According to several East coast papers I've read this morning, Pat Gillick may begin to shake up the Phillies as early as this week at the GM meetings.

While everyone and their mother knows Gillick will be desperate to deal Jim Thome to an AL club, this may take time because of Thome's no trade clause, his contract money and teams waiting to see what happens with Konerko in free agency as well as Sweeney and Delgado in possible trades.

But, the most interesting asepct of "shake up" might be related to what he decides to do with Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell, if anything. The papers I read imply he could trade Burrell while his value is sky high, or Abreu just to get him out of Philly due to lingering questions about his attitude and health. Any trade could involve a third team as Gillick wants to upgrade pitching as well as get a left-handed platoon partner for David Bell.

We have all thought that either Burrell or Abreu could be a big plus for our OF. I think we have all rightfully given the edge to Abreu based on lefty bat and playing RF. Abreu would make me forget about Giles in a hurry.

What are the latest 2-team or 3-team trade ideas to land Abreu? Recall, before the coronation of Billy Beane to genius GM status, many believed Gillick to be the best and shrewdest GM in baseball with his work with Toronto, Baltimore and Seattle.

I suppose you could deal:

-Pinto, Mitre and Walker to Texas, send Soriano to Philly and get Abreu

...that's all I can think of, and I think that deal wouldn't work. Hmm. How about:

How about Pinto and Mitre to San Diego for Kelsko and Klesko and Walker for Abreu?

Pinto, Ryu, Patterson, and Mitre for Abreu and Michaels.

Pie for Abreu and Michaels.

*edit*

I'm just throwing crap against a wall. I don't know that any of these deals are realistic, and I'd not deal Pie for Abreu and Michaels. Just throwing it out there.

Depending what is required, I would opt for Burrell over Abreu if it saves a lot of top prospects. He also has the advantage of age.

He's going to be a high risk/high reward guy, though. He should be peaking soon, as he entering prime age, but has beeen inconsistent. Maybe a change of scenery would do him some good.

He's making a lot of money though. What would you give up for Burrell?

I like the 3rd deal listed above. It would solve CF, RF, aand leadoff if we don't get Furcal. Also, it solve the problem of "what to do about Patterson?"

I don't even know if that would get it done, but that would be my preferred deal of the ones I listed. I think maybe you'd have to include Hill or Nolasco.

I think one of the best ways for the Cubs to get in on this is to help facilitate the moving of Thome for the Phillies. With the cash the Cubs have to play with, that might be a route to go.

On the other hand, what about this scenario.

Cubs get: Abreu and Castillo

Phillies get Lowell, Williams, and Patterson and another prospect from the Cubs.

Marlins get Walker, Bell, Nolasco, and Padilla.

The Cubs get two premier players. The Phillies move some salary and replace Bell with Lowell. The Marlins move some salary and pick up a pitcher.

I don't think this deal has a chance, but it was something I could throw out there. As I look more closely at it, I'll try to come up with a better scenario.

I really think the best deal for Philly would be to trade Bell, Abreu, and Padilla to Texas for Blalock and Mench.

Burrell please. He doesn't have Abreu's arm, but Abreu is a joke in the field otherwise (yes, i know some idiots gave him a GG). His salary is large, but it's comparable to what we'd have to pay Giles (for decreasing production as he ages).

How about this one:

Cubs get Abreu.

Phillies get Mark Redmond, Rob Macowiak, and Craig Wilson.

Pirates get Thome and Padilla and 2 million from the Cubs in 2006, and 7 million from the Phillies (3.5 in 2007 and 3.5 in 2008)

The Phils give up two great offensive players and a quality SP and get a similar SP, and two borderline starters in return, plus they pay money. I don't think that's a very good deal at all.

Does Thome have a NTC? Why would Pittsburgh give up 3 of their "better" players for a giant injury risk.

How about this three-way deal?

Cubs get Abreu

Phillies get Blalock and Williams

Rangers get Thome, Padilla, and Bell along with 6 million from the Cubs (2 2006-2008) and 4 million from the Phillies (2 per year 2007-2008)

Thome would give Pittsburg a big bat. My guess is Macowiak will be non-tendered. He'll be due nearly 3 million in arbitration and Pitt sees him as a utility player. Redmond is rumored to being shopped as it is. They picked up his option in order to shop him from what I've read. Right now, they may be looking at having five lefties in the rotation. Padilla would give them a starter to replace Redmond.

I doubt the deal would work, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Yeah, Abreu also had some off the field issues that may have hurt him (not his fault).

look at how BABIP is trending. Burrell's isn't that out of wack...maybe a tad high, but not ridiculous like Murton's.

IMO opinion Abreu is a perfect fit. I wouldn't mind Burrell as long as he could play RF.

How about:

Baldelli to Philly

Hill, Mitre and Wellemeyer to TB

Abreu to Cubs (we pick up all his salary

I'd also like to go after Wells from Toronto to cure the CF woes. If Pie and Murton do turn out to be a good players it would give the Cubs good choices to make instead of having be reactive.

I think Wells might be overvalued. We'd be better served trying to extract Michaels from Philly, or maybe Mench from Texas.

Did I miss something in this deal or are the Cubs getting Abreu and giving up only $2 million? I'll go for that deal any day.

that's pretty far fetched anyways given the Pirates budget.

I think you are being a bit hard on Burrell. His splits aren't terrible on the road and his BABIP is only slightly above Abreu's. I don't think he would have any trouble hitting for power at Wrigley. In addition, he is a power hitter entering his prime. His 2004 is just as likely if not more likely to be a fluke than his 2005.

I would try to hang on to Pinto if I were the Cubs.
