Can anyone realistically see Hendry getting Dunn over Kearns? I can't. Hendry loves Kearns. Hendry would also probably be paying low for Kearns because he had an up and down season last year. I just don't see Dunn as someone Hendry will go after seroiusly. I can definitely see Hendry going after Kearns though.

I agree. I can't see Hendry pulling the trigger on a deal for Dunn, I don't have any specific reason. Kearns will come much cheaper.

But he'll come cheaper because he's not that good.

Agreed.

That said, Dunn will likely get big money in arbitration in a few weeks and the Reds always like to trim that payroll (Eric Milton aside). If they think Kearns can come back to earlier success, they may want to keep him and deal the more expensive player in Dunn.

Obviously, their first choice to trade for those very reasons is probably Junior.

We need another left handed hitter in the lineup, especially if we're going to trade Walker and Patterson. Dusty is a big fan of alternating righties and lefties in the lineup.

If you narrow your need down to an impact, left-handed, corner-outfield bat, your list is going to be very short. You have to accept a RH alternative.

The Reds need pitching and to get Dunn, I'd offer them lots.

I would offer them two of this group: Williams, Hill, Mitre.

One of this group: Wellemeyer, Leicester, Novoa, and Wuertz.

One of this group: Gallagher, Pinto, Brownlie, Guzman, Marmol, and Nolasco.

I'd also be willing to throw in Corey Patterson if needed to complete the deal.

I'd consider letting them have Murton as well, as I don't think either Murton or Dunn can play left, so Murton would have to be moved in another deal if we get Dunn.

That's too much, IMO. You're basically letting them rebuild their crappy rotation. There a scenario there where the Reds end up with:

Williams

Hill

Novoa

Guzman

You're giving them 3 rotation ready arms and a setup guy. I don't think Dunn is worth allowing Cinci to go from abysmal to mediocre pitching.

I'd take Guzman and Novoa off that list.

Assume they choose those guys, Williams is a number 4-5 guy, Hill could be Barry Zito but he could be a bust, Novoa is a good, but not great bullpen guy, and Guzman is the risky injury pick who could be an ace or could be a bust. You're right in that if everything worked out for them, the Reds would have one helluva haul from the deal...on the other hand they could end up with Williams, an injured prospect who never pans out, and two bullpen arms for a great hitter.

None of the players could we not do without. Williams has become superfluous for the team. Hill and Guzman might fit into the plans down the road, but who really knows? Novoa is a useful arm in the pen, but we could probably sign a FA who could do just as well or trade Walker for an arm that would do just as well. Pencil Dunn in between Lee and Ramirez with Furcal at the top of the order and we'd have one of the most feared line-ups in the NL.

If the Reds required the Cubs to take on Milton's contract to get Dunn, do they do it?

Depends on what else the Cubs would have to surrender to get him.

So who plays RF with Dunn and Murton on the team, but not Kearns? My impression is that the Cubs don't think Murton has the arm for RF, I don't know what they think about Dunn's arm. Maybe Hendry wants a package deal where we get Dunn and Kearns, and the Reds get Murton.

My guess is that you'd deal Murton or Patterson for a RF bat or sign Juan Encarnacion or someone of that ilk.

Dunn + Milton for Jerome Williams and Rich Hill? Jerome Williams replaces Milton (and probably does a lot better job), and Hal McCoy for the Dayton Daily News has often suggested that the Reds love Rich Hill.

The Cubs would have to give alot more than that.

You're from the area....do you really think that's all it would take as long as the Cubs pick up all the cash?

I don't know. The Reds would be getting out from under about 20 million just for next year.

If we get Dunn and Hendry views Dunn's defense as suitable only for LF that means Murton is as good as gone.

I agree. That's why I think Murton would be in the package for Dunn.

I doubt it would be. But also, Milton is pretty much the most hated man in Cincy. And Marty Brenneman complains often about Adam Dunn, plus a lot of the local sports talk isn't all that thrilled with Dunn. If management feels the same as those 2, and if they also share the same love for Rich Hill that Hal McCoy does, I think it would be enough. But I doubt management feels the same as the announcers, fans, and sportswriters.

I wish Hal McCoy was the GM of the team.

And Adam Dunn coming to the Cubs is probably the only thing that could get me excited about this season.

But I doubt it will happen. Kearns coming to the Cubs would be a much safer bet.

That's what I'm thinking too. As much as I'd like to see Cedeno and Murton start, if Hendry can get good value for them and get players that Dusty will actually want to start then Ronny and Matty must go!

I'm so sick of the safe bets. I want an impact bat like Dunn and no compromises.
