Beyond Furcal and Pierre, Jim Hendry is interested in Kansas City pitcher Mike MacDougal, and Reds outfielders Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns.

Get-R-Dunn Mr. Hendry!

Would you trade Z for Dunn Hoops?

Now that I think about it....what if Hendry gets Pierre and then trades Pie and some top pitching prospects to the Reds for Dunn?

He better lock Pierre up long term without Pie waiting in the wings. BTW can Dunn play RF? I thought he was not defensively gifted?

Maybe Murton would be in the package to Cincy for Dunn?

I like Dunn, but the money and defense likely means Kearns is the more viable target, IMO.

I've heard Dunn is defenisvely challenged and I agree that Hendry would lock up Pierre long term first. Maybe Murton would be one of the players used in the trade for Dunn?

Adam Dunn? Yes please. I'll take two. Wait, that's not possible? It should be.

I wouldn't cry if we acquired Kearns instead, but IMO, if we're going to be playing Murton and Cedeno, we don't need another project on the team. Between Kearns, Murton, and Cedeno, someone is likely to tank. We have the money to pay for a sure thing in the OF and we should do it (Dunn).

I thought the same thing about Murton being one of the guys moved. I also agree with all that said Kearns may be the target Hendry settles for. What if Hendry gets both?

No, I completely agree with your assesment of Kearns. He's no guarantee to produce. Given how our window of opportunity is not as wide open as it was 2 years ago, I'd rather not take on a reclamation project. I'd rather have close to guaranteed production.

Dunn is a horrible defender, however he is a offensive monster. I doubt the Cubs obtain him, but I believe JH is leaving as many options open as possible as all GM's should.

As would I. How old is Kearns?

He'll be 26 in May.

Well....he had faith that Barrett would get better and he was about that age so if Hendry is willing to bet his job on a player like Kearns I suppose he may think he will break out too.

He's not that bad (about 4-5 errors/season). He has decent range for a monster, too.

One of the things about Kearns that I don't like is that he bats righty. I don't ever think it should be a deal-breaker, but with Todd Walker likely gone, there is/ doesn't look to be, anybody with pop from the left side of the plate.

Obviously, a good player is a good player, but I think any target will likely be a lefty.

If Hendry gets both they are set at the corners. Kearns and Murton look to have similar skill sets, don't they? Kearns' success has come when his BABIP is high and that's the same with Murton in his short time up.

Murton is still a little younger than Kearns, Kearns is a better defender, Kearns is a little pricier, no? It's an interesting situation. There was a story a couple of days ago in a Cincy paper that said the off-season focus was on trading one of the four outfielders.

absolutely insane idea :D

Reds trade: Austin Kearns, Adam Dunn, and Ken Griffey Jr.

Cubs trade: Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston Jr., Rich Hill, and Sergio Mitre

(and i'd throw in a decent pitching prospect if I had too)

No money exchanges hands, Cubs take on Griffey's 06-08 contract ($12.5 million per), Reds keep the deferred money (which, as I believe, the Reds couldn't shed anyway under MLB rules)

Here's an estimate of the money above

Reds package: $47.5 ($37.5 Griffey, $6 Dunn, $1 Kearns)

Cubs package: $5.8 ($3 Patterson, $2 Hairston, $.5 Mitre, $.3 Hill)

So, we esentially save Cincy 41 million plus over the next 3 seasons (what they owe Griffey, plus what Dunn and Kearns would make next season). They get two starters to plug into their rotation right now, a replacement for Griffey in center, and a very versitile Hairston, who I'd wager you could plug into 2B for them.

Cubs get one of the most lethal hitters in the game, one heck of a project in Kearns, and one heck of a gamble in Griffey.

As far as next season money goes, we spend right at 20 million. Plenty of cash left to get Furcal for shortstop, and another arm for the bullpen.

In this scenario, you pencil Dunn into right field, Griffey into center, and let Kearns/Murton fight it out for left.

Now...how is THIS for a lineup?

Furcal

Walker

Lee

Dunn

Ramirez

Griffey

Murton/Kearns

Barrett

Even if making this move keeps us from signing another starting pitcher, i'm willing to chance winding up with Glendon Rusch as the 5th starter if someone goes down, if it gets me that potent of a lineup.

I don't know why Cincinatti would trade all 3 to the same team. They're likely to get maximum value by dealing them individually.

And as far as Kearns goes, I'd put him in the Jones/Encarnacion group of players that would be a final, fallback option. I'm not convinced he's going to be anything special based on one season with a high BABIP.

I think you would have to include Pie and/or Murton and another pitching prospect.

The Reds need pitching and to get Dunn, I'd offer them lots.

I would offer them two of this group: Williams, Hill, Mitre.

One of this group: Wellemeyer, Leicester, Novoa, and Wuertz.

One of this group: Gallagher, Pinto, Brownlie, Guzman, Marmol, and Nolasco.

I'd also be willing to throw in Corey Patterson if needed to complete the deal.

I'd consider letting them have Murton as well, as I don't think either Murton or Dunn can play left, so Murton would have to be moved in another deal if we get Dunn.

Can anyone realistically see Hendry getting Dunn over Kearns? I can't. Hendry loves Kearns. Hendry would also probably be paying low for Kearns because he had an up and down season last year. I just don't see Dunn as someone Hendry will go after seroiusly. I can definitely see Hendry going after Kearns though.

That's too much, IMO. You're basically letting them rebuild their crappy rotation. There a scenario there where the Reds end up with:

Williams

Hill

Novoa

Guzman

You're giving them 3 rotation ready arms and a setup guy. I don't think Dunn is worth allowing Cinci to go from abysmal to mediocre pitching.

I'd take Guzman and Novoa off that list.

I agree. I can't see Hendry pulling the trigger on a deal for Dunn, I don't have any specific reason. Kearns will come much cheaper.
