  1. My opinon is that this was a "better" trade for the Sox, but not one that makes much of a difference in the big picture. If I'm wrong and it does set up Eyre to be traded for a starter, my opinon might change.
  2. I agree. It's one of the "change of scenery" type trades. I really don't know how it sets the Cubs up to deal Eyre? :?: What is your question? A team can have more than one left handed reliever on the team, last time I checked the rule book. I don't know A) How this trade makes the Cubs any better or B) Makes Eyre an more available.
  3. More than likely it will make Co Co and Willy -Mo more available.

  5. That rumor has been posted. If it is true and I were Hendry I would talk to Boras and tell him that the Cubs can beat that offer by a large amount. Maybe Drew wants the lime-light that 18 or 19 games against the Yankees brings. Or maybe he thinks Boston has the best chance of winning so no dollar amount will matter. However, the first time he's out of the line up for an ingrown toe nail the media and fans will be all over him. Look what they did to Nomar and he was a hero.
  6. I approve of this message. Drew is a much better risk in both dollars and years for the Cubs. I hope Hendry realizes this and it overcomes his appearent man-lust for Soriano.
  7. especially if Liriano is out for an extended time I am going to disable signatures unless you remove that picture. We get the point.
  8. I can see the Cubs giving a ridicilous contract to Soriano, but I cannot see them landing Drew. If they lose out on Soriano after Drew signs that will be bad. I'd rather them sign Drew (if that is truely their intention) and see what happens with Soriano. Pill Roger's comments not withstanding, I don't think the Cubs are interested in Drew. It makes too much sense. Much more so than signing Soriano to a ridiculous contract and asking him to play a position he's never played and at the age of 31 no less. CF is much tougher to play than either RF or LF.
  9. Really? I'm starting to have a really good feeling about it. And it starts with the fact that we A) seem to have no interest in Zito, and B) are showing interested in Drew. I agree. I like that Hendry and Pineilla seem to be changing the philosophy a bit, targeting J.D. Drew and hiring a guy like Perry to be the hitting coach. I like that Hendry is working like his pants are on fire for a change. I love the payroll increase. I feel a whole lot better now than I did a couple weeks ago, that's for sure. What evidence is there that the Cubs are targeting Drew? I haven't seen any.
  10. If the Cubs get Alph you can forget Drew.
  11. I really am not a fan of Soriano at the asking price (dollars + years). Hendry has a bulldog mentality when it comes to these things. He was willing to trade Sosa for Alph a few years ago. Hendry usually gets him man, (Furcal, thank Len, withstanding). Unfortuneatley, his men have been mediocre or middle relievers that are about as reliable as an Iraqi Police officer. If they do get Alph, I'd like to see him moved back to 2nd base, but again Hendry is all about defense up the middle. So that will likely not happen. I just don't know. I don't like Soranio for CF and I like having Murton in LF. However, the Cubs need run producers. If they trade Murton, I hope they get something of good value in return. I could see Murton having a Paul O'Neil type career. I suppose they could trade JJ and move Soranio to RF (bring on the Sammy comparisons that aren't valid, Chicago media) IMO, three things that make me think Hendry will get Soriano 1. Hendry believes "lead-off" is a position in the field 2. Hendry has been infatuated with Soraino (like he was for Barrett) 3. Hendry usually gets his man
  12. Like everyone else, I'm going to wait and see what happens with the rest of the offseason. Yet, I believe it is appropriate to comment on every personnel decison Hendry makes. Right now, the big picture does not look too promissing. So far Hendry has done nothing to improve the team, although he has maintained the status quoe DeRosa = Walker Blanco = Blanco Aramis = Aramis Maybe with a healthy Lee all year a better outcome will result.
  13. Unfortunatly Vance, I don't think Hendry would have traded Maddux if he didn't think Izturis was his SS. I think he (and a lot of other Baseball Men) still lives in the 1970s-1980s when the SS was there soley for his glove. Not a bad idea if you have a strong line up around him. But the Cubs don't.
  14. I've been thinking about this for awhile. Especially after Arte Moranio (the Angles owner) was willing to rid himself of big bucks for Aramis. It seems to me that the owners in the AL are much more agressive and much more willing to spend the money to get top tier FAs then the NL clubs. I wonder if this an effect of the Yankees and the Red Sox, or of my imagination. In other words, I don't know if this is true or not but it is my perception
  15. Why pay a guy 4 million dollars per year to be a partime player. Even if he does platoon it makes Hendry twice the bad GM, first for giving Jones the money he did and then for giving Derosa the money. Put those two salaries together and add Rusch's slaray and the Cubs could probably get close to signing Drew. Hoops analysis was to suggest you can get better than Drew's production out of a platoon for less money than what it would take to get Drew. I think DeRosa will get some time this way, but he will probably get another 200 ABs in a super-utility role, primarily at 2B. Hoops analysis, although laudable, is based on two career years from two guys taking two roster spots who, if they have career years again, might equal the average production of Drew who only takes up one roster spot.

  17. :pint: Make mine a double. Some times a leopard cannont change his spots, Hendry continues to overpay for crappy ball players.
  18. Mark DeRosa would be a good guy to sign for a bench role at @ 1 mill/year or less. But at 4 million for three years, and as a started he is not a significant upgrade.
  19. The plan, if true, is a big mistake in my opinion. No one knows if Soriano can play CF and he will be fabulously overpaid for the last 2 to 3 years of his contract. I wonder if Hendry is still looking for the mythical "lead off" position? I don't have much of a problem trading Murton or Jones, but the Cubs have to get a young run producer from somewhere, and his name isn't Carlos Lee. He is neither young, nor worth the money. This off-season it seems as if the Cubs plan is to buy their way to the pennant, but I don't like who they have on the shopping list.
  20. Zito won't be signed until January or February.
  21. Imerm wrote Someone explain that logic to me please.
  22. If a team is going to give him one they might as well give it for the length, those last two years will be difficult to trade him with the money he is making.
  23. That's right, nobody likes 40 40 guys. we need walks. LOL In five years Alph will be 35 plus change. I agree with IMB.
  24. Even though I am an alumni, I cannot say I am a fan of OSU. I'm not a big Michigan backer either. However, I will say that Ohio State will destroy Michigan this weekend. I don't even think it will be close. Jim Tressel is twice the coach of Lloyd Carr, has as much talent, and is playing at home. He's also has a 4-1 record against Michigan and he's never lost agains Michigan at home. Columbus will be more crazy that normal, which is saying something. 38-10 OSU Other stats: 24 couches burned, 10 sexual assults, and 15 arrests for drunk and disorderly. It would be more but Clarrett is already in the pokey.
