  1. whizbang's team currently has a .332 BA and .988 OPS, which is pretty ridiculous after 3 weeks.
  2. i'll tell you one mirage who needs to come down to earth - joel pineiro. he has 5 strikeouts in 32 innings and yet his ERA is under 4. what is this crap.
  3. I can't decide if I'm excited about Searle or not. Is there anyway that GO to FO ratio is sustainable? If he starts striking people out then he may vault way up the prospects to watch list. A 19 year old in A+ with his current level of success merits some level of excitement. plus he's australian, he doesn't have the baseball experience that most players at that level have.
  4. clevenger has a double and triple. he could be interesting as an offensive catcher.
  5. They do need to put him on the DL, but my guess is that he is refusing to go on the DL because of the effect it could have on his contract vesting. I'm not sure who gets to make the final call, but if the Cubs try to put him on the DL and he says he isn't hurt, would it turn into a grievance with the MLBPA? that would be a PR disaster for bradley, hopefully he and his agent are smart enough to see that. players who aren't healthy enough to play much over a 10-day stretch routinely go on the DL.
  6. i'm not writing off vitters. i'm using what i've read in scouting reports, which is that his ability to make contact is so good that he hasn't really needed to learn plate discipline, and his swing is aimed more toward hitting line drives than hitting for power. that's cool if he ends up hitting .310 or .320 regularly, but if he doesn't walk much and doesn't hit for much power, we'll have the next jeff cirillo on our hands. a nice player, but not really the impact bat you want when you're drafting 3rd overall.
  7. and theriot, and ramirez hitting great and playing most of the games, and hoffpauir and koyie hill, and heilman and marmol and lilly and marshall.
  8. haha, chris baker and maurice evans went undrafted. good riddance.
  9. that's in 4 games. last year he had a 1.25 WHIP and a .245/.308/.416 line against. he's not "pray for rain".
  10. How quickly we forget 2008. as roast pointed out, you're picking and choosing and basically looking ridiculous.
  11. you're leaving out wellemeyer, who was legitimately good last year and seems to be magically flourishing there, so i wouldn't write him off as "pray for rain." pineiro isn't good and boggs is terrible, but if carpenter comes back after the all star break that's four above-average starters. plus they do have a pretty good minor league system now and can make a trade if they're in contention.
  12. the impression i've gotten from scouting reports is that fox would be a disaster at every position at 1B, where he'd merely be bad because you don't have to do much.
  13. good call what a bold stance to take, questioning his half-assed prediction after it's been proven wrong... it was a dumb prediction. the rangers had a 3-2 lead but barely hung on to win a game in NY, got completely outplayed in game 5 and seem to be a mess. a role player who has been ineffective all series is going to turn the team around? come on.
  14. pretty sure that was discussed about 15 pages ago. i liked the teams that traded a first round pick in next year's draft - expected to be a stronger group of players - to acquire a second round pick in this year's draft. those moves always pay off. i also thank seattle for giving the eagles a 3rd round pick in next year's draft, plus a 5th (cornelius ingram) and 7th in this year's draft, for a pick late in the 3rd round (deon butler).
  15. welcome to NJ Devils hockey.
  16. by who, and how drunk were they when they said that? yeah, no kidding. Sandoval is almost certainly going to hit more than 45 homers during his career. that's true, he didn't specify time frame.
  17. jamie walker? i guess that depends on whether you consider him talented.
  18. there is no way that this team will be as bad as the 2006 cubs; that team was bad on paper. the mariners also had a really bad offense that was really bad because most of the team was either completely washed up (vidro, sexson, johjima) or couldn't hit (jeremy reed, yuniesky betancourt, the entire bench). jarrod washburn, carlos silva and miguel batista were terrible signings who pitched terribly. if this cub team sucks it will be because everyone gets hurt, not because players perform like they're supposed to.
  19. the 15 people who root for each of those teams.
  20. i'm going to give david ortiz another week; if he doesn't get his ass in gear then he's gone.
  21. once again my pitching is hurting me. last year i would've finished 3rd if i'd stuck with my original pitchers. this year i have: danny cabrera: he's been awful, giving up 34 hits + walks and striking out only 7 in 18 1/3 innings of work, but he was fortunate to have given up 7 unearned runs, so his ERA is a decent 4.42. ian snell: has also been worse than his ERA, giving up 38 hits + walks and 4 HRs in just 22 IP, but he did toss a shutout (or at least gave up no earned runs in a start) and his ERA is 4.50.
  22. by who, and how drunk were they when they said that?
  23. why's that? because fox will cost runs defending? of course he will, but he's also seeing the ball really well so you might as well try to ride that. if you call him up and he goes hitless for 3 games then it's back to the minors for him. playing reed johnson against RHP isn't exactly a bang-up idea either.
  24. how do you decide which teams to root for? cubs, rockets and 49ers???
  25. it's too early to panic but it's not too late to start taking the cardinals seriously.
