  1. This is going to be the excuse, isn't it? Hendry was quoted earlier saying the injury bug wasn't as bad as 2004, so he's clearly already throwing it out there. You have a roster littered with 30-somethings that have a long history of injuries. The rotation is full of injury/surgery guys (Zambrano/Dempster), converted catchers coming off a steap incline in innings pitched the last two years and a converted reliever whose conversion was halted and then restarted without establishing any track record of long outings, and then on top of it all you strip away your depth. Injuries are going to happen. look, this year's team wasn't very good on paper and is worse now, but the pitchers who have missed time are randy wells (usually healthy), cashner (hardly a 30-something with a long history of injuries) and garza (again, not injury prone or old). soto is young but has past bumps and bruises, marlon byrd was pretty healthy the last two years and got hit in the face with a pitched ball, jeff baker is only 30, reed johnson, soriano... even if one accepts that this team has older players who are more likely to break down, the number of injuries suffered in just two months is pretty crazy.
  2. was the injury bug this bad in 2006? this is the worst that i can remember.
  3. this is mike napoli pal, players like him don't come along every day.
  4. not a lot. but i'd take a mid-round draft pick for him. not that interested in prospects any more since all of mine might be top 50 guys at this point.
  5. well now that i have jaime garcia, shawn marcum, kyle drabek, julio teheran, shelby miller, jacob turner, john lamb, matt harvey, zach lee and randall delgado on my roster, i'm going to be pretty irate if my pitching is not above-average about 2 years from now.
  6. yeah, after seeing Lamb in the deal, I couldn't have gotten it done with you. Nice trade, btw. VMart isn't hitting THAT well for a catcher. The guy I picked up off the scrap heap today is only 27 points behind him on the season after 8 weeks. martinez has missed a couple of weeks with an injury though. fyi, i have mike napoli on my team and he's better than your catcher.
  7. i don't think it would have worked... you wouldn't have given up pineda or hosmer, your high draft picks are gone and you have no more good prospects beyond tim wheeler
  8. experiencing turbulence gets bazingas' 6th round pick in the avila/v-mart swap
  9. as long as people aren't complete morons and trade him great prospects and high draft picks for players he has no choice but to drop, his team should take a serious hit beyond this season.
  10. tim is going to have to give up a crap-ton of talent this offseason.
  11. what a letdown. i was excited to read about the school arranging to get recruits laid, that would've been a fun story.
  12. gvillecub : ryan dempster :: jeffh : jim hendry
  13. so those guys are supposed to pitch 5 innings today and then continue pitching in every close game the cubs play? should we just make them appointments with dr andrews now?
  14. maybe the H in JeffH stands for Hendry, it's actually Jim's son and is always pining for Jim to be fired he wants to spend more time with his dad.
  15. don't you think other teams would find it a bit odd that the cubs are looking to trade a productive young rookie when their season is in the toilet? even if the other teams in mlb have complete morons as GMs, the cubs shopping the type of guy they would theoretically be keeping would look pretty strange.
  16. I ask because I really don't know: Why is Campana nothing special with the bat? He's hit well above .300 in his last two minor league seasons. I've never seen him play before he came up. Is there something that suggests he's a medicore hitter? The guy has no pop whatsoever. Even Sam Fuld hit for a bit of power in the minors. But if someone has truly elite speed, I don't really want him trying to hit the ball in the air that much anyway. he strikes out too much for a guy who can't punish a pitcher's mistakes beyond hitting a single. 105 K's in 161 minor league games between last year and this one.
  17. stevens is almost 28. at some point a guy goes from "still needs some work" to "will never be good"
  18. lol @ cam greathouse's line: 2.1 ip, 1 h, 0 r, 6 bb, 6 k. he's now walked 38 batters in 43 innings (and 29 bb in 25 ip in may) after walking 11 in 44.1 ip last year. wtf
  19. i guess the ha promotion was just an injury thing. he had been pretty good at AA. clevenger should be at AAA (or backing up in the big leagues), but it's better to have him playing most days at tennessee and castillo playing most days at iowa.
  20. because he's a highly successful coach and he figured that his success would cause people to overlook his missteps.
  21. also because one guy with a fringy bat is hitting in the majors, every guy with a fringy bat will hit in the majors.
  22. cbs fantasy website sucks. because they didn't have a guy in their system who had been pitching in the minor leagues for like 3 years, i couldn't add him as a minor leaguer and had to wait til monday; by then, adam had traded and was looking to add more minor leaguers, so he got the guy ahead of me on the waiver wire.
  23. i'll gladly continue my descent toward the bottom of the standings.
  24. Strained right elbow. Cubs don't feel it's serious enough to bring him to Chicago to see the docs here. thanks... though i don't like the idea that a guy who doubled over in pain after throwing a pitch is diagnosed as "no big deal." hopefully they at least tossed him in an mri machine. I know. I hate it when they use divination to diagnose somebody. Stupid Cobs! If only MRIs existed outside of Chicago...
  25. brett butler hit .338 with a .447 obp in the minor leagues, and hit 11 home runs. he struck out 141 times in 367 games. campana has hit .303 with a .359 obp in the minor leagues, and hit 0 home runs. he has struck out 203 times in 312 games. it's quite obvious that campana has nowhere near the contact skills, eye or hitting tool that butler had, and also doesn't have any pop whatsoever.
