Another club with interest in Overbay is Boston, which could have pitching to spare after acquiring Josh Beckett from the Marlins. One rumor circulating has the Red Sox offering right-hander Matt Clement to the Brewers for Overbay.

The Brewers took a run at Clement on the free agent market last winter before he signed with the Red Sox for three years and $25.5 million. Overbay made $446,000 last season and is in line for a big raise through salary arbitration, but the Brewers would have a bigger payroll bump in acquiring Clement, who went 13-6 with a 4.57 ERA in 32 games for Boston.

Melvin, who has said he would only trade Overbay in the right deal, did not indicate if he'd be interested in such a swap but noted the Red Sox might be after Chicago White Sox free agent first baseman Paul Konerko. After dealing for Philadelphia's Jim Thome, it is not known if Chicago will try to keep Konerko.

Yeah, I heard about that deal. I don't like it for the Brewers. Clement's a solid starter, but they should be able to get more than a 30+ year old #3 starter for one of the best values in baseball. They could just as soon sign a comparable starter thru freeagency (Weaver, Byrd, etc) and get a couple players with huge upsides for Overbay.

Clement would matchup well against a team like the Cubs. His biggest problem is he walks people. But the Cubs don't let guys with control problems walk them. He could easily avoid the big 30 pitch innings and scores of 3-2 counts against the Cubs, allowing him to go deeper into games than he would against a team with a decent approach at the plate.

I think this deal actually makes sense for the brewers....they have 2 lefties in the rotation now with Capuano and Davis. Clement would fit nicely as a 3rd starter for them. Doug Melvin is a frugal GM and I dont see the brewers adding another big contract for a pitcher.
