    What are Pierre's numbers? I don't know about Pierre, but right about now I am wishing Mitre was still a Cub. I never thought he got a fair chance in Chicago. I don't think he is a world beater, but the Cubs could use another #3 or #4 with the health (or lack there of) the pitching staff.

    The moderators here keep trolling to a minimum and most of the people adhear to the conventions of the forum (attack the post not the poster). There are many knowldeable people that post here. It is a great place. One thing, if you have a strong opinon be ready to back it up becuase someone wil probably disagree. I agree with you that they will probably say minor inflamation of... and they will put him on some sort of schedule with no time table. This whole saga just reeks.

    Hello Neifi. It is only a matter of time before Hairston is injured. Cuse's prediction of Neifi getting in 140 games is not that far off it Walker is gone. Damn Walker's overactive tounge.

    True, but I think he deserves credit for giving the Dusty the benefit of the doubt, but not forever. His last sentence in this morning's column synthesized the issue very well - Guillen's SPs through more than 120 pitches 5 times all of last year. Guillen understands how to manage his assets; Dusty does not. Well said. Again I think it's because Ozzie had a bullpen Baker has never had that luxory since he's been here. That is BS. Furthermore, having a bad bullpen is no excuse for letting a pitcher go far past the point of effectiveness and to the point of injury. Having Z and Prior continue to pitch past a humdred or so when in a blow out is inexcusable. That happend more than a few times over the last couple of years. There were plenty of options in the bullpen. But when Dusty continues to put in Remlinger to face lefties you are demanding failure. When he trotts Farnsworth out for the 4 day out of the last six he is demanding failure. And on and on.

    Have the Cubs won the simulated WS yet? Over the last two seasons with Wood and Prior going every game they've probably had a good chance to do so. The Cubs are 35-11 in simulated games over the last two years. JoBo and Rusch haven't held up their end of the rotation. Still 24 games over 500 is pretty nice.

    I disagree. WHIP is just another metric. It is not a catch-all metric anymore than winshares, wins, ERA or any other tool used to evaluate a pitcher. I'd be interested to see if WHIP has any predictive validity from year to year. If it does it could be a useful metric, if not, well it as least as useful as anything else. All of these pitching metrics are just small pieces to the larger picture of whether a pitcher is "good". Good is a value judgment that some would use independent of any metric or analysis. But I think the value judgment is much better if it is backed up by some data. In the case of a pitcher I would hope the data used would be less dependent on the offense or the defense behind the pitcher. Regardless, I don't think anyone would use WHIP alone to make that judgment. But for some it is easier to set up a weak argument for the sole purpose of knocking it down. Which is the case with Cubbierich more often than not.

    Man I am fired up about Pie. I hope he hits well and strikes out less in Iowa this year. If he comes along that will give the Cubs some flexibality with regard to Pierre and Jones. I am just as fired up about Guzman/Marshall though. If those two reach thier potential it opens up a lot of options and cash for the Cubs to pursue other avenues whether via trade or free agency.

    Where did you read/hear this? It is news to me. If the pitchers are whining about the defense at second base then maybe they should throw better pitches. IMO Walker's defense is not that bad. Certianly not bad enough to warrent a position battle with the likes of Neifi Perez and Jerry Hairston Jr.

    If Neifi is the everyday 2nd baseman for an extended period of time this summer, the Cubs chances of winning the division are even smaller then before. I don't think Hairston is that great a shakes either. And we know he probably won't be healthy for an entire season. I like Walker. Just infering from his comments, I believe he thinks he is getting a raw deal. I don't know if that is what he thinks, but if he does I agree with him. All the same though, he should bring it up with management and not the media.

    From the Cubs.com article I'd say that is pretty contriversial. I wonder what Dusty will say to him, because one of them isn't being truthfull.

    Walker sure doesn't know when to keep his head down and mouth quiet. I don't know maybe he doesn't feel like he should have to compete for a job. I can't say I blame him. But I wouldn't talk like that. I still think he doesn't make it out of Arizona as a Cub.

    That's a little extreme, I think. Bad calls happen all the time, and not because of some grand conspiracy. I'm more apt to chalk this one up to natural human fallability than premeditated malice. I don't disagree. It is just a shame that it happened. The strike zone was all over the place all day and if they cover the bag on Wells bunt, it is on to extra innings. Often perception is reality in these instances.

    why? USA would of won 5-4 if we assume everything went the same way. No one knows what would have happened if that call is not overturned. I hope the umps sleep well tonight

    I agree completely. Good luck convincing the baseball "men" who played "the game" and the wannabe Sox clones on that one though. Even so, I think given Patterson's struggles with the Cubs, they had to let him go. Now the choice is/was; is Pierre the best option? I think that depends on who was available. I would have been happy to get Wilkerson or someone else instead of Pierre, but we will never know what could have been. We just have to hope that Pierre performs to career norms with regard to OBP. What worries me more is that the Cubs haven't got another run producer. I am as big a fan of Murton as anyone but thus far he has not shown he can hit for much power save the short stint he had with the club at the end of the season last year. I reallly don't expect much out of Jones and we know Pierre isn't going to hit for power. That puts termendus pressure on Aramis, Lee, and Barrett (not really a run producer either). I still think the Cubs will struggle to score runs on a consistent basis.

    I love this. This is the crux of the stats vs. convential wisdom arguement. CW: Hey you showed me some data that proves your point but I don't like it. So it proves nothing. ST: But the numbers don't lie. CW: So what? I don't like them so you can stop using them. I'll keep my uninformed opinion thank you.
