  1. i must have missed michigan switching from nike to adidas, when did that happen?
  2. hendry gives us a good chance to sign one of the 1b? money coming off the books plus the cubs playing in one of the largest metro areas in the u.s. gives the cubs a good chance to sign one of the 1b.
  3. vitters came into game 2 and immediately made an error playing 1b. seriously, 17 errors is pretty [expletive] awful in mid-june for a guy playing corner infield. nick struck pitched pretty well but his defense folded in the 6th inning. wonder if he's got some potential as a back of the rotation guy? don't know much about his stuff.
  4. my favorite part of that post is the "saito is a closer" thing... yes, if you stopped paying attention after 2008 then he's a closer. meanwhile wood, who was closing games in 2010 for the indians, is a middle reliever. this is what it looks like when someone combines a poor grasp of the game with an irrational disdain for a certain player.
  5. braun was giving back like 30 runs a year at 3b; even if he's a poor lf the brewers were going to save a lot of runs just by moving him off a position where he was completely incompetent.
  6. not really... most systems probably have lists like that. there are a handful of guys who have to be protected - szczur, vitters, beliveau, flaherty - then a few guys you might want to protect and a bunch of filler. right now the 40-man has a bunch of guys who can easily go away without anyone being upset - berg, caridad, maybe coleman, doug davis, grabow, rodrigo lopez, koyie hill, campana, reed johnson, montanez and fernando perez. teams with real 40-man roster crunches are teams that are deep in talent at the upper minors and major league level. the cubs don't have that problem.
  7. speaking of dave littlefield, one of my favorite mlb trades of all time was the one where the pirates acquired matt morris for rajai davis. the pirates were thoroughly out of the playoff race that year and took on like $3m of morris' salary in 2007, then $10m in 2008 (making him the highest-paid pirate in franchise history). he had an ERA around 7 for the pirates and was released 5 games into the 2008 season. littlefield is lucky to have a job in baseball after a trade like that.
  8. As a team, they drew 12 walks yesterday. Is that normal in this league? one would assume that is not normal for any league. many young latin american players are fairly raw, meaning that pitchers lack command but hitters lack patience. it's been nice watching our big-bonus guys from latin america performing well so far. i miss carlos henry, who made an error a game after signing a decent-sized bonus. whatever happened to that catcher/3b (contreras) we signed for 750k?
  9. allard baird??? that guy did a terrible job in kansas city.
  10. yeah fans shouldn't cheer when their team wins
  11. i feel like lebron was commanded to become a super-villain like guys in the wwf.
  12. shouldn't the guy learn to throw strikes before being promoted?
  13. i have been pimping beliveau for a while now... the kid is making me proud
  14. i replaced napoli at the utility position with rios.
  15. and that pretty accurately reflects mlb right now, with offense down. i don't really have a problem with keeping the scoring format as it is right now.
  16. sounds to me like you need a new job... problem solved
  17. experiencing turbulence gets NC Cubs' 3rd round pick in 2012 draft NC Cubs gets experiencing turbulence's 6th round pick in 2012 draft (mike napoli trade)
  18. i remember when he was so smug about how well he was doing financially. what a complete turd.
  19. the cubs don't have to spend like drunken sailors this offseason, and the most important point is that they'd be signing one of the top handful of players in the game in pujols, not an $18m corner outfielder who's barely above average.
  20. Out of Dempster and Wells, which one is ??? and which one is uh-oh? wut
  21. don't get outbid. the red sox, yankees and phillies are unlikely to be players for pujols/fielder, the mets are a mess financially, and the cubs can outbid just about everyone else.
  22. the post-2006 cubs had a rotation of zambrano, rich hill, ???, wtf and uh oh. next year's cubs will (barring trades) have zambrano, garza, dempster and wells. that's a big difference.
  23. it is week 10. there's a good chance that pablo sandoval will be activated this week and anthony rizzo may soon be called up by the padres, so i'm looking to clear some space on my major league roster by dealing mike napoli. he's #10 in points among catchers. i'd like to move up about 3 rounds in the draft, something like a deal where i trade napoli and a 6th/7th round pick for a 3rd/4th round pick.
  24. well it's really up to the ricketts; if they definitely want to lose money on their super-expensive purchase, and become villians by reducing the cubs' payroll to the level of teams like the orioles and astros, then that's their right. but i think most owners would prefer to be successful and not hated.
  25. that wouldn't save them much money. slot money for guys drafted outside the top 10 is usually just a few grand.
