  1. south bend gave up a home run to joey pankake.
  2. The Giants rotation is 20% Bumgarner, 20% Chris Heston trying to keep up his current pace, and 60% mediocrity or worse. Don't be a 'today was bad so everything is bad forever' person. Perhaps his use of "significantly" better was too complimentary toward the Giants, but I do think he's right that they are better. I'm more confident in them winning a playoff spot than the Cubs. And it has nothing to do with today. The use of "significantly" was overstating the truth, but the point that "there's not much than can be done to change that" isn't realistic, either. There are plenty of pieces available to change this lineup. At the same time, there is plenty of reason to ride out this season with what we have and begin to put better pieces into place this offseason, while holding onto most of (if not all of) our valuable trade commodities. i know you're new here, but you're going to have to learn that this type of rational and level-headed response is not appropriate for game threads.

Don't be a 'today was bad so everything is bad forever' person. is the worst part of being a moderator having to read every post in game threads instead of having most of the posters on your ignore list? blink twice for yes.
  4. Come up with a better reason than that. "kinda sucks" is much less pathetic than "can't handle being no hit."
  5. i.e. every no-hitter? no. dial down the derp, please.
  6. i feel like all of the outs came either via strikeouts or hard hit balls right at somebody.
  7. since when does hamels sit in the mid 90s with his fastball?
  8. Yesterday and it's not even close. Today. Only because I can't handle getting no-hit. why not? I take pride in saying we have the longest streak and that its never happened in my lifetime. That and the people who will talk smack to me. oh okay, so two terrible reasons for why you "can't handle it." i'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you undergo all that smack talking from your friends and co-workers.

  10. petition to call them the cobs in tomorrow's game thread title. losing a home series to the phillies and consistently failing to produce runs merits the cob label.
  11. if we do end up trading for hamels, i hope he continues to get this many hard-hit outs going directly at his fielders.
  12. he's a known troll. put him on foe list.
  13. surely i'm not the only one who remembers that this guy was in our minor league system a few years ago?
  14. carl edwards jr, who some people would like to see pitching in the majors, walked another 3 batters and only recorded 2 outs.
  15. baez hit by pitch in his first plate appearance, which is probably not what the cubs want for a guy coming back from a broken bone.
  16. The Brewers are 24-8 over their last 32, including a 15 game win streak in late June/early July. And they've been hitting the [expletive] out of the ball over that stretch. Kind of boggles the mind that even after that, they're still 19.5 back in the division/10 in the WC. Their 23-39 start to the season doomed them by June, but that's mostly because they never seemed to have more than 2 of their starters healthy at the same time over that stretch. No idea where you're getting your numbers but they didn't go 24-8 over their last 32 (it's 18-14), they didn't have a 15 game winning streak (it was 8) and not only were they never 23-39, but 16 game under .500 wasn't even their low point (it was 25-46, after which they're 17-8).

  18. i can't decide if jon gant reminds me more of former outfielder ron gant, or ayn rand's [expletive] character john galt.
  19. colin cowherd sacked by espn, a week before he was scheduled to leave. he will not be missed. http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/13314040/colin-cowherd-no-longer-espn-air-comments-dominican-republic-players
  20. Of 136 qualified relievers, the Cubs have 3 of the top 50 in Win Probability Added. That doesn't even include Grimm, who has been terrific this year and due to injury and Maddon's preference hasn't been given many high leverage innings. cubs pitchers in close/late situations, per baseball reference: .221/.299/.327/.625
  21. yes their top-10-in-baseball bullpen is garbage. i'm starting to get close to the point where more than half of the posts in game threads are on my ignore list.
  22. i know clutch hitting isn't really a thing, but at some point the cubs are going to have to do better in that area. .225 with RISP and below .200 with RISP and 2 outs is a killer. they lost today because the phillies had 4 hits with RISP and the cubs continued to fail when they had opportunities to pad the lead.
  23. see him walk 7 batters per 9 innings pitched? no thanks. He wouldn't be put in tight games. Better yet, he wouldn't be throwing 87 with no life. walking nearly a batter an inning is still a problem regardless of the score of the baseball game that you're pitching in.
  24. see him walk 7 batters per 9 innings pitched? no thanks.
