  1. My personal opinion is that neither of those deals would get the players that you wanted. That's just IMO, but for example what the Braves were looking for before the trade deadline (when they were actually a little more desperate because they wanted to trade him before his 10/5 rights activated) is more than Marshall and Veal. I have no idea either. I'm terrible witht this stuff, but a guy can dream. Can't he?
  2. I don't know how I'd feel about it, but would Prior and Fox net A-Rod? Move him back to short, amd trade Marshall and Gallagher or Veal for Andruw Jones. Sign Zito and/or Shmidt and call it an offseason. I have no idea what to do with Neifi Jr. though Jones Murton Arod Lee Rameriz Barrett Jones Cedeno/Theriot Z/Shmidt or Zito/Hill/?/?wood? That would be a team built for the post season.
  3. Baseball on the radio kicks ass. I most strongly agree.
  4. Tim, I haven't been able to access premium for about a week. I'm not sure if my membership is due or what. In the meantime I've sent you a check for $50 just in case. I would also ask anyone else who is reading this to help Tim out. The $50 is equal to about 13 cents per day. We all love this place and I don't think Tim is asking too much for the community to share in the costs of keeping it up. just my 2 cents (pun intended)
  5. Have you seen him manage? I'm here all week folks.
  6. The playoff teams averaged 68.25 sac bunts compared to the Marlins 76, and the league average of 74.4. I stand by what I said, I think you overstated your case. Point conceded.
  7. Pick the playoff teams from 2006 and see where they fall in the sac bunt situation: 1 Colorado 119 2 Houston 100 3 Chicago Cubs 84 4 San Francisco 80 5 Atlanta 78 6 NY Mets 77 7 Washington 76 8 Florida 76 9 St. Louis 71 10 Cincinnati 66 11 LA Dodgers 66 12 Pittsburgh 62 13 Arizona 61 14 San Diego 59 15 Milwaukee 58 16 Philadelphia 57 Edit: Thanks Fred, you are the man Here are the stats for the AL and show a similar trend http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?statType=batting&group=7&seasonType=2&type=type2&sort=sacHits&split=0&season=2006 I'd be willing to be we could go back a number of years and see the same trend. Lot's of teams sac bunt, but more than not the ones that use it the least win the most.
  8. 2005 Whitesox. Worked out pretty well for them . The '05 White Sox were a below average offense. Okay, now I'm done, I mean it. Hopefully you're done. Because everything you just said is not even close to being true. Oh cripes, look it up for yourself. Link 9th in the AL, and middle of the pack in MLB with the benefit of the DH. I thought you were done? Btw, the Whitesox had the best offense in MLB this year, and where did that get them? Jim Thome banging homeruns and Dye having a career year.
  9. What does that mean? Again, are you kidding me? Not too hard to understand what that means. What does leadership have to do with winning baseball. You really don't think that a good leader vs. someone who is lousy at leading makes a difference? Not in baseball. The manager's job is to put his team in the best position to win. If you want to call that leadership, I'll go with it. Aside from making a lineup card and changing pitchers I don't see how a "leader" has any effect in a baseball game?
  10. I didn't realize forearm tightness was a season ending injury? And here this whole time I though they were overly cautions since there was only 2 1/2 weeks left in the season and playoff hopes had faded. Strained legiment in his arm, not a cramp. and there is/was no excuse for it. And at the time they we're well in the hunt. I see your roll and raise you two
  11. What does that mean? Again, are you kidding me? Not too hard to understand what that means. What does leadership have to do with winning baseball. I might add that if it does have anything to do with it, Girardi hasn't demonstrated it because his team didn't win and had more talent than the Cubs. Did he will those rookie pitchers to pitch well? Or Cabrerea to put up another monster season? Did he will the Red Sox to trade him one of the best young SS in the game? Did his leadership ability lead to getting Slappy for a certian talented lefthander and two other pretty decent young pitchers?
  12. Why? Are you kidding me? He managed a team with a $14 million dollar payroll, and had them in contention for the wild card untill the last 2 weeks in the season. Everyone predicted the marlins to lose over 100 games this year. The team didn't have a winning season, had some of the best young talent in baseball and he was responsible for sending one of their best young pitchers out after a long rain delay. The pitcher then had a season ending arm injury in the same game. He is infatuated with the sac bunt, made poor personnel decisions at the begining of the year and was told to make changes. I don't see any reason why the cubs better pick him.
  13. What are you wearing?
  14. Well, that's what you're going to see b/c the people doing the hiring subscribe to that baseball philosophy. No Dierker. Maybe a Francona, but he's seemingly not available anymore. Girardi is a guy that leads by example. Personally, I've always prefered that type. Guys like Girardi are leaders. Guys like Baker are managers. We need his fire and discipline in this clubhouse. A fat lefty setup man who complains about the fans needs to get his priorities straight. Winning is what matters, not keeping the media, fans, or the Front Office happy. Girardi made that clear in Florida. Are we really back to the "fire and discipline" argument? Those are not the 2 traits that kept us from winning this season. Those are not traits than really ever make a difference between a winning team and a losing team. Those are not important traits in a manager of a baseball team. Yeah, we do need discipline, but that wasn't the main part of my post. "Girardi is a guy that leads by example. Personally, I've always prefered that type. Guys like Girardi are leaders. Guys like Baker are managers." What does that mean? Girardi isn't planning a battle or running for governor. To me what matters is: (a) what are his in game strategies (b) what is his track record © how does he handle a pitching staff I can't say that I don't want Giardi, but one of the reasons to want or not want him has nothing to do with his rah, rahness.
  15. That is about the best reason I've heard yet. Especially if Hendry is fired at the end of the 2007 season or if the Cubs are sold. It's pretty cool that we're thinking about how easy it will be to fire the next guy when discussing who should be hired. I know. It's terrible to think that way, but my optimism about this club is shot.
  16. I smell something fishy.
  17. That is about the best reason I've heard yet. Especially if Hendry is fired at the end of the 2007 season or if the Cubs are sold.
  18. What do you like about Francona? Francona was on the Discovery Channel's show about the science of baseball (i.e., sabermetrics) and talked glowingly about the *new* types of analytical analysis. I don't know if affects his management though.
  19. I'd probably go with Brenly. I don't like the issues and baggage that belong to Girardi. I'd hope that some of Len's knowlede had at least rubbed off on Brenly and that he might consider things like run expectancy in making decisions. What issues? Him telling Loria to quit yelling at the umpires? It's Girardi's job to communicate with the umpires, not the owner. thats not necessarilly "baggage." I'd also have to have a stronger endorsement of Brenly other than he's sat with a PBP guy the past two years. It probably won't be either one of these guys anyway. The owner can pretty much do whatever he or she pleases. It is not up to the coach to do anything. Nor should he. The owner signs the checks and gets to yell at whomever he pleases.
  20. That is just the first step, too. Right now the Cubs are not a good team. It really won't matter who is manager unless the talent level on this team rises significantly. Getting a healthy Mark Prior would be great, too. the funny thing is that I blame Dusty less for the debacle of this season then any other season, and it's the worst of his tenure. No, this team is Jim Hendry's mess and I hope he can fix it, but I'm not optimistic.
  21. If true, this speaks about Hendry's willingess/ability to do what is best for the Cubs. He always talks about doing the right thing and making fair deals and treating people right. Theoretically this is to give the Cubs a reputation as a team that is good to deal with. Yet it also can lead to missing the boat on guys. Hendry refuses to even talk about future candidates yesterday, as if he was caught off guard that he'd need a new manager. This is why you fire Baker in June. This is why you don't wait to the last minute. This is why you don't get an obvious lame duck play out the string when you need to move forward. Hendry is more interested in keeping his good guy image intact than he is in making the Cubs winners. I'm guessing Hendry would play this off as he was looking in another direction anyway. But there is absolutely no justification for him treating this situation the way he did. The decision could have and should have been handled much earlier, and the candidates could have and should have been lined up already. I agree. Hendry has, once again, been caught tottally flat footed. At the same time I wonder if Gonzelaz was even a viable candidate. Absolutely nothing was gained by keeping Baker around.
  22. Why do some people want Girardi to manage the Cubs. Here is what I've come up with in the order of importance 1. He use to play for the Cubs 2. He went to Northwestern 3. He was the Yankees bench coach I don't get it.
