  1. yeah psu seems to inexplicably give illinois problems, usually in low-scoring brickfests. even when psu is bad (usually) and illinois is pretty good (also usually)
  2. and the eagles still have an offensive line coach serving as a defensive coordinator, great job dickheads.
  3. i read an article, i think it may have been on BP, suggesting that this might be prince's best course of action, since the big market clubs either don't have a need at 1b or haven't shown much interest. maybe by next offseason, the dodgers have sorted out their financial issues and some other big market clubs are looking for a 1b or dh. he can probably get close to $25m on a one year contract so as long as he doesn't have a bad year, he could still be looking at a nice long-term payday.
  4. Trout will be on the cover of the BA handbook so I have to assume he will be in one of the top 3 spots. I'll guess that their consensus top 5 is harper, trout, moore, darvish, profar
  5. actually, doc walker doesn't know what herpes is. john thompson may or may not know what herpes is.
  6. yeah no difference at all between the two players and their situations.
  7. I'm aware he's at 267 just trying to say that's probably the main reason he's sticking around. it's not Thanks Jamie, glad you could stop by. look, he's pitched in philly (where i lived close to) for 5 years when he was at an advanced age, and he said in interviews that he didn't care about benchmarks but kept playing because he enjoyed it and felt like he had something to offer the phillies. you can choose not to believe him, but considering that he'd likely have to be a starting pitcher for at least 3 more seasons to reach 300 wins, i'd say he's just doing it because he still likes to play.
  8. It's an untenable situation, expecting another organization to handle a player in a manner consistent with the wishes of the organization who will own that player at the end of the year. you can get by for a month or so, like was done with bonderman, but I can't think of a time that a guy played most of a season with another org after being traded. and for good reason, because that would be silly.

  10. I just ordered the BA prospect handbook. I have every issue going back to the first one in 2001. On the cover of that one is our old friend Corey Patterson. Corey was #1 on two of the editors' lists; the third list rated him #3 behind josh hamilton and ben sheets. Corey did have a better career than 2 of their "elite eight" - ryan anderson (the space needle) and sean burroughs. He hasn't quite been as good as josh beckett, sheets, hamilton or sabathia. Other top 50 prospects ranked behind Corey - ichiro, oswalt, Adam Dunn, soriano, pujols, Rollins, peavy, miggy cabrera and carl Kudos to Corey for posting a better WAR than drew henson, jr house and joe borchard.
  11. This is mentioned all the time, but does this ever happen? Isn't that what the Indians did with Pomerantz in the Ubaldo trade? Now there's a trade that could look very, very bad for the Indians in a few years time. Wasn't that only like a month or so? I don't ever recall a guy being shelved for six months to be a PTBNL. i know bonderman was the ptbnl in a 3-way deal (involving the a's and tigers, plus some other team) in 2002, but the deal went down in early july and he had signed in mid to late august the previous year. looking at his minor league stats, i can only assume that he continued to pitch with the a's organization and then changed hands when he officially became part of the deal, because he threw 144 innings with the a's a-ball affiliate and then made just 2 starts with the tigers' affiliate. i have a hard time believing that the cubs would want a guy from the 2011 draft in february, considering that he'd have to sit out most of the season or hope that the other organization is willing to handle him properly for a few months.
  12. assuming that baseball america hasn't changed its policy of considering every rookie-eligible player to be a prospect, where do you think they'd rank darvish? one would assume that these names will be among their top 10: bryce harper mike trout matt moore jurickson profar julio teheran then some other highly-rated guys: shelby miller, jesus montero, jameson taillon, manny machado, some of the guys drafted early in 2011 (bauer, bundy, cole, rendon)
  13. Good move for Rangers, I think. If you take the entirety of the contract and posting fee, you get 6/111 - which is $18.5 mil per year. Darvish could definitely bomb, but if he doesn't the Rangers are getting a good bargain. there's a large gulf between "rangers getting a bargain" and "darvish could definitely bomb." as it is, $18.5m/year is just less than the going rate for elite SP (which seems to be in the $20-25m range, given the AAV of contracts given to sabathia, cliff lee, santana and halladay). to be a good bargain he'll have to be an ace; to even be worth his contract he'll have to produce at something like greinke/cj wilson/hamels/matt cain levels.
  14. if people don't want to be in the league they should be able to leave. there are plenty of knowledgeable baseball fans on nsbb who could take over a team, i think. wasn't GR (mariner's revenge) interested in a spot last year, the one that i ended up filling? we could ask him if he's still interested in joining. guess it's up to the commissioner (is that tim now?)
  15. HAHAHAHAHA yeah i found that line hilarious too.
  16. looking back in the thread now I apparently missed several pages where y'all were talking about it. I'm literally flabbergasted at the tackiness. the only thing left to do after constructing that home run monstrosity is to open a nightclub called "the birdcage" beyond the RF wall.
  17. I was just about to post a thread today asking if Vineline was worth getting. I haven't seen an issue since I was like 12, but I figure it might be worth it for some coverage of the farm system and cool pictures and stuff like that. certainly a better read than cubs anal
  18. yeah the apple was just a boring apple that popped up with the words "home run" beneath it. the marlins' thing has multiple animals flying/jumping around plus enough blinking lights to trigger an epileptic episode. let's compare: http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.282288!/img/httpImage/image.jpg http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/739480/marlins.gif
  19. when are we going to work on filling this vacancy? also, is everyone else who was in the league last year committed for this season?
  20. man i really like the giants at +2.5
  21. seems like there are pretty wide variations with how castillo is regarded.
  22. is that going to be the tackiest thing ever in a baseball stadium?
  23. the major downside being that the colin cowherds of the world would deride people for leaving their mom's basements only spend the whole time at the game looking at their ipad or smartphone.
