iowa Flat Landers? The Iowa Nibblets? (individual corn pieces) The Iowa Methanol Producers?
  12. Whenever Modzilla decides it's time to start a game thread, we'll let Modzilla start the game thread. :) Did you want to sign up, CubinNY? No thanks.
  13. Any details? Pure hopefull speculation: Big Z wanted to go for long term security and Boras wanted to go for short run profit. Pure pessimistic speculation: Big Z thinks he is worth more than Boras was going to offer in arbitration.
  14. Will Modzilla be starting any game threads? I like it when he/she/it/they starts, but it scares me a little too.
  15. 29 days from today!
  16. anyone? I hate this time of the year.
  17. McGuire and Bonds should not get in the HOF, although a case could be made that Bonds could get in on his Pittsburgh career alone. If they do get in, I hope the opening line on their plaque reads, "played during the steriod era".
  18. Gambling on baseball was against the rules of baseball. Taking steroids was not. No just illegal.
  19. Slappy Walk Lee Aramis Barrett Murton Jones Cedeno Pitcher
  20. I'd imagine he does. Of course, there's a difference between giving in a signing Neifi to a one-year deal and taking the initiative to sign him to a two-year deal. Maybe this will clear up what Dusty said: That seems much more reasonable and sane. Maybe Dusty has a case of "Contract-Year-itis" and is going to be a sane, effective manager. It's funny. Maybe I am too jaded with regard to Dusty but I can see things going something like this Dusty thinking to himself: Devil Dusty says, "Man Woody sure did light things up when he pitched in relief. Shoot, the dude looked unhittable. Man he would make a helluva reliever." Angel Dusty says, "But he is also a starting pitcher who is payed a lot of money to start and is pretty good at it." Devil Dusty, "Shoot, I got plenty of them starters and my middle relief pitchers couldn't get the job done. I might just throw him in the bullpen to start and hope the other five guys do well. Then what am I gonna do? Put one of them in the bullpen? That might ruin their psyches. Know what I mean?" Angel Dusty, "Well, I guess you got a point there man. Let's go fishin."
  21. Someone please explain the purpose of Wood in the pen when he gets healthy. Love the Cubs, hate what they are doing.
  22. The Brewers will win this division or win the Wild Card (you heard it here first). The Cards and Astros will show their age. The Cubs will start off poorly and then rebound and be around .500. Dusty will be gone after the ASB. Pittsburgh and Cincinatti don't have enough to contend Yost is a very good manager and they have a good mix of veterans (Lee and Jeokins, Koskie, Sheets) and young studs. They have 3 very good starting pitchers. The bullpen will tell the tale. If Kolb can get lucky with his ground ball outs they will be in business. My prediction as it stands today: Brewers 93 wins Cardinals 90 wins Astros 88 wins Cubs 80 wins Pittsburgh 77 wins Cincinnatti 72 wins
  23. McGwire's statement was basically an advisory from HIS attorney, also. Why is what Sosa did any better or worse than what McGwire did? Why wasn't Bonds required to be there? Why wasn't Clemens required to be there? The players were hand-picked for nothing more than propoganda purposes, and that's not fair. I'm glad McGwire chose not to be a freak in their little circus. People don't like it, but sometimes you have to go against the grain. Frankly, I don't think McGwire gives a rat's nose what people think, including Congress. And if the HOF voters are going to judge him on that mockery of a hearing, then I'll bet he doesn't care what THEY think, either. This thread is not about what Sosa or anyone else did or did not say. When Sammy and the othes come up for induction we can have this conversation.
  24. Done and done. My parents happen to be in Vegas this week. I just put a Benny on the Brewers. Bump (kind of), My dad went to the the sports book at the Riveria and the Brew crew were 60-1. I had him put $50 dollars down. Not 80-1 but a nice return on investment anyway
