no, his roster legitimately sucks ass. he basically has no good young exempt players, josh hamilton is his best offensive player and tim hudson his best pitcher. his prospects aren't very good either. i wasn't thrilled with my roster last year, but i was able to acquire halliday before the draft, had starlin castro, gaby sanchez, austin jackson and jaime garcia as exempt players, and had very good prospects like mike trout and julio teheran. i would assume that with that roster, it's going to be really hard to compete this year without hitting the lottery on a number of mid to late round picks. while i took some abuse for throwing in the towel in may, i was able to turn halladay into shelby miller, jacob turner, jason kipnis, a first round pick and a major league pitcher who turned into a joke (matusz). i added jake peavy via waivers and turned him into paul goldschmidt and a pick, dealt victor martinez for alex avila, john lamb (who blew out his elbow like 4 days later) and a pick, got a third round pick for mike napoli, got a fourth rounder for markakis and pavano, and a sixth rounder for ichiro. a lot of it is fairly minor, but someone like goldschmidt may be quite valuable if he can put up league-average 1B numbers... that's four years of solid production without having to use keeper points. same reason i wanted kipnis in the halladay deal. as for all the draft picks, guys like napoli, kimbrel, cj wilson, and howie kendrick went in that round. obviously there were some busts, but the point is that there can be good values available in the mid rounds, so if you can draft some players this year and spin them off for picks before the trade deadline, you can really make a stockpile of picks. at one stage i had two first rounders, two 3rds, two 4ths, two 6ths and two 7ths. those can be used to improve your team the next offseason, either by trading for established stars (i used a first and a second to acquire halladay and cliff lee) or just by advancing your draft position so that you end up with more 6th/7th round guys and fewer 10th/11th rounders. anyway, that's how i went about rebuilding. take it with a grain of salt since i finished last in 2011, but i think my team looks a lot more promising for this year.
