I don't understand why the Cubs love to waste millions of dollars on mediocre reserves when they could just play talented youngins like Sing for far less and probably equal production. It isn't just the Cubs that are guilty of this and it blows my mind.

I also thought that Sing could be useful as a backup at some point.

The rotoworld writeup on AZL prospects noted that he was available.

Brandon Sing - 1B Cubs - Age 25

.246/.338/.464, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 24/10 K/BB, 1 SB in 69 AB

.276/.404/.538, 26 HR, 71 RBI, 110/91 K/BB, 2 SB in 409 AB for Double-A West Tenn

Sing also hit .270/.399/.571 for Single-A Daytona in 2004. It’s true he’s always been old for his leagues, but he has to be taken seriously after putting up those lines in back-to-back years. He’ll be available in the Rule 5 draft to anyone that wants him. There are plenty of American League teams that could use him, even if it’s just to play against left-handers.

I'm sure that Brandon's sub-par performance in the Arizona Fall League didn't help his cause. I like Brandon but the Cubs had to make a decision at first base and they chose Dopirak over him. You can't protect everybody in the farm system and still keep the core big leaguers.

It's a numbers game. I think the Cubs did the right thing. Having said that, I fully expect Sing and Russ Rohlicek to be selected in the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

As expected, both cleared. Having both gone through free agency or waivers already, when anybody could have had them just for 40-man without the 25-man obligation, it was pretty obvious both should clear Rule 5. But nice to see they did.
