  1. theriot has below-average range and his arm is a little below average but he makes up for it by being sure handed and reading balls well off the bat. the sum makes him average, which is supported by most of the defensive metrics out there, but people have this idea that he's atrocious defensively so they jump on him for not getting to bouncers that ozzie smith in his prime could not have reached. if he's "awful" and "terrible" let's see some statistical support for that notion.
  2. i think renteria is a good comp; once castro fills out he'll be roughly the same weight as renteria and the same height (assuming no weird growth spurt). he can probably have good doubles power for a SS and 10-15 home run ability. renteria for most of his career was above-average but not elite defensively, and it seems like castro can be that. i think andrus has elite defensive ability but not as much pop.
  3. With the season ending on Monday, they could play around with Monday's game (Aaron Shafer should start that one) and set up the red-hot Shafer to start on Wednesday with ABD on Thursday on 5 days rest. forgot about shafer... you're right, with the roll he is on it will probably be shafer and ABD in the first two games of the series, then i would guess archer. antigua is a nice weapon to have if any of them struggle.
  4. so who starts game 2 for peoria? right now, it looks like they have it set up for antigua to pitch tomorrow night and archer sunday night, which would put them on four days rest for starts in games 2 and 3.
  5. tennessee is up 10 now. chattanooga lost so the smokies should be up 1 on west tenn and 2 on chattanooga after tonight, with each team having 3 games left to play. that means that if the smokies win 2 out of their last 3 they will win the division, if they win 1 then they will finish tied with west tenn and chattanooga will need to have won all 3 of their games to be tied.
  6. yeah i'm strongly considering him putting him at the top of my list after this season. i really thought they were rushing him too much with the promotion to daytona, but he handled himself nicely there and has continued to hold his own against much older competition at tennessee. i'd like to see some more scouting reports of his defense, but there's not much to dislike about castro at this point. i have no idea what to think of colvin. he's a good athlete who can probably be a plus fielder in the corners, he's pretty good pop and can hit LHP, has been great in the second half of this season. on the downside, he still doesn't walk enough and this is his third crack at AA. he's only 23 (24 tomorrow) and it is too early to write him off, but i still have a hard time seeing him as an everyday player.
  7. the rout is on in jackson! colvin caps a 10-run 6th with a grand slam.... he's 3-4 with 3 runs, 5 RBI and a double short of the cycle. castro is 3-4 with a triple.
  8. nice to see the cubs continue to not score against bad pitchers while ryan ludwick goes 5-5 with 2 home runs.
  9. back and forth for tennessee. they went up 1-0 on a castro ground out, but gave up 3 in the 4th. in the 6th they have come back with 3 runs - m. smith homer, lalli double, colvin RBI single, colvin SB, castro triple (second triple in as many nights). minor league baseball gamecast makes it look like both triples were near home runs, but who knows if that's where the balls landed or rolled to. bibens-dirkx had a fairly poor outing for peoria. i had assumed he would start in game 1 of their playoff series - not sure if that will happen or not (don't know when the series starts and if he'll have enough rest by then).
  10. clearly baker didn't get the memo about tanking.
  11. would it be unprofessional for him to say "when the cubs finish losing this game..."
  12. hopefully we can completely melt down and lose like 20 in a row. let's get a top 10 pick.
  13. man this bobby parnell guy must be awesome, right?
  14. he isn't getting suspended. now i wouldn't have a problem with him getting a game, but there's a big difference between trash talking (happens all the time) and cold cocking a guy, followed by hitting a teammate in the face, trying to go after opposing fans and requiring several people to get you under control. if he'd done what most normal people do in the face of taunting - shove the other guy back, yell a little bit - he'd still be on the team.
  15. but we can't, so let's just not bring up the possibility.
  16. i guess he still maintains his scholarship, which is why they're saying he wasn't kicked off the team. i think kicked off the team means no scholarship too.
  17. the old pirates' announcer would've had about 5 wpm. they might as well have dubbed in crickets.
  18. i doubt it was the n bomb, unless the boise st guy wants to get a beat down by about 50 of his teammates. it was probably just trash talk about blount's ass-whuppin comment and blount hauled off and slugged him. he'd get suspended for that, but then going after fans and his own teammates? i'd think that would get him a harsher punishment from the team/university. Blount looks like a total class act. i liked him hopping around after he did it and then pushing his teammates. way to be a complete d-bag.

  20. hey he said they owed boise st an ass-whuppin...probably just wanted to follow through on his word.
