Let's put it this way - they scored only 70 more runs than Cincy, without having to waste a spot having a pitcher hit, with Posada over LaRue, with Giambi over Casey, with Sheffield over Kearns & ARod over Randa. The Reds have an edge in CF with Griffey, no doubt, but Dunn's edge on Matsui isn't huge.

It just seems to me that the Yankees have the talent to make a run at 1000 runs and they ended up 115 short of that.

I don't have as much faith in the Yankees talent. It's mostly old. Remember, Giambi sucked for about 2 months. And Tino played a lot of first. They didn't discover the upgrade to Cano right away, Williams is awful in CF. They Yankees are the only team in baseball with a worst OPS in the CF position than the Cubs were. Sheffield isn't the Sheffield of old. Posada is no star, and the Yankees were 14th in all of baseball in terms of catcher OPS, while Cincy was 1st. They had no true DH all season because they really have about 4 DH. The NYY were 4th in SS OPS, but Cincy was 6th. Cincy was 4th in LF OPS, the NYY were 19th. Hideki isn't Dunn, or even close.

And, they have absolutely no good bench players, none.

I think if you were expecting more out of NYY then you weren't really paying attention to the NYY. I don't mean that as an insult. Mike Francesa of Mike and the Mad Dog, said in the middle of the season:

"Nobody thought this team would fail to win 100 games, nobody! Not one person thought they'd win less than 100."

I don't know what he was talking about. I thought they'd be a little worse than they actually ended up. I guess we're all wrong.

Giambi, Jeter, A-Rod, Matsui and Sheffield hit a combined .301/.398/.518 in 3390 PA, so they definitely weren't the problem. The Yankees basically gave 53% of their PAs to Gary Sheffield (career .297/.399/.527). Wise move.

The trouble is that the Yankees gave 3015 PA to other guys. And they hit a combined .249/.306/.378. That's giving away 47% of their PAs to Adam Everett (career .253/.305/.365). Stupid.

So that's why the Yankees didn't score so many runs. An absolute lack of depth to compliment a top five that's sensational.

I was hoping for Yankees not to make the playoffs. That way, Torre would have an even bigger chance of getting the pink slip. There's stilll a pretty good chance IMO, but its not as big. I will still keep the faith. *changes avator (thanks Aramisfan)

As far as the topic goes, I don't think the Boss can blow the team up. I say this because the market is thin, and no one would want what he has to trade, unless he chooses to unload ARod.

I just don't think the circumstances allow a overhaul, at least one that makes the team better.
