Baker on the need for another top starter:

Trib[/url]"]"What if we waited and then Woody is a month behind [in his rehab from shoulder surgery]? We hope he's on time, but you really, really, really don't know. [April is] a month you can't afford to get behind the Cardinals or Houston or whoever, like we did this year. Part of the reason we got behind was we didn't have Prior and Wood and those guys.

Good thing he didn't ask what if Kerry had the surgery a month sooner. You wouldn't want to have a better idea of what your needs are, after all.

And Baker on Rothschild:

"They respect him and they trust him," he said. "That means a lot when you're a person of authority. Plus he works hard and is always trying hard to figure out how to make things better. He takes things personally when things aren't going well. He doesn't pass the buck or the blame to anybody else, like some guys."

Wonder who he's talking about...

And shouldn't you try to find coaches who don't have to take the blame in the first place?

Dear Dusty,

You played a major part in the decision to keep Wood pitching long after all common sense Cub fans realized this season was over and this ridiculous experiment with Wood in the bullpen wasn't helping anything. Stop asking stupid questions, but you are the answer to them. Thank you.

Is Dusty now working on his Commandant Lassard impersonation? He's already got the blind incompetence part down, I suppose mimicing his speech patterns is next.

Don't forget, folks. It was Jim Hendry who said it didn't matter when Wood had his surgery, that he'd be ready for ST regardless.

Could be the single dumbest thing I ever saw written that was attributable to Hendry.

Check out the Murton/Cedeno quote I posted. He seems to think they were Sept. callups.
