It's still very early. Many baseball people think it could be the winter meetings next month before anything significant gets done.

Every year, a group of guys gets signed prior to the arbitration deadline. These are the A-listers for whom teams don't mind giving up draft compensation. Then there's a couple guys who are all but signed, but don't officially sign until after the arbitration deadline, when the acquiring team knows the players' old team doesn't want to offer arbitration. And then the floodgates open for the good guys whose value might increase a bit when no compensation is involved. And finally, the scrubs like Burnitz and the comfortable veterans like Maddux wait until late winter.

Although there is no ARod or Vladdy out there this year, I'd have to guess a couple guys could sign before the arby deadline (Dec. 7 ?). My guess is Burnett is one of those guys who will sign after the deadline, since many teams will assume Florida won't risk offering arbitration and being stuck with a big salary for a guy who is no guarantee to finish 2006 healthy.

I'm still a firm believer Burnett ends up in Toronto. The way that team can compete in AL East is to build a team around pitching. With Halladay at the front, and Burnett plus the young starters they have, they might end up with the best pitching in that division.

I also think he will not be signed until after the Arbitration deadline.

I hate to say it....but AJ will end up in Seattle. Toronto doesn't have the resources to sign Burnett. So i see Tor signing a decent bat, instead.

I think you should re-evaluate Toronto. They have lots of money to spend this offseason.

They aren't saying they want to spend it on pitching, though. The reports I have read said they are real interested in Burnett and Ryan, but they feel comfortable with the pitching they have and will focus their energy on offense rather than bidding wars.
