must... not.... make... mark chmura... joke but seriously, good guy and hopefully he is a success in the nfl. hopefully it leads her classmates being more accepting of her and her disability.
or they can just trade him to a team with money at the deadline and that team will only have to pay like $3-4m this year. in your plan they're trading him plus a back-of-the-rotation guy with some value for a useless relief pitcher, a bad pitching prospect (soon-to-be 28 year old jeff stevens, batting practice pitcher casey coleman, fungible 26 year old reliever scott maine or 27 year old who can't strike anyone out, justin berg), plus tyler colvin, who was just bounced down to the minors.
yeah. i will also say that part of the reason i traded halladay was that i knew he'd be an 800 point or so pitcher, and i knew that especially good pitchers - halladay, lincecum, felix hernandez - amass huge points and are hard for top-tier teams in our league to keep. so i figured there was a decent chance of me getting a stud pitcher again this offseason. i wouldn't have made the trade i did if a guy like halladay projected to get "only" 600 points and fewer of those top pitchers would be available after this season.
the yankees gave him a bigger contract later in his career. the rangers' problem was not understanding the value of their asset and giving the yankees a very valuable player at a discount price in a salary dump.
i'm sure it's a coincidence that tim is raising this issue like a week after trading for roy halladay. to even things out, just make hitter points worth more. :-)
Jupiter won 2-1 in the bottom of the 23rd. i think it's funny that clearwater got four scoreless innings from two position players (though one of them was joe savery, who was drafted as a pitcher and made it to AAA before flaming out), then randomly put another pitcher into the game and he gave up a run. what were they holding that pitcher back for? according to his game log he threw one inning the previous day but otherwise hadn't pitched since may 17th. looks to me like jupiter made it through the game without using a position player or a starter, which is impressive. larussa or dusty would've been out of bullpen arms by the 10th inning.
why is it safe to say that? he gave them 26.7 WAR in three seasons (using fangraphs numbers). his last season with seattle he posted a 9.6 WAR, so yes his average WAR was down slightly from his final year in seattle (which had been his best year to that point). the guy led the league in WAR 4 times during that contract and won the MVP three times. unless you had completely unrealistic expectations for him, like he was going to play like steroids-era bonds for 10 consecutive years, the contract was not an unreasonable one. or are you arguing that because the rangers deemed him "not worth it" 3 years into the deal, then he was a bust? i guess if you are using that line of logic then you probably think the island of manhattan is pretty worthless, since native americans accepted like $25 worth of beads and [expletive] for it during the 17th century.
szczur was 3-5 (all singles) with a SB and now has 10 SB in his last 10 games. gaub's command is still not good, but he's much less of a disaster than last year and boy he misses a lot of bats. kind of hoping he gets a chance with the big club to see how he translates to the big leagues. love the K ability and think he can pitch around the walks - big question for me is whether his command will be so poor that he'll miss badly within the strike zone and get battered a la jeff samardzija. gaub gave up few hits in lower levels but has been more hittable the last year-plus at iowa.
well, except for the return they got for him. he's an elite SP pitcher and all they really got was carlos gomez (the rest of those guys have done almost nothing at the big league level). this isn't really 20/20 hindsight either; a lot of people thought they should have gotten a better return.
as for your question, probably when he's a lot older than 21 years old. he's missed a fair amount of time to injury and is still playing at AA as a 21 year old, which means he's very young for the level. and he's struck out 10 times in 41 games. the difference seems to be that other prospects (ha, lemahieu, starlin castro) have done good things with their plus contact skills, while vitters seems to have them act as a negative. his K rate is way down from previous years and his power is up a little from last season. hopefully there is some progression here.
ha continues to show off the good contact skills, as he's only struck out once in 7 games at AA and also drew his first AA walk tonight. and gunned down a baserunner from the OF.
and if you look at the top of the list, how many teams are disappointed with the production they got for their dollar? the yankees probably will be for ARod Part II; nobody should've been for the previous monster contract. jeter? meh... his defense is mostly lousy, but it's the yankees and he was still very good through the entire life of that contract. jury is still out on mauer. teixeira and sabathia contracts look fine. manny probably wasn't worth $20m a year, but just because his glove was awful... offensively they got what they were paying for. tulo and agonz - who knows. miggy cabrera appears well on his way to earning that contract. if you narrow it down to elite players things don't really look that bad.
i'll accept that blame. in happier news, mcnutt has salvaged a decent outing and more importantly seems to be upping that pitch count. 5 ip, 5 h, 4 r, 3 er, 1 bb, 4 k, 1 hr, 1 wp, 1 hbp, 6 go/4 fo, 75 pitches/48 strikes. not bad.
mcnutt has stunk - 3 ip, 4 h, 4 r, 3 er, 1 bb, 2 k, 1 hr, 1 hbp, 1 wp. beeler has been very good, on the other hand - perfect through 4 ip with 2 K's. kurcz - 4 ip, 2 h, 1 er, 1 bb, 5 k.
