Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh.......I can't take the Bobby Abreu lovefest on this board any more.

I think your're selling yourself a bit short on Abreu. He'll be available for the right price. Abreu has great fantasy stats, the statgeeks will love his OBP and OPS, but when the game is on the line, he crumbles and goes into a shell. I'd rather not have my cleanup hitter that I'm paying $9MM+ a year looking for walks when the game is on the line.

How do I know this, because I live outside of PHL and watch the Phillies on a day to day basis. Check out Abreu's stats in the second half of the season too. A sign of things to come? Perhaps. Maybe maybe not. But, Abreu time and time again in game critical situations is not the man. For what the Phillies are paying him, he's way overrated.

Abreu for the season: .286/.405/.474/.879

w/ Runners On: .305/.426/.505/.931

w/ RISP: .303/.444/.500/.944

w/ Bases Loaded: .294/.333/.824/1.157

Close and Late: .298/.422/.571/.993

Abreu for his career: .303/.411/.512/.923

w/ Runners On: .327/.443/.540/.983

w/ RISP: .321/.454/.549/1.003

w/ Bases Loaded: .330/.403/.585/.988

Close and Late not available for his career

Nice work, CPatt.

Nice post, stat geek

As Richard Prior once said

-Who you gonna believe, me or your lieing eyes?

I think I'll take Abreu numbers "when the game is on the line".

Wow! If that's hitting poorly when the game is on the line, I'll take hitting poorly for 9 million any day.

I still don't think we have the players to acquire him, but I'd love to have him if he really is available.

If the Cubs had a better minor league system, perhaps they'd have a real good shot w/ Abreu, but I think they'll have to target players who are a tier below Abreu.

That is nice work. The stats show that he's one heck of a ball player.

A) How many of those situations were situations when the game was on the line? ie game tied or close, and not when his team wasn't already up by 3 or 4 runs?

B) How much of his OBP is driven by his walk total?

C) How many walk-off hits did he have this season?

Abreu is fantastic when there's no pressure on him to produce. He can hit like there is no tommorrow. Put in a situation when the game is on the line, he's a different ball player.

I'm not questioning the fact that he's not a good ball player, he is. To me though, Abreu is a clean up hitter who thinks he's a lead off hitter. I just don't think he's worth trading a Zambrano or Prior to get him.

CP20,

We can't totally ignore what Ted is saying, though.

I choose to ignore it. I watch plenty of Philly baseball, and know plenty of Philly fans. I'm well aware of their feelings toward Bobby.

Yes, he had a bad 2nd half. Really, he went cold right after the all star break, got real hot again, then went cold at the end. It happens. The guy has been a remarkably consistent productive hitter for 8 years. He's only 32 next season. I'd be ecstatic to see him in a Cubs uniform the next few years.

B) How much of his OBP is driven by his walk total?

What is the point of that question? He's a career .300 hitter with an OBP over .400. The elite hitters all do that.

C) How many walk-off hits did he have this season?

What does that matter? Are we comparing him to Alex Gonzalez now?

Your words sound exactly like the things I hear from Yankees fans talking about how clutch Jeter is, except in the other direction. ie. "I remember a couple times he didn't come through, therefore he never comes through." I watched a series against the Mets last year in Philly when Abreu beat them repeatedly. But I'm not going to use that to say he always comes through.

Someone mentioned that his fiance got caught on tape making the beast with two backs with some Latin heart-throb down Peurto Rico way right around the ASB.

I think my numbers might go into the crapper too.
