  1. well wait, you can't say that dempster and a bunch of cub positioned players overproduced last year and can be expected to fall back, but assume that ludwick, skippy, the various third basemen (last year mostly glaus), wellemeyer, lohse and various bullpen pitchers will all be just as good.
  2. beats talking Illinois basketball. beats talking irrelevant hoops. yeah, thats what i said. that's like tonya harding accusing britney spears of being white trash. or like oj calling the john ramsey a murderer. so illinois basketball is britney spears?
  3. if theriot starts trying to hit for power he will stink. he's small, doesn't weigh much and doesn't have much loft in his swing. he has gotten a couple of inner-half pitches and was able to drive them, but power isn't his game and if he tries to hit home runs, he'll end up just hitting a lot more fly balls and making more outs. if he can drive bad pitches into the gaps and maybe get a home run here and there, that's fine, but he shouldn't start trying to make power a part of his game. leave that to the guys who can do so without hurting the rest of their game.
  4. i actually think the cards have a pretty solid pen. franklin wasn't good when he got to st. louis but magically turned into a pretty solid reliever. mcclellan is pretty good, reyes is solid when used properly (vs RHP) and i'd expect either motte or perez to turn into good relievers, if not both of them. they're not great but i think they'll be better than last year.
  5. well he went a full season with a 3.71 ERA in 2008, i'm not sure i understand your confidence in making this statement.
  6. beats talking Illinois basketball. beats talking irrelevant hoops. sigh
  7. They should use (bullpen ERA*2.5) It's shorthand. oh and here i thought we weren't supposed to do that.
  8. i didn't realize greene's defense had gone the way of his offense. early in his career he was very good defensively. ankiel isn't great but i think his reads have improved with experience. also, isn't it a bit of a plus that teams don't run on him because of his arm? he at least prevents an extra base being taken even if he's not getting the out. i think pujols and molina both being +15 defenders makes them at least an average defensive team if not better.
  9. so they're walking a guy who hits like a pitcher to get to the pitcher...
  10. You needn't be so harsh in your judgements. I can well imagine myself using it on many occasions; aye, it'd be pronounced 'neen'', but it'd be there. Its - I guess - dying out like 'oughtn't' and 'shan't' and it saddens me. However, language is alive, and you've got to allow it to develop or it will become French. Having said that, I can imagine both sentences be used at different times. There's a subtle difference in meaning between the two. i should have qualified my post with "unless you are british or are in great britain"
  11. 28 strikes and 6 balls for lilly. fortunately he doesn't seem to have picked up any wildness from the rest of our pitching staff.
  12. yeah i'm done with ortiz. drop him and add kinsler.
  13. nice job lee. thank God his contract only runs through 2010.
  14. i think their defense is actually pretty good. molina and pujols are two of the best defenders in baseball at their positions, and greene is a good shortstop. ankiel makes some questionable reads but has a great arm; rasmus and ludwick are fine at their positions (duncan is not). can't say i know much about skippy at 2B or barden/thurston at 3B.
  15. i don't really see how "double penetration gay story-567" is a bulls discussion.
  16. the penguins needed 6 games to be a lousy, poorly coached flyers team.
  17. wait so you're saying that OPS isn't the be-all, end-all of baseball player evaluation? maybe certain nsbb posters should become more familiar with this concept.
  18. well his velocity was down and it's rich harden, that's probably why the geniuses asked the question about whether there's a physical issue.
  19. i'm gonna need some audio of pat & ron calling the slam
  20. people are talking about whether this is the greatest series of all time? i guess it's interesting and the teams may be more closely matched than just about any two teams that have ever met in an NBA playoff series, but really isn't it just because the celtics are missing their best player and the teams are equally "pretty good?" i mean, nobody thinks either of these teams have a shot in hell at beating the cavs, so i have a hard time getting that into it.
