I'd be a lot happier to get Mabry if he didn't bat lefty. If RH-batting Murton starts slowly, it's dangerous to have a veteran LH-batting OF option waiting in the wings. It could be another Holla/Dubois situation.

I don't think our bench can be Dusty proofed other than undeniable success. Murton needs to deliver right out of the gate if he wants to be the everyday starter in LF.

I agree, we can't completely Dusty-proof the bench, but not having a veteran LH-batting 4th OF is still a worthy goal.

Mabry is a left hand bat with power and a career 325 OBP , he can play first, third, and outfield. He can play all the postions well and has a strong arm from the outfield. Another added bonus is that he knows the NL central well. He would be a soild sign to are bench

Mabry- first,third,outfield

Hairston- second, outfield

Perez-Infield

Blanco-Catcher

GreenBerg if he gets rostered along with Sing could compete for spots as backup outfielder.

he always hit a home run when he subbed for McGwire (or so it seems).

by that rationale, DLee will start, get maybe 1 AB and the other 450 ABs will go to Mabry :)

I like the possibilities of getting a true bench player like Mabry. Go for it!

He's nothing special, if what makes him appealing to fans is that it removes Macias from the roster or his ability to play several positions moreso than his production, then I wonder how productive was he?

Like CP mentioned Sweeney would look great in this role, might've cost more, but would've brought more production.

Wouldn't Sweeney replace what Holla should have been, while Mabry would be more of a Macias replacement?

Sweeney would look fantastic coming off the Cubs bench. Along with Saenz.

what about jacob cruz? maybe the cubs will sign both of them and have 2 good lefty pinch hitters. hopefully one of them can play 3b along with lf & 1st.

My personal preference is Sweeney, but whatever. Does it bother anyone that Mabry had a sub-300 OBP in nearly 250 AB's last year?

It bothers me seeing as a PH only point and purpose is to get on base. I put my vote in the Sweeney hat, the man had a filthy OBP last year. Its for sure one area where OBP is the defining statistic. Typical Cubs, though.

Ideally, yes. But, Mabry would likely serve as the 4th OF'er and 1st PH option off the bench. The role Mabry would likely serve is the ideal role for someone like Sweeney.

BRING BACK HOLLA'

*crickets*

I would love to have Holla as our 4th OF off of the bench, and our 1st pinch hitter. Unfortunately, this concept escapes our oh-so-great manager, and he wouldn't be used in the purpose that he is absolutely ideal for.
